Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'd really like to know .... Is the Western world (and of course Israel) better off with Assad then without him? He may not be the most pleasant neighbor in the world, but he is a known quantity, and his government is somewhat secular. And what are the chances that a much more radical entity would take power?
