not a suicide bomber.all this is a bit over the top.ripping his tongue out ,putting him to death.any parrot worth his salt knows a few salty words.this is common knowledge to anyone who owns a parrot. he could be useful to olmert when he sees mubarek.the parrot can let fly if mubarek steps out of line.

10. a few words on parrots
michael ,   karmiel, israel   (06.04.06)
as a parrot owner, just a few quick words on parrots, cussing, and punishment: First, it really is in poor taste to teach a parrot to cuss in the first place. they don't know what they are saying. Second, physical punishment when the bird cusses will simply reinforce the behavior, while severing the tongue will not stop the bird from talking as parrots are not mammals and have a very different vocal aparatus. Finally, it takes a great deal of time, patience, and behavioral modification to stop a parrot from swearing once he's learned that it's ok and fun, and/or gets a good reaction. So, Zarif did a good thing in adopting a disagreeable bird, and he needs to keep it away from people, supplied with positive interaction whenever it IS NOT cussing, and simply ignore it when it swears. This can take a long time to have an effect. Two last comments: my own bird, a 6 yr old Amazona, has cussed twice in her life. Both times the offending word was quietly ignored. Finally, on the subject of 'smart bird, to learn hebrew,' a parrot will learn to mimic the language or languages spoken to it. As I said, they don't really know what they are saying. I hope the bird has a good future, but it'll take work on some human's part.
11. Talmudic Law
Thomas Lowinger ,   New York, USA   (06.04.06)
It is inconceivable that a Rabbi would have ruled to harm the parrot. The tractate of Sanhedrin requires 3 judges to sentence an animal to death. There are major discussions on what to do with an ox that harms humans. It is not trivial. The story must be a joke.

Michael, I loved your explanations and how you love animals! It is a beautiful lesson.
13. Why not?
jason white ,   afula,israel   (06.04.06)
Why not sentence child molesters, drug dealers, dealers in child porn and rapists to death? How about severing the tongues of politicians and rabbis with nothing better to do than threatening parrots?
14. But where is that injunction preventing the destruction of..
Steve ,   USA   (06.05.06)
B"H But where is that injunction preventing the destruction of... Jewish homes east of the fence. It is one thing to respect swearing birds. Why are the Jews treated even lower than parrots when they were simply send by previous administrations to settle the land? They did nothing wrong. Where is thier protection? If moves are being made in a few weeks, where is that funding for those getting attacked by the government? Why is there all this sympathy for the bird and no sympathy for the human?
15. Who is first to be blamed ?
Marcel Abel ,   Thoiry, France   (06.05.06)
Garbage in, garbage out. That's the way parrots work, not all species, only a few ones are able to mimic human speech. My modest concluding input : parrots (from dialect Fr. perrot, dimin. of Pierre, Peter) shall not be condemned to silence neither to death, but to life, cussing or not. God created them that they speak out when men remain silent. Strange ? How can they mimic us if we remain silent ? Eureka ! The inner man in us broke silence and began to teach parrots! That's the story to be taken with many precautions, not literally (except for etymology). Have a nice day all !
16. cussing parrots !
Marcel Abel ,   Thoiry, France   (06.05.06)

17. Err... what happened to FREEDOM OF SPEECH?!?!

18. cussing parrot
Hilda ,   USA   (06.06.06)
This is so ridiculous to be absurd. Doesn't the court have better things to do and certainly the dear rabbis should be kept busy with more important activities like seeing that all the children be fed and cared for---so that we no longer hear about children be abused and starving. .
19. wow a bird makes this much commotion
angred pali ,   Usa   (06.20.06)
WOW thid totally came as a shocker 2 me.....when i first heard bout it i didnt believe it, but no i guess i do, the gov't is willing 2 spend millions of dollars on a stupid parrot that doesnt even know what its talking about rather then use that money to stop the war, or for the isrealis fix what they have ruined in all of palestine.....and yes palestine not isreal, poor parrot, his owner probably taught him 2 say that just 2 get the attention!
20. Kill the person not the bird
USA ,   USA   (06.21.06)
Someone had to teach the poor bird the words, he didn't just start reading the dictionary and picking the bad ones. Give me freaking break. Why doesn't the guy just give the bird to the people that want him? Idiot
21. Cussing parrot
Steve ,   Cambridge UK   (07.16.06)
When I adopted my parrot an African Grey his previous keeper warned me that he had some bad language. He swore a few times and I just ignored it. The only time he swore at me directly was when I disturbed his sleep. I thought it appropriate at the time. Now he never swears yet he does talk a graet dea,l often in a meaning full way. The idea of removing its tongue is unbelievably cruel. They use their tongues for eating and drinking and would probably starve with out it. As Micheal pointed out they don't use them for talking they have another organ for that in their throats.
