1. Let us stop being an aid junkie
jason white ,   afula,israel   (05.26.06)
I am sure that there is a long list of ways for us to raise 2.4 billion dollars. We can keep our pride and be masters of our destiny by stopping this aid. Let egypt buy their military equipment from russia and china. When was the last time anyone ever one a war with this equipment?

When are we going to get it right? Statistics from the Census Bureau indicate that more than one in ten people in this country live beneath the poverty level. http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/poverty/poverty04/pov04hi.html There is outright hunger (or the risk thereof) in nearly 12% of US households. http://www.bread.org/learn/hunger-basics/hunger-facts-domestic.html More than 15% of the population has no health insurance: http://www.cbpp.org/8-30-05health.htm Spend some time in American cities, and you will see how badly that money is needed here at home. Look at the state of our health care system, education system, transportation system, etc.. At least in Israel, basic health care is universal. The roads there are often in far better condition than here in the US. While I am not sure, I find it hard to believe that there are literacy problems among Israeli high-school graduates--at least to the extent that it's a problem here in the US. I've heard all the arguments about how the aid is in fact spent in the US, (defense contracts) etc. How it's good for the US economy. These claims are irrelevant. We need to spend our tax money on creating a fairer, more just society here at home.
3. How does Egypt qualify as a Democracy?

4. EGYPT A "DEMOCRACY" BY BUSH'S DEFINITION
Arik Silverman ,   MIlwaukee USA   (05.26.06)
Don't listen to Bush's words about democracy, but look at the practical results: "Democracy" is a code word for "subservient to the American will." Only those in a semi-vegetative state are not aware that the US supports Egypt only as a bribe for it to keep the peace treaty with Israel. After all, that's why the aid started in 1979, to replace aid withdrawn by rich Arab oil countries because Egypt signed the treaty. SILLINESS BEYOND BELIEF: when some of Israel's supporters in the US threaten to cut Egyptian aid because it "isn't delivering enough." Off hand, I don't know the inflation figures, but even without the cuts that have taken place, the real value of the Egyptian aid has shrunk dramatically from what it was in 1979. Almost 27 years of inflation? It is perhaps less than 1/3 as valuable in real goods and services as it was. As its real value diminishes, so does Egypt's incentive to keep the peace treaty with Israel. That's something to think about. Perhaps Israelis should lobby their AIPAC friends to INCREASE aid to Egypt.

Arik, I agree with Jason (#1) that the US should end aid to Egypt, Israel, and (I'll add) Jordan. The US doesn't need Egypt; it can spend the money more profitably in aircraft carriers. But I don't believe for a minute that 1/10 CITIZENS in the US live beneath the poverty level, a distinction (citzens vs. residents) that is not caught in the census. I also point out that 12% "outright hunger (or the risk thereof)" is inconsistent with the 10% figure from the Census Bureau.

From http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/income_wealth/005647.html "The native-born population had increases in both their poverty rate (from 11.8 percent in 2003 to 12.1 percent in 2004) and their number in poverty (from 30.0 million in 2003 to 31.0 million in 2004). Foreign-born naturalized citizens had a 2004 poverty rate of 9.8 percent, compared with 21.6 percent for those who had not become citizens; both rates were unchanged from 2003." As for the 2% difference in figures from the two sources, that could be explained by a variety of factors such as the precise definition of "poverty" and "hunger" as well as differences in the techniques used to gather data, etc.

As far as Israel is concerned,THIS IS NOT AN AID. Israel is the most important alied country in ME ,that helps US MUCH,MUCH more than the opposite. I don't care Israel's receiving money;I think it is not yet enough. What I really care is idiots like omlet humiliating their country when faced with US president ,with a stupid and idiotic face and an idiotic attitude. And what bothers me the most is having the certainty that this money that enters the country goes,in at least a good parcel, to his pocket! olmerd is fighting so fiercely in his own behalf, not Israel's.
12. Israel: Is it moral to accept aid from the US
Ellen Prescott ,   Southsea, Hampshire   (05.26.06)
knowing that there are tens of millions of Americans living in deep poverty, not to mention the victims of hurricane Katrina? You're taking from poor Americans, not something to be proud of.

john ,   london   (05.26.06)
The foreign aid is not going to ruin the US which is, by the way, the least generous of the western countries, in proportion of the aid towards the GNP : US : 0,12 per cent of the GNP! UK : 0,42 per cent; France : 0,65 percent, Norway : 1,03 per cent. Your french friends are five times more generous than you! shame on you!
16. to # 14
jason white ,   afula,israel   (05.26.06)
It was the U.S. that stopped us from destroying the two egyptian armies in 1973. As long as we take aiid they can snatch victory from our hands like in fifty six. The gyps are getting paid not to commit suicide by attacking us again. No aid and we will not stop the next time! To Keren; do not make fun of omelet. He is a world class idiot, but he is our idiot.Pity!

M.K. Steinitz stated: Egyptian military "has been training for war against Israel for the past 10 years."
