You get drafted when you're 18 and you end your service (usually) at 21-22. Before and after that you're a civilian.

How they hide behind kids? By travel with them in the same car, by living in houses with lots of kids, by walking with kids. Many times Israel did not strike because they knew there are kids, but not always you are lucky. And second I do not think if Jews would sit with kids it would makes a differents for the other side, they like to kill all Jews, never mind if they are men, children and women
