Marcel, as I recall, Golda resigned after Israel's worst-ever intelligence failure in 1973. I have not really paid much attention to her, however, so I'm not sure what her real record was except for this catastrophic bit of negligence.

Security is a complex matter. If Israel thinks its security rests exclusively or primarily on IDF, let them think again. Otherwise they'll just continue banging their heads against a wall. I get the feeling that there will only be peace and security when all things in the conflict are resolved. Until then, partial solutions will have minimum positive effect, or will even do more harm than good, as it was with the withdrawal from Gaza.

Golda was a good PM she wud be turning in her grave seeing what her party condones today. Ultimately she had to pay for the intelligence debarcle of '73 she was let down by Moshe Dayan who still believed themselves as superhuman status. So she paid the price by resigning. But Golda ultimately goes down as one of Israels true heroic PM's. She was tough and un-afraid and commanded much respect.

In matters pertaining to national defense and the security of a country, and in times of attacks from the enemies or in War, and addressing existential threat to the nation, the politicians should listen to and follow their Generals who know what they are doing in defense of the country. What's with the Golda Meir thing ? She was a very intellegent woman, in the early twenties and indeed all through the formative years she made considerable contributions in various important positions, she was a conniving scoundrel as a politician ( required quality ), but as prime minister she was a disaster. She was only placed in that position by her conniving cronies in order to prevent either Allon or Dayan getting the job( leaders of two long standing rival camps within the party ). Had one of them got the job everything would have been different, then and today, especially had it been Allon. As you probably know, the damning part of the Agranat Inquiry is not to be published, no time scale at the moment, it is my humble opinion that she will be found lacking when it is finally published. I know she was agreat hero with American Jewry, but she was not all she was made out to be.
