31. #26 The dumbing down of Ellen
Cynthia ,   USA   (06.11.06)
One must question Ellen's IQ level and why she places so much importance on a test that is only as reliable as the person administering it. Ellen is so busy boycotting Israel that she really knows very little about Israelis. 50% of the residents of Israel immigrated from arab lands to avoid persecution. Some of the newest immigrants are from Africa and South America. Ellen can shut her eyes but she cannot ignore the hundreds of terror attacks directed at Israel by Palestinians since 2000. The British accent is charming but it doesn't disguise vile bigotry and blind hate. Ellen's statements are emotional outbursts void of fact.

33. A cordial response to #27
Ellen Prescott ,   Southsea, Hampshire   (06.11.06)
The people who teach our children and conduct our studies are our intelligentsia. To use loaded descriptions such as 'second-rate' and 'extreme fringe leftists' is useless. Britain's academe is vast and varied, however, we are mostly all united in our opposition to racism, injustice, and apartheid. I do admit that Ashkenazi Jews have been very successful. However, not quite to the extent as you note. Whilst the achievements of Ashkenazi Jewry have been great and very much valued, they pale in comparison to those of the UK (Shakespeare, Graham Bell, Darwin, to name a fraction). Israel is indeed an apartheid state. I urge you to read this report http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,,1703245,00.html with an open mind. Were the people around the world who boycotted apartheid South Africa racist against whites? The vote to reinstate the boycott is going to be launched very soon. And, indeed, this time it will be everlasting until Israel ends its crimes against humanity and apartheid systrem. Whilst it may be true that Israel's economy is growing, I suggest that you read the article in the Money section of this website: 'Israel has the highest poverty rate in Western world.' Britain's economy is expanding quite robustly, however I am disgusted by new Labour's extreme capitalist policies. I see nothing wrong with ensuring fairness in society and the economy simultaneously. Britain's housing market is in crisis, the demand for housing is simply too large. There isn't anywhere to build all the housing. That is assuredly a sign of a healthy economy. I don't believe that most American Jews despise Britain. American Jews are like all other Americans in their Anglophilia. Israel-centric fanatics may hate Britain, but they represent a tiny fraction of American Jewry. I should like to add that whilst I agree that Jews are disproportionately wealthier than non-Jews. It is only by a small margin. The wealthiest international corporations in the world are British, namely BP and the Royal Dutch/Shell group. 0.006 per cent of the top five hundred American corporations have a Jewish CEO. According to Forbes magazine, 6 per cent of the top 500 richest people in the world are Jews. Kate, I'd love to see your statistics.

Obviously our neighbours don't have a higher IQ, hence your example doesn't catch. I know their education is worse because of the conflict. But you, britain don't have that conflict. As for more than 10 percent immigrtans... pretty much ALL of us are immigrants. We all came from other cultures. As for Americans liking britons more. Just look at the comments from people from USA in this very forum and you will see that you have no idea what you are talking about. And none of the people I met were evangelicals. They were all ordinary non-religious christians. Anything else you need clear? Get your facts straight.
36. #33 This boycott divided British academia
Cynthia ,   USA   (06.11.06)
The AUT learned first hand how potentially damaging this boycott could be. It was overturned following an incredible grass roots effort by those who truly oppose racism and injustice. Ellen was obviously not part of that group. Her goal is to silence communication hoping to isolate Israel. Without communication and understanding, the conflict will never end. Ellen doesn't look for solutions. Her needs come first. A positive outcome of this boycott was to highlight and expose the existence of anti-semitism on British campuses and to open discussions to address this issue. Those discussions are continuing. Ellen's post to Kate highlights Ellen's phobic obsession with Jews and her confusion over the reality of Israel. Yesterday she pointed out that Israel is a rich, first world nation questioning why Israel needs foreign aid. Today she refers to Israel having one of the highest poverty rates. I wish Ellen would make up her mind. Ellen also pretends to be an expert on American Jewry and continues to put her big foot in her mouth. I don't know anyone who hates Britain or suffers from "Angophilia". Do you become a fanatic simply because you support Israel? Ellen seems to think so. She obviously has a lot of time on her hands for pure nonsense.

Trust me, Ellen. If they knew what you REALLY are, you would have been escorted to JFK Airport and unceremoniously booted out. Americans HATE terror enablers.

Most Americans know what hypocrits you Brits are. With your pretentions of civility, you are the most over-bearing, self-righteous and irritating.

have a good scratch while enjoying your boycott, it will only add to your pleasure.

41. 33 Ellen: If this is UK intelligentsia NO wonder the UK is
Gabrielle Goldwater ,   Geneva Switzerland   (06.12.06)
A failure going down the drain Your poor educational standards are NOT even recognized in Switzerland - NO school final Diplomas from you count here - They have to sit Swiss exams and redo all. Now what does that tell anyone about British intelligentsia. When 3 A-Levels are NOT valid for university entrance in Switzerland
42. #9 superior intellect...
DR ,   Florida, USA   (06.12.06)
Yes, we see this British intellect by watching your hooligans fight and riot for football games. Of course there are stupid people everywhere, but to say that your country is superior to any other modern country is just stupid. Israel has developed a lot of sophisticated military, technological and medical advances which England, no doubt, uses and vice versa. You sound like a little kid when you post. And by the way, my daddy can definitely kick your daddy's arse!!!
43. Academic boycott
Anthony ,   London, UK   (06.12.06)
The UK 'academics' spend so much time playing politics they never do any work. Then they strike for more pay!
44. UK ban of Israeli academics lifted
Andy ,   Swindon, UK   (06.13.06)
It must would be nice just once to hear some discussion about Israel without its supporters screaming 'anti-semitism' at every given opportunity. Perhaps when you all calm down a bit and spend some time looking at the appaling record of Israel's human rights abuses and illegal occupation of another country, you may take a few minutes to ask is this really the work of anti-semities or are there actually some genuine reasons why people find Israel's conduct distasteful. Until then, feel free to cover your ears and counter valid arguments with purile name calling.
45. Wishful thinking!
Sue Blackwell ,   Birmingham, UK   (06.13.06)
What nonsense. You have simply swallowed the press release from Bar-Ilan unquestioningly. If AUT had cancelled the merger, the NATFHE boycott would still be in force! When the merger took place on 1st June, ALL previous policy of both NATFHE and AUT lapsed and became merely "advisory" to the new union, UCU. As a matter of fact, AUT policy was not anti-boycott in any case, regardless of the spin that some tried to put on it: it merely laid down a procedure to be followed before an institution outside the UK could be boycotted. I look forward to helping to shape UCU policy on this important issue, and to reading about it, hopefully more accurately, in the Israeli press.
