1. Of all the dumb ideas...
George W ,   Chicago IL   (04.20.06)
Next up, a screening of the movie "Airplane" at the World Trade Center site. In a respectful way, of course.
2. A theatrical show in a death camp???
Yonatan ,   USA   (04.20.06)
Any kind of entertainment in a death camp is moronic! How disrepectful can you get???
3. #2 Yoni

Not to mention religiously disrespectful..
4. Well one thing's for sure
Jenny ,   NYC   (04.21.06)
the Polish are still idiots.
5. Very disrepectful..
David Joseph ,   Orlando, Florida   (04.21.06)
not because its about Jesus, but because its a rock concert on a death camp.
6. They could host a fly fishing tournament and a World Cup
(04.21.06)
Event there too. Lets host events in grave yards the world over. It would show respect for all the dead.

Alladin ,   Turbanistan   (04.21.06)
the Polish are still idiots ? Jenny, dear smart ass, maybe you should first educate yourselves who were the victims of that camp. Most of the victims were Polish goys and Association of former prisoners of that camp gave their permission for that "rock opera". American Jews, especially those born many years after the war should halt die klappe cose that's not their business.
8. The world forgets
Jim Salduffi ,   Philadelphia   (04.21.06)
Jesus of Nazareth was a Hebrew. All of his family were Hebrew. Why do Hebrew people and Non Hebrew people forget to add that fact to every discussion about this man. He was Hebrew. They were ALL Hebrew. There are villians and heroes in every culture. But most of all we forget that Jesus himself was Hebrew. Maybe the Modern world is so busy labeling people and putting everyone into convenient boxes they forget... He was also a human being. Just like every one reading this. Get over history and get on to today.
9. A response to Alladin
Kate ,   London   (04.21.06)
" American Jews, especially those born many years after the war should halt die klappe cose that's not their business." The murder of over 3 million Polish Jews with the total collaboration of the vast majority of non-Jewish Poles is very much the business of Jews everwhere. Gentile Poles may have been the victims of Nazis but they were also collaborators in the genocide of European Jewry. Poles didn't just assist the Germans but also perpetrated their own massacres as in Jedwabne when over 1600 Jews were burned alive in a barn. Nothing better sums up Polish hatred than a popular saying at that time in Poland: "When Hitler dies we will go to his grave to spit on it. We will then return to bring him flowers for helping us get rid of the Jews." Even after the Nazis had left Poles were still carrying out pogroms against Jews, as in Kielce when over 40 Jewish Holocaust survivors were murdered by Polish gentiles. And today even in the almost total absence of Jews anti-Semitism is still rampant in Poland. Given her history it is Poland which should have no rights in such matters and not the Jewish people. And you are totally wrong about Majdanek. Up to 500,000 people passed through Majdanek, of whom 200,000 perished. Approximately 125,000 of these were Jews. Virtually all of those murdered in the gas chambers there were Jews.
10. Who died there?
Mike K ,   Tawas, USA   (04.21.06)
If 100,000 Jews died in the camp, who were the other 130,000? Hundreds of thousands of Christian (Catholic) Poles also died in the Holocaust - most of them defending their Jewish brothers' right to live. As for the performance, Jesus Christ Superstar is not a "rock concert" but a musical tribute to a man who died standing up for his religious beliefs. Isn't it ironic that, even today, we're still fighting over a site where so many died doing the same thing?
11. DISGUSTING!!!
Michael Steiner   (04.21.06)
Which SICK, IDIOTIC mind came up with this outrageous poposal in the first place?! Not only to stage a musical at the site of a tragedy of unprecedented proportions but to stage a XIAN musical at the site where thousands of JEWS were brutally murdered!!! Xians are no friends of Jews and this mythical "jesus" character has nothing to do with the Jewish nation; with our history, identity, beliefs, suffering, etc.
12. A response to Mike K
Kate ,   London   (04.21.06)
"If 100,000 Jews died in the camp, who were the other 130,000? Hundreds of thousands of Christian (Catholic) Poles also died in the Holocaust - most of them defending their Jewish brothers' right to live." If you read my post above (#9) you'll see that there isn't one part of the above statement that is true. Poland was and still is almost certainly the most anti-Semitic nation on the planet. Further, the idea that hundreds of thousands of Poles died saving Jews is not only utterly wrong, but given the reality of overwhelming Polish collaboration in the Holocaust also extremely offensive. "As for the performance, Jesus Christ Superstar is not a "rock concert" but a musical tribute to a man who died standing up for his religious beliefs." It was the hatred spread by Christianity against Jews over many centuries that allowed the Holocaust to occur in the first place. To stage this musical in that place is to insult the memory of the 125,000 Jewish victims.
13. Further Response to Alladin #7
Martin K. ,   Washington   (04.22.06)
Alladin - I have to assume that you used the expression "Halt die Klappe" (shut the mouth) intentionally to signal your solidarity with the vicious SS guard of Majdanek who was infamous for using that very expression, Elisabeth Knoblich. (See Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majdanek) Since you've identified yourself as a fan of the vicious mass-murdering SS, I think there's nothing further to say. By the way, where is "Turbanistan?"
14. Response to Kate
Mike K ,   Tawas, USA   (04.22.06)
After reading Kate's response to my first comment, I did some further research and must now retract my initial statement. It was not hundreds of thousands of Polish Christians who died - It was THREE MILLION! the same number of Polish Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis. In fact the first two years of its operation, Auschwitz was EXCLUSIVELY for non-Jewish Poles. And many of them never even made it to the camps - they were executed in the town square in front of, and often with, their family members. From http://www.holocaustforgotten.com/Lucaire.htm: "The Yad Vashem museum in Israel honors "the Righteous Among the Nations" and Poland ranks FIRST among 40 nations with 5,503 men and women, almost one-third of the total, honored for their "compassion, courage and morality" and who "risked their lives to save the lives of Jews." While people are rightfully fighting to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust, it is sad that some are willing to forget, or even deny, HALF of its horror!!!
15. Polish anti-Semitism
Daniel van Dalen ,   Jerusalem   (04.23.06)
There is anti-Semitism in Poland. But there are also good people. I visited Oswiecim / Ushpitzin / Auschwitz twice for multiple days, and I met some very, very friendly people and was also called "f*cking dirty Jew" by a small Polish child, next to Auschwitz-I. The fact that a child called me that right there in that place wasn't quite pleasant, politely said. But all of the adults I spoke to, ranging from tourist guides to taxi drivers to shopowners to people on the street whom I asked for directions, were very polite and helpful. But the child is one thing I won't forget.
16. # 9 Hatred mantra
Konrad ,   Warsaw   (04.23.06)
"Nothing better sums up Polish hatred than a popular saying at that time in Poland: "When Hitler dies we will go to his grave to spit on it. We will then return to bring him flowers for helping us get rid of the Jews."" Repeating your mantras over and over again doesn't make them any truer. This is the second time in one week that you quote that allegedly popular Polish saying. I am over sixty, a philologist/university teacher by profession, and I have never heard nor read this saying. And, by the way, the phrase "to spit on someone's grave" sounds very un-Polish. To state that the Poles were grateful to Hitler for ASSISTING them in THEIR own project of Endlösung is tantamount to gross perversion of historical truth. Delicately speaking. Hatred is on your side. And, as always, it is based on ignorance.
17. Response to Michael Steiner
Mac ,   USA   (04.23.06)
"Xians are no friends of Jews and this mythical "jesus" character has nothing to do with the Jewish nation; with our history, identity, beliefs, suffering, etc." Dear Mike, if this is how you treat religious beliefs shared by hundreds of millions of people on this planet, then surely you can't be surprised by disprespect given you by others. Whether you like it or not, Jesus is a central figure of all Christian religions - if you ignore that fact, then you will hear similar remarks about the mythical 'moses', 'isaac' 'abraham' (lowercase purposeful to mirror your statement) and the whole mythical concept of a mythical history of a mythical 'chosen nation' allegedly given mythical 'promised land' by a mythical demi-god. I certainly do hope you are a black sheep among the Jewish people
18. Mike K, you are very wrong.
AK   (04.23.06)
Yes, 3million Christian Poles had died in WWII, that’s about 10% of Polish Christians, and 3million Polish Jews were murdered , that about 87% of Polish Jewish population. 10% vs. 87% -- see the errors of your thinking? You cannot compare the almost total destruction of Jewish community and culture in Poland to the Christian losses in Poland. The scale of the destruction is simply not comparable, just think about the US and China, each loosing 250 million people in the war -- the same damage?
19. #17
Michael Steiner   (04.23.06)
Spare me the sermon. What I sated is entirely true: "Xians are no friends of Jews and this mythical "jesus" character has nothing to do with the Jewish nation; with our history, identity, beliefs, suffering, etc." It has nothing to do with respect or otherwise. As far as avoteinu are concerned, Avraham, Yitzkhak, Yaakov, Moshe, Aharon, David haMelekh and dozens of others may--for all I care--be mythical. That would be of perfectly no consequence to the Jewish nation nor would it prejudice who and what we are. I don't think I'm chosen by anyone in any way. Nor do I think we have the right to be a free people in a sovereign state of Israel because of any religious book and claims therein. Israel's sovereignty proceeds purely from international law, and that is all that interests me in this respect. So what's your point?
20. Death Camp Concert
Michelle ,   USA   (04.24.06)
I'm not quite sure what their logic was behind wanting to have a concert there, seems creepy to me. I also think about if Jesus had been in Poland at that time, he probably would have been in that camp.
21. To Michael Steiner RE: 19
Mac ,   USA   (04.25.06)
First of all, you get precisely the same kind of respect that you give to others. In this case, NONE. Secondly, though the performance at Majdanek was a silly idea, I don't think it was meant to offend. What's more important is that common sense prevailed. Yet you manage to draw a stupid conclusion not only about the event organizers, or even all of Poles, as some other Einsteins did here, but about the entire Christian culture. And you do it in a stupidly disrespectful way. In doing so, you show how narrow-minded you are. Third, perhaps I would understand your outrage if you had mentioned that Majdanek was a place where thousands of PEOPLE were killed. Jews were by far not the only ones - albeit they constituted the largest group of murdered prisoners of the camp. By underlining just one nationality you just show what a bigot you are. Tell me, would it be OK with you if the concert took place in a camp where only Christians were killed? I guess that's what I wanted to say. But if I were the kind of person you ARE, I'd merely say "Hey, its in Poland, their land, let them do what they want. After all, you people are no friends to anybody else", right?
22. Response to Kate # 9
Chris ,   Warsaw, Poland   (05.07.06)
Jedwabne was horrible tragedy but the actual number of victims was fortunately much lower then 1600 stated by prof. Tomasz Gross in his "Neighbours". Exhumation showed that about 300 people were killed.
