1. No doubt about it
Michael Steiner   (02.19.06)
Khamas is an enemy which doesn't even fight over a disputed piece of land but aims for a total destruction of its adversary. Israel is under absolutely no moral or legal obligation to have anything to do with the entity or people Khamas represents. Unilateralism is the only way forward. Qadimah!
2. will KEEP fighting it with full force?
Ben Temalion ,   Shiloh, USA USA USA   (02.19.06)
As if? Olmert will continue to fight jews in their homes and on their land, but will only fire into empty fiields of IL occupied by thoe who are remant of a peninsula that comes to kill them and will be as pins in your eyes until you expell them. Olmert is the head of an illegal gov't. He coninues the coup of the unbound heart of arel sceinerman.
3. and we thought that Olmert is different !!!
raed ,   palestine   (02.19.06)

4. Israel, Don't Back Off Now
Joe Levi ,   Los Angeles.USA   (02.19.06)
I am an ardent Zionist and am an American Jew. I am proud of Israel and my Jewishness. Had there been an Israel prior to WW2, there today would be millions more of us. That said, Israel still is reacting. Whether Arafat or Abbas or Hamas leaders, they have you on the run, with no let up. Iran and the Saudis will supplement any Hamas financial losses. Money will flow from Muslim supporters. The Arabs have as their goal, the destruction of Israel. Muslims want Israel, "Wiped off the map". This is no idle threat. Many US intelligence analysts believe it's only a matter of time before Iran strikes (Iran now threatens daily). Israels policies should have 3 nos: no PA state unless...: no movement between Gaza and West Bank: no division of Jerusalem, and walk the walk. It should bring in capital punishment, and stop freeing Arab prisoners as part of some "deal". Israel must be ruthless..and have a -0- tolerance for violence. There must be harsh retaliation for Muslim-Arab attacks on Israelis, both Jew and Arab alike. Israel's timid leadership and Oslo 1, have led to this spiraling of violence. Gaza must be demilitarized immediately. Beilin should be tried for treason.
5. #3:
Michael Steiner   (02.19.06)
Face it buddy: EVERY Israeli Jew from National Union to Meretz will ALWAYS put the interests of the Israeli people first. We may fight among each other; oftentimes to the point of hatred, but we are ultimately one people who'll inseparably stick together against external enemies. You're not negotiating with mar Olmert--you're negotiating with all Israeli people. As I wrote, unless you recognize Israel in its international borders (starting with those whom you just elected to represent you), there will be no negotiations. Am Yisrael chai and always will.

Palestinian. second Hamas will lead you into HELL but don't believe you'll meet any virgins.... Lucifer will embrace you with his hell fire Palestine has never existed . . . as an autonomous entity. There is no language known as Palestinian. There is no distinct Palestinian culture. There has never been a land known as Palestine governed by Palestinians. Palestinians are Arabs, indistinguishable from Jordanians (another recent invention), Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis, etc. Keep in mind that the Arabs control 99.9 percent of the Middle East lands. Israel represents one-tenth of one percent of the landmass. But that's too much for the Arabs. They want it all. And that is ultimately what the fighting in Israel is about today . . . No matter how many land concessions the Israelis make, it will never be enough. It has never been the name of a nation or state. It is a geographical term, used to designate the region at those times in history when there is no nation or state there. The word itself derives from "Peleshet", a name that appears frequently in the Bible and has come into English as "Philistine". The Philistines were mediterranean people originating from Asia Minor and Greek localities. They did not speak Arabic. They had no connection, ethnic, linguistic or historical with Arabia or Arabs. The name "Falastin" that Arabs today use for "Palestine" is not an Arabic name. It is the Arab pronunciation of the Greco-Roman "Palastina"; which is derived from the Peleshet, (root Pelesh) which was a general term meaning "dividers", "penetrators" or "invaders". The use of the term "Palestinian" for an Arab ethnic group is a modern political creation which has no basis in fact - and had never had any international or academic credibility before 1967.
9. isreal will loose
truth   (02.19.06)
is hamas the real reason? or it is just an excuse? if isreal cuts something ... hamas will connect it somewhere else ... cut the 7$/L fuel and they will get it for 0.5 from egypt.... close erez and the will move freely from rafiah... stop funding the government and iran and others will do it better .. they will keep growing and isreal will loose ... they were elected and they are loved ... they are on the right side so they will win at the end
10. Mudwater (#6)
Michael Steiner   (02.19.06)
Khamas is spelled with a khet (חמס), which is transliterated as kh or ch, and Qadimah with a qof (קדימה), which is usually transliterared as q. Stop being a smartass because you're missing the smart bit.
11. this just in, hopefully Ynet will too
Yisraeli   (02.19.06)
(IsraelNN.com) Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is linked to an allegedly illegal transaction tied to Jerusalem’s Betar soccer team. According to a report released by prominent investigative journalist Yoav Yitzchak, in March 2000 Olmert was a "fictitious arbitrator" in a deal that yielded one side over NIS 5 million. Yitzchak states there are government authorities and other journalists who learned of the illegal activities, but they opt to remain silent rather than reveal the details of the case. Yitzchak adds this is not a lone case, stating that, of late, journalists have been “pressured” to refrain from publishing other damaging reports involving Olmert, only a number of weeks before the national election. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=98782
12. fighting with full force ?
Marcel ,   Florida   (02.19.06)
What a Joke ! If israel under Olmert is fighting the enemy with full force than it's no wonder hamas gets stronger and bolder and deadlier. Israel used to know how to fight and defeat her enemies in a matter of days. Now six years ofter the start of the Palestinian intafada Israel talk's and does very little to crush the terrorists
13. Abdul Steiner The only not so smart SMART-ASS is you

aa ,   london   (02.19.06)
steiner , i have a question for you , with all the power and high tech machinery and the attomic bomb that israel owns , do you think they can be threatend by anyone in the world ? let alone the palestinians ? who have nothing except for this stuiped qasam that has mabee hurt one or two people ever since they started launching them , my point is and this is what every peace loving jew should know is that all the palestinians want is for there own land and that is the west bank , gaza ,and east jerusalem , where 200.000 palestinians live and are treated very unequely by there israeli occupiers , and also who are not allowed to apply for the israeli citizenship , and if they do apply , they will be refused , so why does israel wanna keep them if they wanna treat them like shit ? qadima is full of shit , they do not know what they are doing , just like there leader who built 90% of the settelments in gaza and the west bank , and in the end he demolished them , and so this is another big mistake he and his folowers are making now . they need to leave the palestinians alone with total seperation , and to let them live there life without medeling in every little thing they do . iam sure you are looking for peace just like many israelis and palestinians , but we just have to find the rite leaders and believe me , it is not kadima nor likud nor labor and if you ask me i would not have an answer for you because i do not see anyone at this moment who is serious about real peace .....
21. What? No Peace Deal? Who knew?
Yoel Ariel ,   Moving around   (02.19.06)
Can I play,....? Dopey Olmert is going to try to select the PA parts he likes and the Hamas parts he does not. Sort of like picking fly crap out of pepper. He has not shown he is bright enough to engender "unilateralism"(whatever that is as applies to Israel/Pals)to any situation. OK. Serious switch on now. 1-The reason for any government to exist is to provide certain protections to the citizens/residents of that nation. a-Rockets falling EVERYDAY, and various successful (nationalist)attacks, wether by fist, knife or other means, means that the government has not done it's job. 2-Olmert as Likud or soon as Kadima has no plan to provide that protection except to withdraw from territory that may be used for maneuver of the military echelon. Not critical but not smart either. Such withdrawals get you nothing, and provide the enemy with propaganda and moral strength, as well as the more important staging areas for future attacks. Also provides a reqard for negative behavior. Not smart or effective. 3-A plan. Everyone who wants to lead a nation needs a plan. Saying you have one is not having one. Useless words like "unilateralism" means nothing. It means that only one side is going to do something. it does not mean that the one side is going to something smart. I now wait for someone to explain to me why giving the Pal ANYTHING for NOTHING is smart. Also someone please tell me how one fights the bad guys when they are not military formations, i.e., uniforms, sites, bases etc., etc. Saying is much easier than doing. Abdul, er, Michael???
22. Is Hamas doing G-d's work?
Micha ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (02.19.06)
Perhaps we Jews don't deserve to keep the Land of Israel. G-d allowed us to win back the whole Land from the River to the Sea. But we are only allowed to live in this Land if we abide by certain conditions. The Torah tells us that we must live by G-d's commandments otherwise the Land will spew us out. Perhaps Hamas will succeed and we will be spewed out. We are becoming very secular. We have gay parades in Jerusalem. There are shops that sell pork. People despise the Torah. There is widespread desecration of Shabbat. There is a slave trade of women for sexual purposes. There is corruption in the government and the courts. The police have uprooted Jews from their homes by brutal means. Injustice has also been practiced against Arab residents. The poor of the Land are exploited. We are anything but a "light unto the nations." We don’t have a divine right to the Land of Israel. Our right to live here is contingent upon living by the Torah which G-d gave us through the hand of Moses his Prophet.
23. Steiner, which borders are you talking about?
Khalid ,   Halifax   (02.19.06)
"As I wrote, unless you recognize Israel in its international borders (starting with those whom you just elected to represent you), there will be no negotiations." Fair statement. But which borders are you referring to? Israel itself still hasn't decided on its final borders so how can they ask someone to recognize them? Ok, Hamas wants to liberate pre-'48 Palestine and I admit this is rediculous. This should not be their goal and I believe they are going to change this clause soon; once they can sacrifice their ego for the good of the people, and again, I believe they will. But what borders are you talking about? Do they include the West Bank and Gaza's Airspace and Sea space? If so, how can you expect ANY Palestinian, let alone Hamas, accept this? Or do they mean mean drawing back to the '67 lines but keeping East Jerusalem? Or giving up East Jerusalem? So I say until Israel itself recognizes its OWN borders (so that the people they're asking to recognize them, know what their recognizing) it should not be surprised when Hamas refuses to do so. Hamas should disarm and adhere to prior deals, only because that is the will of the people. They were voted in on a platform of civil justice and an end to corruption, and if you followed their campaign, not once did they mention armed struggle or suicide bombs or qassams because they knew that if they did, they wouldn't have been elected. Oh and just a side note: maybe in Hebrew it's pronounced Khamas but it shouldn't be; it's an Arabic word that is transliterated Hamas and you're typing in English where it is Hamas, save Khamas and Aza and Levanon for your Hebrew conversations.

25. Let the Army take over totally
akiva rogers ,   chicago, il, usa   (02.19.06)
When my family and I make aliyah this year, I want to see the Army making more than recommendations. I want to see them running things. They are the only part of Israel that works. Let's have them build and defend Israel rather than destroy it.
26. Kadima Achorah
Marcel ,   Florida   (02.19.06)
Israel waits for what ? Maybe when the Russian military weapons arive in Gaza ,then Israel will decide to talk some more and send more shekle's to the Palestinian's so they can buy more ? http://www.ehud-olmert.com/
27. Raed from Fakestine.
Uzziel   (02.19.06)
With Olmert is no different than with any other Israeli leader to this date because by the way of terrorist campaigns, you haven´t been able to "elect" an Israeli politician weak enough to give up to your criminal blackmail. We can not respect any entity who carries out terrorist activity in order to reach their goals. Neither we can´t respect an entity whose goal is to destroy the State which whom you are "negotiating" and never keep their promises nor they honor whatever they sign. Be careful not to go to the hell yourselves...

30. #s 20 + 23 + 28:
Michael Steiner ,   EU   (02.19.06)
#20: I agree that we need to leave the Palestinians alone. That is why I constantly repeat that we need to build the anti-terror barrier, withdraw behind it and let the Palestinians live as they please on the other side. #23: Khalid, you do have a point. But Israel DOES have international borders, which are the borders from the time of its recognition, i.e. the Green Line. THOSE are the borders Khamas should recognize. They can be then modified as required, per e.g. the Geneva initiative. And if it's all the same to you, I'll spell Hebrew and Arabic words the way I please, thank you very much. #28: Adolfelle, of 29 comments hitherto, yours account for over one fifth of them. And in your six talkbacks all you've done is attack other people. Of the six comments, FOUR are addressed to me. Don't you think you may have a slight problem with your mental health? I don't know what your obsession with me is all about, but lay off me. I'm not interested in you in the slightest. Find a man or, failing that, a battery-operated luuuuuurve machine. ;-)
