93 Talkbacks for this article
1. I learned about these people in '73
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (04.10.06)
If I had any delusions about Evangelical Christians (and I didn't) they were wiped away in '73 when an Evangelical girl came up to me in the dining hall at college, and told me that by fighting back in the Yom Kippur War, and not letting the Arab Armies overwhelm the country, the Second Coming was spoiled. You see, had Israel not resisted and fought back, the Second Coming would have happened, Israel would be saved, as would the whole world by Jesus. By the way, as a child, I always rooted for the Saracens in movies about the Crusades.
2. I hardly know where to start.
Bill Pearlman ,   Chicago, USA   (04.10.06)
First "Commander and Chief" is sinking faster than a submarine in the ratings. Second, people vote for the top of the ticket and there was no way Mondale would have beaten Reagan unless George Washington was his running mate. Third, evangelicals support Israel because they take the bible literally, not because of some end of the world vision. Fourth, what Israelis don't know about American politics could fill several large volumes. And last but certainly not least, Americans arena't idiots despite what elite intellectuals like to think. They know perfectly well who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.
3. Talk about shifting the spotlight!!!
John ,   Jerusalem   (04.10.06)
4. Now I get it.
Ernie Moore   (04.10.06)
One goofy evangelical girl give complete understanding of them all. That comment shouldn't represent Israeli thinking. Two or more idiotic and not funny comments by a sad comic doesn't explain anything. Three: not everybody love RAYmond.
5. You are half right...
josef cohen ,   bkk thailand   (04.10.06)
You are half right Ray but only about the influence of TV. Americans don't hate Arabs because they see them as a force against Christianity. Prior to the Gulf war most Americans didn't have much thought about Arabs one way or another. And as evidence I would point out that they have settled into America quite easily frequently avoiding the usual route of urban migration and going straight into rural and suburban areas with no real obstacle. It is precisely because of TV tho, in the last 50 years the usual image is an Arab(s) on the news blowing up an aeroplane, a market, a school, a hospital or a place of worship. Now we have 9/11, suicide bombing to gain entry to heaven and the mayhem every night of Iraq. (And for those who watch a little more closely the whole Darfur crisis which the US government labelled a genocide, which all the Arab states do their best to stave off any sanctions against the Arab government of Darfur. They are so indifferent to the issue they just held an Arab League confab there.) So Americans like many people are scared when they see people who have no apparent red lines and are prepared to get there way no matter how much destruction and havoc they sow, The recent cartoon row has only served to further confirm people's worst fears. And this is the news not some Hollywood conspiracy of negative profiling. For consideration, Josef Cohen
6. PS
josef cohen ,   bkk thailand   (04.10.06)
The Americans may well elect a Women in the near future but it will most likely be a republican, Just like if Colin Powell runs as Republican he will have a good chance and the fact that he is an African American won't be so off putting to those who might otherwise be adverse to it. Hillary Clinton is far to divisive, so if the democrats pursue her as their candidate they will just be continuing their losing streak. Josef
7. At last!!
Michael Steiner ,   EU   (04.10.06)
Thank you, Ray, a great article, which is necessary for many Israelis and especially Jews in the galut to bestir themselves. I've been saying for a long time that the only reason the Xians "like" us is that they hate Muslims more than they hate Jews. If anyne has illusions to the contrary, I guess you'll learn the hard way. We can use their support but always keep them at an arm's length (which CERTAINLY involves NOT letting them build Jesus Disney parks in Israel). Dorothy (#1): no wonder we root for the Saracens, just as it was no wonder that the Jews in Spain sided with the Moors when the latter invaded the Iberian peninsula. Xians have never been our friends and we have traditionally always had better relations with Muslims and Arabs than with Xians or Europeans--except, that is, in the past half century or so.
8. Evangelicals....
Elliott ,   Tel Aviv   (04.10.06)
Who cares if Evangelicals believe Jews will perish in hell? Last time I checked, just because someone believed something didn't make it true. Also, last time I checked, I MYSELF didn't believe that I'm going to burn in hell, so what the hell do I care if someone else thinks I will? What matters is that they support Israel, support our right to live in peace and security, and support our right to defend ourselves. I have some dear friends in my life whom I disagree with vehemently on subjects as unimportant as which sports teams to root for, and as very important as whether I'm going to heaven if I don't accept Jesus as my savior. Newsflash: they are still my dear friends even though I believe them to be entirely wrong on several things. Why? Because when it comes to matters that are NOT faith-related, we agree on almost all of them. Morals. Values. Family. Life. Friends. You know...the IMPORTANT things. Jews need to get over this obsession with not trusting and/or hating Evangelicals based on our respective faith beliefs (which won't every be proven true or false anyway), and start embracing the fact that they are on OUR side.

10. So Ray believes that the United States is Israels
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (04.10.06)
Enemy now? The big bad Vietnam culture? The religious right riding on the backs of Jews to Heaven? I think Ray really runs the line of, keep my friends close, but my enimies closer. His cultures Mosque sits on the Temple Mount. Although he professes to be Christian, his brothers in arms attack Jews, Americans, and Europeans with suicide bombers. They even profess the intent to bring in a Nuclear weapon to Israel and the United States. Maybe we ought to get all the Arab programs translated, that tell their children about the wonders of suicide bombings! I don't see that on Television Ray. And I'm an atheist. If you want to play the Religious race card with Evangelicals against Jews, then try it with your Muslim buddies against Jews. Like your Muslim buddies aren't threatening to drive the Jews into the Meditteranean every other day of the week. The programs you tout are really lousy anyways. A woman president would beat out a man though. They have aborted 45 million babies in the last 33 years. With some PMS, they might conquer the world. Ray's job is to divide and conquer. When Ray's buddies invite people in with open arms to Mecca, and the suicide bombings stop, I might change my mind about the Muslim population overseas. Until then, he needs to move over to his country that he touts so boisterously, and write to them about cleaning up their own backyard. The problem is in front of your face Ray---Your countrymen are a bunch of terrorists. They condone terrorism, teach their children that terrorism and matyrdom are acceptable. I'm glad that you are feeding at the American money pit. The money must be good. They obviously couldn't pay you enough to go live with the people who you relish in your articles. It's easier to hang out with the ones you despise, and collect a paycheck while complaining about them all the time.

12. The Land of Israel
Lenny ,   NY   (04.10.06)
Hi, I think it is possibly better to have an enemy who openly wishes to harm, than one who pretends to be a good freind. And it is clear that the support for the Jews by xtians is clearly based on a religious ground, and not specifically with concern for Jews. In other words, if a non-Jew backs the right of Jews to live, and to live in their land which was given to them by G-d, then this is excellent and will surely bring blessing unto them from above. However, if the support is not as an individual with values and belief in justice etc., but rather based on the belief's in the xtian ideas, then I believe that such support is possibly worse than those who openly wish to harm Israel. For their sake, I would recommend that they withdraw support. The One Who never sleeps nor slumbers is fully able and willing to watch His children. However, if they do genuinely support, then they would be blessed to be in the position as G-d's agent, so to speak. May we merit True peace and happiness for Israel and the world at large, with the leadership of the Moshiach (Messiah- the real Messiah ( MessiahTruth.org )) immediately.
13. Maria: Fear of being wrong
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (04.10.06)
There are at least 3 advocates of the Ostrich Syndrome: 1. Jews who exclude evidence beyond their own books 2. Christians who exclude evidence beyond their own books, and 3. Muslims who exclude evidence beyond their own books. They are each ignorant and committed not to look outside of their own books out of fear they may be wrong. That's also inherent in the argument "it might lead to apostasy" (assimilation, etc.). Because these religions are contradictory and mutually exclusive, at least two are certainly wrong. However, the Creator must be compatible with His creation. If your books aren't compatible with the real world then, no matter what you call your religion, you're an idolater. Only one of these religions and books can be logically derived from scratch. That's the correct one and excluding external evidence implies that one's religion is against the Creator. Dorothy, I've suffered through many of your comments on the Ynet talkbacks. You're just as deluded as that girl was. To catagorize all of "these people" based on one encounter...
15. Ray, questions for you( yet again )
Ron ,   LA   (04.10.06)
Ray you claim evangelicals support Israel for selfish reasons, using PR, spins, lies and have impure motives. However you base this assumption on totally subjective basis. No even one fact, no even link, nada. As an American Israeli Jew I tell you, you are totally wrong. I base my conclusions not on my personal believe like yourself, but some solid research and knowledge. Check just one link. There are many more. See what those evangelical are about. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1139395642585&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FPrinter http://www.cufi.org/default.aspx Tell us why we should believe you, not them? “True anti-Semitism may have evolved in the “passions” of European Christiandom, but the stepchild of that anti-Semitic hatred is born and bred in the cornfields of the American Bible belt.” Ray, do I understand you? You claim that tens of millions of American Christians are anti-Semitic? This is very serious accusation. Do you have any evidence? Examples? Ray you can say the Earth is flat too. The only thing, you need to provide evidence. Do you have any? By all means, America is the best country for Jews ever in history. Not good enough for you, Ray? You claim “Americans, generally, hate Arabs”. You claim “In judging Americans, Arabs and Israelis are forced to weigh the challenge using the “lesser of two evils” formula”. In other words Jews know that Americans are evil, but “force” to choose them, because this benefits them? Ray, in my vocabulary it smells anti-Semitism. This is how those Jews behave. Calculate. Scam. Dishonest. Treacherous. Of coarse I know your wife is Jewish and so all your best friends… You claim “Stereotyping is an everyday trait in American culture” Looks like you are very good at learning this American culture.. Ray, I know you read and respond to talkbacks. Why don’t you respond to questions, asked in previous article by Ron from LA? Do you have an answer? As a Jew I am not concerned what evangelicals believe. We Jews are very secure in our belief. We are so secure, we even allow our brothers Evangelical Christians to believe whatever they please. This is the real America, Ray. You claim “Americans, generally, hate Arabs” My opinion (I tell you this as an Immigrant to this great country) is the opposite. Americans generally are very tolerant and loving people. American culture is not about hate. This is exactly why Israelis love Americans so much, and this is mutual. Ray, our Judeo- Christian partnership is based on shared values, not profit and loss statements. Too much al-Jeesira, Ray.
16. Interesting, yesterday evening I was thinking
Judith   (04.10.06)
hey haven't heard anything from Ray recently, &. Presto, here you are! As they say in these parts you'll live until 120.
17. Michael please read a history book....
josef cohen ,   bkk thailand   (04.10.06)
Michael please read a history book.... The situation of the Jews in the Arab world historically was far less secure than you and many like you have been led to believe because you view Jewish History thru a Eurocentric prism that ignores the wider experience. Find out where the first large scale genocides against Jews happened...Morrocco and Egypt, Find out why the Rambam had to flee the idillyc Iberian penisula. There are so many things that could be addressed, but the bottom line is that the Jewish Communities there only began to prosper under the Colonial and Ottoman influences. And as these influences retreated the Jewish communities quickly followed. josef

19. Comedian?

If this was a sample of his stand up work, then i suggest he goes back and work on his material. Why does Ynet post these crappy defeatest nonsense articles anyway?

Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (04.10.06)
We are all on this earth to suffer, dontcha know that? I only gave you one face to face example. Less dramatic meetings, history and culture provides me with the rest of what I need to know about evangelicals and fundamentalist Christians and their "love" of the Jewish people.
21. Stop thinking out loud Ray

"I'm glad that you are feeding at the American money pit. The money must be good. They obviously couldn't pay you enough to go live with the people who you relish in your articles. It's easier to hang out with the ones you despise, and collect a paycheck while "complaining about them all the time. " I see Steven you are real American. You glad this guy makes a buck in your land. I am not so much sure you could get the same deal in Palestinian land. Sharp knife on your neck, may be.. Suleiman Rushdie already knows. Those Europeans know better not to draw cartoons. They know how to teach. By example. This pattern of thinking is typical of Palestinians. You see, Steven victimhood is a serious business. One has to keep his victimhood tight. Victimhood is very valuable product. Othervice you have to take responsibility for your existence. You need to work, earn a living, compromise. You see, it's easy to be a victim. Blow up the Karmi passage and than you complain why Israelis don't let you in. Shell Sderot with Kassams, than complain Israel responds with bombing. You see, Steven, they elected their government democratically, so they have a right to terrorize. Why not? They are freedom fighters! Why Europe doesn't send money? Outrageous! They better send some money; otherwise they will hijack planes and blow buses. They have the right. It is written in their book. Their prophet told them. They can kill and trash, because a cartoon. They want to return all refugees to Israel. So why they can not teach them hate of the Jews? Their book tells them Jews are sons of pigs and monkeys. They are NOT responsible. It’s their book. You now, the religion of love, tolerance and universal peace. Even Bush red the Quaran and after many sleepless nights came to this conclusion. You see, they are HU-MI-LI-A-TED. Their culture is sensitive.. They are insulted. Poor babies. Grow up, Palestinians. If you want to have a state, take responsibility.
23. #8 is right and so is #22
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (04.10.06)
I recently saw a program on Ch. 8 about a temple in northern India which lets rats run through the temple because they believe them to be descended from a goddess. Well, believing doesn't make it so! And concerning the Hamastinians, they only have themselves to blame for their situation.
24. Start your day with same old Ray (end)
Muhammed Rabinovitch ,   Mecca/Tel Aviv   (04.10.06)
25. "american hatred" is nothing like islamic hatred
mike ,   usa   (04.10.06)
i've seen americans that hate muslims and it is not even 1% of what muslims who hate americans are like. i haven't met ANY americans who would like to rip the heart out of his enemy with his bare hands (and i've seen muslims who, by the way they spoke, i believe would actually do it). again, the moral equivalence doesn't apply here. muslims posess and exhibit a unique brand of barbarity and trying to pull everyone down to that level just rings hollow.
26. More American TV traits
Ray Hanania ,   Chicago, IL USA   (04.10.06)
And we can also add Katie Couric's move from "tough fluff" morning TV from the Today Show to "tough News" on the CBS evening news, once the mainstay of the American psyche. The transition is also TV preparing Americans for the inevitable better than most other forms of social influence can. And to the writer who says the Evangelists have no ulterior motives for Israelis and Jews: come on. They are very clear. If you do not embrace Jesus, you WILL (not might) perish and not see the after light. Of course, maybe that's the kind of humor you prefer? Thanks, as usual for all the feedback. I LOVE IT! Ray Hanania www.hanania.com
27. Christians believe the Hebew prophets.
DR ,   Gwent, UK   (04.10.06)
This article's approach to evangelicals is dangerously selective and liable to provide a distinctly false impression about Christian support for Israel. Almighty God choose to identify Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob & their descendants....the Jews. This is declared in the Hebrew-Christian Scriptures and is why many Christians identify with and love the People and Land of Israel. It is this literal interpretation of the Scriptures, including the words of the Hebrew prophets, which lies at the foundation of the feelings of evangelicals towards Israel. Those within the professing Church who do not hold to such an interpretation can often be found teaching the false doctrine of replacement theology and mixing among the supporters of those who would pursue the eradication of the Jewish state. Christian support for Israel has nothing to do with hell or the second coming of Jesus Christ. Such are indeed outlined within the Scripture but God's purpose towards His People and His Land are as unequivocal as His Promises. His Word declares that Christians should comfort His People Israel and in the first book of Moses, Genesis, God himself pulls no punches by declaring that He will bless them that bless you & curse them who curse you. Many Christians are very aware of the significance of the times and the agenda of those who hate Israel. The Hebrew prophets have themselves written of these issues - the fact is that many Christians believe the words of these ancient Jewish writers.
28. a jewish state with no jews in it
Susan ,   Philadelphia, USA   (04.10.06)
Evangelicals want to speed up the second coming by converting all the Jews in Israel to Christianity. They will tell you that you can be Jewish and accept Jesus as your savior, but this is just not true. Jews have no need for a savior other than G-d. Will they blame Jews if Jews don't convert and the second coming does not happen? Ray, the other step-child of early Christian hatred for Jews in now the Arab and Muslim world. It is strange that even extremists who hate the West have bought into Western Christian antisemitsm.
29. So why not explain your ulterior motives Ray?
Steven Wilson   (04.10.06)
Why are you pitting Christians, who are not blowing up Jews, against the Jews in the first place? I'd be more concerned about your Arab Bretheren. Or would that make you a hypocrite? You've learned well from Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton. You play the religious race card well. By the way, why are you trying to drive a wedge between Americans and Jews. What's your motivation Ray?
