1. better to talk with these guys than to attack them
howard ,   pacific coast, usa   (05.15.06)
These guys don't really know much about the meaning of the Shoah, or the difference between it and other evils. Indeed the Khmer guy may have thought quite clearly about the awful Killing Fields mass-murder campaign of Pol Pot. They seem more ignorant than hostile. Treated with respect -- which would be unusual for a budding rap group when dealing with the older generation -- they might gain additional perspectives on their choice of a name, and you might actually find rap lyrics that oppose anti-Semitism in the future. That would be a Good Thing. I know that some people will simply attack them, but think about this. If simply attacked, they will most likely react by "hardening their hearts", as the saying goes; from ignorant, they could BECOME hostile. And that would be unnecessary and sad. I think it would be reasonable for members of the French Jewish community to reach out to these guys in friendship, assuming that the duo identify at some level with the victims of the Shoah, and show an interest rather than focusing only on sensitivity.
