i carry this book in my soul. i read it once and i remember lines from this incredible book that just come unbidden into my mind because they are so heart-rendering. kertesz was just fourteen when he was grabbed off a bus and thrown in auschwitz. it is his story. he is a gentle, warm, loving jewish boy who took all the nazis threw at him and hung on to life. it is the best book i have ever read.
