1. silencing everyone!
Nabulsi   (05.31.06)
As usual israill is trying with zionist advocates to launch an assult on everyone who dares question its aprtdeid policies agains the Palestinians. Well tough luck because there are still some decent people in the west who can see for themselves the hypocracy and corruption of that is consuming the israilly society. wake up people and stop the occupation and moral corruption.
2. For those who doubt the level of anti-Semitism in the UK
Kate ,   London   (05.31.06)
Those who doubt the level of anti-Semitism in the UK should read the following article by Winston Pickett: Nasty or Nazi? The use of antisemitic topoi in the left-liberal media http://www.engageonline.org.uk/journal/index.php?journal_id=10&article_id=38
3. The UK Media
James ,   UK/Tel Aviv   (05.31.06)
The UK media (BBC, Economist, etc.) generally present a balanced picture. They report on both sides of the fence, with articles covering announcements, violence, motives is not "trumpet[ing] Palestinian propaganda", it is reporting. They do the same for Israel. We can't deny there are anti-semitic groups in the UK, we can take the BNP (British National Party) as an example, (Aerian supremecists, they dislike Muslim, Jew, Hindu alike). But in the UK there is free speech, they can say what they like, but we prosecute where they are inciting violence. However, the issue at hand, should be recognised for what it is. The teaching union is full of liberal, left wing activists. They want to be known about, they want to be heard, they enjoy causing controversy. It was a surprise that they managed to gain consensus, but not that much of one. However, the consensus should not be taken as a feeling of the members they represent. Many of the lecturers, professors, assistants, etc. who they represent do not support all the actions of the union. Anti-semitism? Possibly, but more likely Israel makes a big target for political capital. What to do about the situation? Well I think the biggest issue that is misunderstood in the UK is the security wall. It is seen (portrayed) as being to keep the palestinians out of Israel. It is not seen as a defensive/protective measure. The UK press do not report on the Arabs and Muslims living happily inside Israel, or the demonstrations they are allowed to hold, so the wall does appear to be ethnic separation. Israel needs to make a bigger issue of this.
4. perhaps we should have an ambasador who can speak English...
Avi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.31.06)
And who do we have as Ambassador to the court of St. James? A crooked Russian lawyer whose English is pathetic and has no idea who is who. Do we lack native English speakers or Israelis with an excellent grasp of English and knowledge of the UK, in Israel or even in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? Of course not, but Zvi Hefetz has the right friends, so he got the job even though he is a complete failure and busy with his drug dealing daughter in South America.
5. This has nothing to do with Jews
Ellen Prescott ,   Southsea, Hampshire   (05.31.06)
Ask any one of my several Jewish friends if I'm an anti-Semite. I simply am strongly opposed to Israeli policy towards the Palestinians. I should even like to buy dead sea salts and jaffa oranges, but I can't because that would be supporting the discriminatory system against the Palestinians. I have travelled to Israel several times. And I can say that, to me, this has nothing to do with enmity towards Jews, but with Israeli policy.
6. NATFHE boycotts universities striving to help Israeli Arabs
howard ,   pacific coast, usa   (05.31.06)
A few years ago, Prof. Riad Agbaria of Ben Gurion University approached the university's President Braverman about the shortage of Bedouin Israeli medical students. The university responded by creating the Cultivating Medicine in the Desert program, which has begun to fill that gap. This program is a CONSTRUCTIVE way to improve the situation for Arabs in Israel. It demonstrates how Israeli universities such as BGU are trying to make a difference in the lives of Israel's Arab citizens. So -- do the UK's "pro-Palestinian" leftists step forward and offer support for this program or others like it? Do they offer resources and encouragement for programs that really make a difference in the lives of Arab people in Israel and the region? No. They would rather BOYCOTT Ben Gurion University and Israel's other universities. The fact is that these UK leftists would FAR rather attack Jews than help real, live Israeli Arabs. They would FAR rather attack Israel in the press (and then complain that they are being unfairly criticized by "Jewish-controlled media") than step forward and join Jewish Israelis who are trying to make a REAL difference in the lives of Israeli Arabs. I can only conclude that this is because they are more concerned with making a name for themselves than they are about solving real world problems. Oh -- and by the way: in Israel's supposedly "apartheid" society, the head of Ben Gurion University's Clinical Pharmacology Dept. is an Israeli Arab.
7. #1 = Same old crap
Preston ,   USA   (05.31.06)
I love how the a-rabs spew the same old cliches everytime the Jews write (in their own publication) about the facts of anti-Semitism. They come here to encourage their fellow killers to battle us on all fronts. Even denying the Shoah is considered just another viewpoint, just like denying the grass is green. Oh wait, the a-rabs must smoke it to come up with their inane and vile postings.
8. So those who boycotted South-Africa were anti-white?
Muhammad-Ali ,   Montreal   (05.31.06)
9. The British Academic Union
yakov shani ,   IL.   (05.31.06)
should bring to the attention of the UN the "terrible atrocities" perpetrated by Israeis against the the "peace loving industrious" Palestinians. A motion should be tabled at the UN to force Israel to disband Itself, all Israelis born there should be forced to convert to the local religion, this after all would be the "humane" approach, all Jews who came to Israel from other lands should be forced to go back from whence they came, to the ghettos of Europe, the gulags of Russia and the German Concentration camps which they should be forced to rebuild. Israel would become Palestine, a thriving democratic state epitomizing freedom and free thought and imparting unheard of scientific and medical knowledge to the world. The demise of Israel and the subsequent rise of Palestine would solve all the problems of the world. El Kaida would disband, the Taliban would disintegrate, Iraq would become a paragon of tranquillity with Shia embracing Sunni and Kurd. America would no longer have to keep a fleet of 14 carriers to terrorize the globe and Iran would become a permanent member of the Security Council. Dear British Academics, this is perfect Utopia, how wonderful this would be. There is only one problem that you have overlooked. On the Appian way, between Brindisi and Rome , lies an ancient Roman gravestone inscribed thus, "Me Today, You Tomorrow". This was no doubt intended to portray the lighthearted nature of the deceased, but it is the way of all flesh and it will be the way for Britain and her academics and in fact all the do gooders and human rights activists who appease terrorists and terrorism and give into them. I have always been bewildered by the fact that intellegent academics, supposedly with intellect and powers of deduction not attributed to normal mortals are in fact so blind to human nature and the way life runs its course, the way it has been doing since time immemorial. The demise of Israel would be followed by the demise of Britain and no more will be heard the strains of "Rule Britannia" and "there will always be an England". Why you are unable to grasp this simple fact I shall never know. I feel a great sadness for you and for humanity.
10. If keeping terrorist scum out of Israel is "apartheid"...
Rob ,   UK   (05.31.06)
Then so be it. The only moral corruption in the West is of those who support the terrorist Hamastinians. History will judge these neo-Nazis harshly.
11. it smells like antismeitism
shimon ,   madrid   (05.31.06)
they say: it's against israel, not against the Jews. really? So why don't they boycott palestinian institutions the terror they tolerate and justify? And why haven't they still boycotted Iran for its declared antisemitism? And why they don't boycott Russia for Chechnya? You know what: the pacisifists only move when the USA and Israel do something they disapprove! perhaps it's not anisemitism, but it smells this way
12. Anti-semitism misused again
James ,   UK   (05.31.06)
I do not see this as a witch hunt, and i suggest that you look at your own propoganda machine before attacking the British Press. There are around 2 million Arab isreali's who are treated as worse than second class citizens in Israel. They are restricted from working for major sectors within the Israeli economy, restricted in buying property, restricted in entering university, often restricted from receiving even basic utilities. They are not palestinians they are israeli's who due to their religion are excluded from vast tracts of Israeli life. This is Apartheid and is not acceptable. It is time that the jewish press supported the cause of all isreali's and not simply those who are jewish. Until Israel can come to peace with itself, it will never find peace with the rest of the world. Israel and the jewish people need to put the past behind them, else they risk turning legitimate concerns over their govenrments policies into the foundation for a real re-birth of anti-semitism. Or perhaps if they wont change for their own self interest of future generations, they might change becuase it is the right thing to do.
13. Paranoia
Rustum ,   London, UK   (05.31.06)
Not surprising to see the Zionist media complain that Israel is no longer treated differently from other countries. We boycotted South Africa until the end of the apartheid régime and were not accused of being pathologically anti-white. The issue, dear people, is that the ugly activities of the Israeli army, the nature of the settler state, the festering sore of dispossession are all issues which we can discuss freely in the UK. As for accusation against the BBC and the Guardian, why don't you mention the sickeningly pro-Israel Fox News network as a media outlet which does not broadcast truth but propaganda. The tide is turning against the racist foundations of the Israeli state, and many people are going to scream about it, but there is simply no way that the world can condemn Chinese activiteis in Tibet, Sudanese activities in Darfur and believe that Israeli activities in the occupied territories are all milk and honey. I believe the expression used by Dov Weisman was "we don't want the Palestinians to starve to death, just to lose a little weight". This style of politics has no place in the modern world.
14. The British are partially responsible for the situation
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (05.31.06)
During the British Mandate (after they defeated Turkey and took over ruling what was then called "Palestine") they turned their backs while thousands and thousands of Arabs crossed over into "palestine." It is these Arabs descendants who are those living in Israel today. There was never a Palestinian people. At the same time, they put restrictions on Jews wanting to return to their Homeland and who were forced - during World War II - to go back to Europe and be murdered by the Nazis. Every time there was an Arab riot, it wasn't the Arabs who were punished but the Jews!! In response, they publilshed a White Paper restricting the numbers of Jews allowed into the country out of fear of the Arabs (or was it really because of their bias towards them?) The Jews of Britian had better get their asses out of there and come home!! And we'll fight the enemy together!!
15. # 1
Ivri   (05.31.06)
It all seems good to you, except you have one problem. We are not going away,AND, we know what it is all about since we have seen this and more before. Amazing how you choose what to boycot.Because if you do a boycott, simply using your computer for anything you are using a long list of programs and hardware invented $ developed in Israel. Had a relative with a heart problem?...u better not agree to a Stent procedure, since it was developed in Israel....and on and on. So Nabulsi, maybe you should stop using anything Jewish/Israeli,and crawl back to the cave you came from.
16. A response to Rustum
Kate ,   London   (05.31.06)
"The tide is turning against the racist foundations of the Israeli state," 1) In other words, you are working for the destruction of the Jewish state and not the so-called "occupation". 2) Why no complaints about the intense racism of the Arab states? These are states where: Jews are not even allowed to live, 800,000 Jews were ethnically cleansed, Jews were treated as third-class citizens when they were allowed to live there. 3) After the Holocaust, the genocide of the Jewish people in Europe, in which virtually every European state including Britain collaborated, I do not believe that it is Israel's right to exist which should be called into question but Europe's. 4) Your initial premise is completely off the mark. Israel's economy is booming, far outstripping the UK's rate of growth. Indeed, many billions are being invested in Israel by companies such as Intel and Microsoft and also by world-famous investors like Warren Buffet. In addition the Intifada is dead and Hamas is being boycotted by much of the world. The Palestinian economy is in complete ruins and your people are turning against themselves in open gun battles. The tide turning against Israel? Only in your dreams.
17. #1
Jane   (05.31.06)
Nabulsi, you are full of it. You all have not only demanded that the world see things your way, you have killed those who don't agree with you, including many of your own people. You think you are quite clever with your "apartheid" bullshit, and your "racist" crap, but none of that is applicable to Israel. You, however, are total Jew-hating racists, as are all of your Muslim brothers. Not to mention the apartheid policies of Islamic states.
18. #5
Jane   (05.31.06)
Israel is the State of the Jews. One tiny state. It is clearly anti-Semitism. Brits are profoundly anti-Semitic and have always been. It is a rarity to find a Brit sympathetic to Israel. Quite interesting, since Britain is largely responsible for the horrible situation. You never got over Lawrence of Arabia. You really think those people like you. The London bombings were apparently a display of affection. Lastly, I doubt you have any Jewish friends. If you do, they are not the kind I would associate with.
19. Ellen Prescott- But why Israel?
gene ,   Israel   (05.31.06)
One need not send Jews to concentration camps in order to called anti-semitic. My question is why Israel? The fact that Israel is held to another standard than EVERY other country in the World is indicative of anti-Semitism- PERIOD! Why are you not boycotting Indian, Russian, or Chinese products- those countries are responsible for mass opression of Kashmir,Chechnya, and Tibet respectively, and yet there is no academic boycott- or ANY talk of boycott of those or other grim regimes! That is why you, Ellen, are an anti-semite.
20. The history always repeats itself
Memento   (05.31.06)
All this already happened once, just replace the then word "Jews" by more politically correct today "Israelis". First, they blame Israelis for everything - suffering of other people, all the problems in the world, control of the media and the governments. Next, they boycott Israeli academics, Universities and soon - businesses. Next, they will burn books written by Israelis. What will they burn after books ? We know - it happened once. But those who appease terrorists must remember: when they will come for you there will be no one left to speak out for you.
21. It is anti Semitic.
Albert ,   London, UK   (05.31.06)
It is anti Semitic. Sudan's regime killed two million - no calls for boycott, China systematically annihilating Tibet - no boycott, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russian genocidal war in Chechnya.....it is all about Jews, Jews are the only target in Britain.
22. #5 Oh Ellen, how very proper
Dan ,   USA   (05.31.06)
you are still a bigot. Or at least led by the nose by the racist media of yours. They don't properly report the news and they duped you!
23. # 12 James
yakov shsni ,   IL   (05.31.06)
Succinctly, this is a load of crap.
24. Britain's weak Jewish community
Larry ,   Eastbourne, UK   (05.31.06)
Everything in this article is true, indeed the author understates reality, but as all the arguments about the BBC, academic boycotts etc are familiar I'll just briefly address the issue of Britain's Jewish community. The community and its leaders as a force for fighting antisemitism are pathetically weak. This is partly weakness in the face of the sheer extent of antisemitic and anti-Israel hatred, and partly the perennial desire not to "rock the boat" and the wish to appear "more British than the British" that has long been a feature of British Jewry. "Jewish leaders" do not want to stir up trouble. They prefer to keep a low profile. They like to show how loyal they are to the Queen. They like to go along with the myth that there can be "a Palestinian state living in peace side by side with Israel" because they don't want to admit the truth of the Palestinians' genocidal objectives. A lot of them (including the Chief Rabbi with his criticisms of Israel) want to be considered good Jews in the game of "good Jew, bad Jew" that the antisemites so love. Remember Michael Howard, the former (Jewish) leader of the Conservative Party? So far as I can recall he never once made a major public speech (i.e. not a speech just to Jews) strongly supporting Israel and denouncing anti-Israel terrorism. He was just another politician cynically seeking power and recognising that for this purpose "British" Muslims had to be appeased. He wasn't interested in Israel at all. I'd like to end with Tony Blair's recent speech to the charity Jewish Care. I read about this in the Jewish press because - surprise - it wasn't mentioned by the mainstream media. Blair said that it was high time to end the scandalous hypocrisy whereby terrorism aimed at Israel was regarded as OK while other terrorism was not. I applaud his sentiments, but if I'd been there I would have asked if he said the same thing when speaking to Muslims.
25. So what's new? To the "winging Brits"
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (05.31.06)
The double standards used by the "British haters of Israel" are disgusting. You talk about boycotting South Africa, Why aren't you boycotting Zimbabwe (see Sky TV report today)? Why aren't you boycotting China whose human rights history is appalling? Why is there no "academic" pressure on Burma (Myanmar) or is the house arrest of Aung Sang Su Kyi not important enough for you? Why are you not boycotting the United States? How many more Iraqis must die in the Bush-Blair lust for oil? For that matter you should boycott yourselves because of your human rights violations in the past and in the present i.e. Iraq and the racism against Muslims in the UK! You do not take into consideration that 50 million Arabs from 22 countries declared war on Israel and the Jewish people and most of those countries, even today, work for Israel's destruction and the annihilation of her people. You are not concerned that many of the victims of Palestinian terror are Israeli Arabs who are full citizens of the State of Israel and have all the rights that all Israeli citizens have and are full represented in the Knesset. The “Occupation” that you are so concerned with was the result of constant terrorist attacks by your Arab friends. Arab belligerence has claimed the lives of over 20,000 Israelis of all creeds! Britain has a long and disgusting history of Anti-Semitism. Examples of these are the expulsion of the Jews and the Pogroms in York during the Reign of Queen Anne; the despicable treatment of Lord Rothschild who would not swear an oath on the Christian Bible and was thus prevented from taking his seat in Parliament for may years. More recently, you own Prince Philip has admitted that the Royal Family had “inhibitions” about Jews and Prince Harry gets dressed up as a Nazi! Add to this the fact the Late Duke of Windsor admired and befriended Hitler show that you are indeed a lovely lot. A further shame on the British people is how your post war government reneged on the Balfour Declaration, detained victims of the Nazis who had survived the Concentration Camps in Britain’s own Concentration Camps on Cyprus. Your government even tried to return the Holocaust survivors to Germany! Britain did everything possible to deny Jews entry to Israel (then Palestine), disarmed them and left them to be butchered by the Arabs whom they had armed to the teeth. You holier than thou Brits have no right to criticize any one. The only thing that you have a right to is to bow your heads in shame over your ignominious history and the pain you have caused all over world. Just look at the world’s trouble spots. 99% of them were once part of the British Raj and were abandoned by you and left in chaos. Great Britain is today a country of racist drunkards, YOBS and sniveling wingers when they don't get their way. Actually, there is nothing "Great" about it at all.
26. To: All freedom fighters
Viktor Kanevsky ,   NY, USA   (05.31.06)
I totally support yours right to criticize any country in the world that implemented wrong (in yours opinion) policy. It is yours right. You are claiming that Israel is no longer treated differently from other countries, that you condemn Chinese activities in Tibet and Sudanese activities in Darfur. Very good. I even support you in this. My problem with people like you is that you not boycott Chinese universities and academics; you never boycott communist regimes, when they jailed, expel, and starve to death millions of people. You never denounce PA when it tolerated and supported suicide bombers blowing innocent school and university students or discrimination of Palestinian Christians. Why? I do not think that majority of you anti-Semites. You just consciously or unconsciously understand that Israel is different. What ever you’ll do to Chinese scientists they will never be able to influence communist government to change there policy in Tibet. Because, Israel is a democratic country, and nobody there will go to jail, for nonviolent protesting government policy. Can you admit that it is double standards? And second, when you mention you achievement in South Africa, you forget to mention you support for freedom fighter Mugabe in Zimbabwe and bunch of other less known but as cruel as him leaders of other failing African regime. Do you fill yourself responsible for there genocide?
27. to #14, please!
shai ,   T-A   (05.31.06)
1922 : first british census in Palestine : moslems : 589 000, jews: 83000, christians : 71000. Forget this old crap! There were inhabitants in this country when the alya started and most of them were arabs.
28. Preston, USA
Rustum ,   London, UK   (05.31.06)
Talk about vile racist ranting. "Oh wait, the a-rabs must smoke it " Can you not bring yourself to write about people as human beings? Why the necessary demeaning and racists words?
29. Get real
DPC ,   England, UK   (05.31.06)
This news report is degenerate. "An anti-Israel and anti-Semitic WAVE is CONSUMING England." My God, anyone would think England had already built death camps and bought the Zyklon B... --- Get REAL!!! Let me re-phrase the headline more accurately for you, "An [ISLAMIC] wave is consuming England[...and causing it to vomit out stupid dhimmi liberals]"
30. STOP THE ANTI-BRITISH RANTS
Ari ,   Manchester   (05.31.06)
I really cant trust an article that fails to make a distinction between English and British; you are not always English if you are British! How can I trust an article that is written by someone who doesnt know the basics of the UK. This is just another article in the Ynet crusade against the UK. Every day there is another article about British anti-semitism. The article seems to suggest that all 67,000 univerisity lecturers voted for this boycott. In reality it was just over 100! There IS anti-semitism in the UK, but it isnt hardly as bad as in the rest of Europe and the rest of the world. Every time an article is posted like this, people on the talkback use this as an excuse to demand that British Jews should flee the persecution of their native country and go to Israel! And we'll be safe in Israel? give me a break! there is loads of discrimination among Jews in Israel. I had a wonderful time in Yeshiva in Jerusalem, but to expect people to go to live in Israel because its safer is frankly a joke. Firstly, let someone who actually knows the UK write an article, someone who knows the difference between England and Britain for instance. Secondly stop trying to turn us into asylum seekers, life here for 99% of Jews is great. Thank you
