Interesting how Rabbi Metzger is not involved with this and other issues. How can he not suspend himself until all the accusations have been withdrawn? Who would abide by any "ruling" coming out of his office?

As usual, Ynet is doing a sloppy journalistic job, and are again failing to properly name their article's subject. While it is apparent that Ynet does not pay it's readers sufficient respect to provide them with accurate and reliable information even when they write about non-political matters, it is also clear that for the American readers, a Buffalo is a totally different, albeit similarly ill-tempered beast, than the one the article is about, the Bison bison that used to roam the Great Plains of North America, and is now teethering between extinction and domestication. The critter that was recently re-koshered by the luminaries of the Chief Rabbinate is the common, domesticated and ubiquitous Water Buffalo, the beast of burden that is widespread in Asia and everywhere else rice is grown. Bubalus bubalis is the animal that provides the milk for the Mozarella cheese that is made by the Bitzaron dairy, and it is very remotely related to either Cattle or Bison, with which it cannot interbreed.
8. American Buffalo (Bison) are not Water Buffalo
Yitzi ,   Jerusalem   (05.09.06)
These are two different animals. American Buffalo are plains animals that graze in open ranges and can survive harsh winters. Water buffalo are different in appearance with markedly different horns etc. and only dwell near wet areas and water sources mostly in tropical areas of the world.

Ezra ,   Canada   (05.09.06)
The traditional slaughtering of water buffalo was done by Jews from Israel. Theyr are from the yerushalmi minhag which is sefardi. As a consequence, only the sefardic rabbinate can decide about their kashrut. Before making stupid comments, try to understand the basics of halakha.
12. Moose...
Lior ,   London   (05.09.06)
Ezra, can you give us a Halachic ruling moose up there in Canada? Are they anything to do with bison or buffalo? Do they chew the cud? Any chance of a moose stake?
13. This seems like man made law to me..
Chiloni   (05.10.06)
kashrut strikes me as a man-made construct. People making up what God wants from us, based on what other people a really long time ago said God wants from us. So does the entire concept of a ma'alit shabbat: God thinks its ok to get into an elevator and ride up the 20th floor on Shabbat but it's not ok to get into the elevator next to it and press 20. How can that be what God wants from us? It seems that there are more important things we need to be thinking about and doing down here.

Charles B. Hall ,   Bronx, NY   (05.11.06)
'According to the Halacha (Jewish law), there must also be a "tradition" testifying to the fact that the same animal was consumed in the past by kosher-keeping Jews. ' The above statement is a stringency that is not universally accepted. For many Orthodox halachic authorities -- probably the majority. For them it is sufficient that the animal have the two kosher signs.
20. It's healthier than beef, and it's good!
Bill ,   Los Angeles, USA   (05.13.06)
We're used to American Buffalo, known as Bison, and has a slightly game taste to it, but not as much as yearling lamb. Water Buffalo is even more mild than Bison, so congrats to all Israeli kashrut carnivores for being able to halachically consume what is considered a delicacy here in the States.
