I think this issue of the life-span of the Hebrew language got a little out of proportion. In my previous post #36, my original point was much more simple than digging into the deep ancestry of Semitic languages. It doesn't matter if modern Hebrew is different from biblical Hebrew, or that it wasn't spoken at certain points in time. The fact is that it survived as the liturgical language of the Jewish people for 3 millenia, and it is still called Hebrew today. It's the language of a nation with 3000 year old roots in Israel--same people, same language, same religion. I hear many times people saying that the Palestinians have more of a right to claim Israel as their homeland than Jews. This is why I think they're wrong.

Hebrew didn't originate from Aramaic, as you claim, no was it a dead language but was a language of Jewish studies of religion and law, but also of poetry. Yiddish on the other hand developed from old High German, which the Jews acquired when living in Germany and brought with them to the Eastern Europe. Not all European Jews spoke Yiddish -- "Spanish” Jews speak Ladino, which had derived from XV century Spanish and is spoken even now by Jews in Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria and Israel. As to the number of Arabic sounding words in Hebrew, all languages borrow from each other -- when you say bouquet (of flowers) that’s from French. Veranda is an Indian word, and so on. . the Jews living in Arab countries didn't speak Yiddish but a dialect derived from a mixture of Hebrew and Arabic. I am certain that quite a few of the "Arab" words were borrowed from Hebrew and not the other way around. "The real language" of Jews is Hebrew, but also Yiddish and Ladino, which each have a literature written in it. Yiddish became a literary language rather mach later for the Jews and it uses Hebrew, not Latin alphabet. Hebrew and "ivrit" means one and same in two different languages. I am not a linguistic expert, but that's a common knowledge and common sense.

Jordan ,   Washington, DC   (03.11.06)
ok... here we go: Until 1950 there was The Palestine Post, The Palestine Electric Company, the Palestine Foundation Fund, Palestine Economic Corporation, etc etc ... What do they have in common? THEY WERE ALL JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS!!! It wasn't until Arafat (who was born in EGYPT, by the way) and the plo appropriated the term, the title of Palestinian applied almost exclusively to the Jews. Here's a quote to leave you with... "The interesting thing about "Palestinians" is that so few of the West Bank Arabs thought of themselves as such before 1967. It post-dates the founding of the PLO: Palestine had a national liberation movement before it had a nationality." - Mark Steyn, National Post, April 4, 2002.

102. To Yafawi
Chaya ,   Eretz Yisrael   (03.12.06)
You asked how we could give up Sinai. Well, from what I know Sinai is not part of Eretz Yisrael. But the other reason we gave it up was for a real peace. You see, peace is a very important thing for us. And as much as we love Eretz Yisrael, there are people - even rabbis - who are willing to give up parts of our Land for peace. ONLY for peace. But I have read that there are great numbers of your people who are willing to leave if they are given money to do so.

Absolutely. The Palestinians deserve the government of their choice. In my opinion, they voted for what they really believe in. I hope they are happy. Of course, they won't be happy for long. Because there is a price for one's choices. They chose terrorists, as usual, and will be dealt with accordingly.
