1. Does Abbas have power?
salem ,   Egypt   (07.01.06)
I wonder if Abbas himself has any power on Al Aqsa brigades!! obviously not. I think the loose connection between military freedom fighters and the political leasers is something important in order to safegurad the resistance. Can Abbas order Al Aqsa brigades to stop qassam attacks!
2. keystone cops
Don ,   Houston Texas   (07.01.06)
this is a tragic comedy. an elected government body can't figure out how to wipes it's own ass without getting crap everywhere. what a bunch of bumbling idiots. but it stands to reason, if no one can make a decision then no one can take responsibility, with no one taking responsibility for anything the lowest common denominator comes into play and maybe they should just launch more qassams, should someone point the direction for them they may not know, how do these people expect to be effecient at anything they do when no one can stand up and make a decision? Israel needs to take better advantage of this situation and wipe out all of these government lackeys. it's amazing just a couple tank rounds a few missiles, take out an electric plant and you've effectively bombed these monkees back to the stone age. Remember, if you are not a muslim then you and your family are infidels worthy of nothing more then being killed, and be assured that the death of you and your family is being planned right now, suicide bombers, explosives, a subhuman hiding behind a mask toting a gun, bio or chemical weapons, all infiodels must die.
3. planned confusion
Marcel ,   Florida   (07.01.06)
drag it out and wear Israel down ,they have always capitulated over time and pressure. Remember the Church of the Nativity seige in Bethlehem when the Palestinian terrorists invaded the church and desecrated it ? Israel is the one which caved in and the desecraters were rewarded thank's to the world community which will not tolerate another Israeli win over the Arabs. They figure five defeats of the arabs is enough and now is Israel's time to lose. And so Israel is hamstrung from defeathing the Palestinmian's Hence we have a proven weak Israeli leader in power to accomplish the will of the globalists.
4. Traditional Islamist mess up
Hiram al masry ,   tel aviv   (07.01.06)
The situation demonstrates that there is no control on anything in Gaza, that Abbas is powerless and that the territories are now ( Like before ) a zone of non-law, just like in feudal times, just like in other warlord places. The Jihadists are always succesful with 2 things : Killing and obscurantism !
5. same bs - political and military leadership - yawn
michael ,   tel aviv & london   (07.01.06)
just two days ago the 'political' leadership wanted to negotiate how many prisoners Israel was prepared to realease. When israel said 'none' the 'political' leadership said 'ah, we have no control over the .'military' leadership'. Very convenient, but don't Abbas and the others know that the world has seen through this smokescreen.
6. To Salem the Egyptian #1

The answer to your question is a resounding NO. But your question should have been"Does Abas realy WANTto controll the mish mash of riff raff terrorists in his domain" The answer to that is agan...NO! Brace yourself Salem, the fight in AZA is actually to protect your country AND Jordan from these Homicidal-Suicidal idiots. Shalom.

10. WHO'S ON FIRST?
Arik Silverman ,   Milwaukee USA   (07.01.06)
This is like an old Abbot and Costello routine. Of course the Hamas government can't claim to control what's going on: that would be an admission of guilt. At most, they could say they'll "try to influence" the militants. But Abu Quisling Abbas is a total hypocrite for accusing the Hamas government. After all, is Abbas behind Al Aqsa terrorism? Is Abbas able to control their Qassams? Is the man really so totally stupid that he doesn't realize how foolish he looks accusing Hamas of this while he can't control his own people?
11. Who is in charge? They say they don't know.
RCA ,   USA   (07.01.06)
All the time, always the same excuse, that no one knows who is in charge within these terrorist organizations. They haven't even decided among themselves. It makes no difference this time that the organization was elected government. Always a red herring, always some run-a-round. They are a configureation of loose cannons dedicated to immorality ,pain hardship , ignorance, and hate. Maybe the Palestinians are just too ignorant to run a fairly honest and reasonable government because there is little history of that in the Arab world. There are few if any models for them to emulate.
12. Contrived Confusion
Dr.Rick ,   USA   (07.01.06)
Israel has seen it before. The world has seen it before. This dilema of who is in charge among the terrorists is a contrived smoke screen designed to stall for time and create as much chaos and confusion as possible while the dark forces of evil scatter to manipulate the worlds media and then to regroup a safe distance away and begin to plot their next sinister diversion. Perhaps they will play the victim a few more times...And on...And on...in a continueing cycle.
13. Astute observation Mr. Don (#2).
Dr. Rick ,   USA   (07.01.06)
The same goes for you Mr. Michael (#5) . You seem to have got it also Mr. Marcel (#3) though I do not necessarily agree with your final conclusion .

The most profound and accurate statement I have read on Ynet in quite a while.
15. no confusion, at all!
Ahmad Abouali ,   Nablus-Falasteen   (07.01.06)
there is no confusion at all; the issue is straight forward and it is as clear as the sun in the middle of the Arabian desert day: free our women, young boys and abducted political leaders of the Zionist concentration camps, we will free the Zionist henchman. Abbas, in his Ramallah office, is trying to show he is in control by making thngs look confused, but no, he is the one who lost it all, when his Oslo with the enemy eviporated by the Zionists' stone walling, for the past 13 years. From now in, there will be only one method we will use with the Zionist occupiers: resistance.
16. They sure know how to shoot themselves

18. I Will Give to Protect Israel
Dave Levi ,   Burbank. USA   (07.01.06)
To Marcel: fyi I will give my life to protect Israel from the vulture Muslim fanatics and their anti-Semitic supporters. Would you do the same? I am prepared to go to Israel, and join whatever I can to use my experience in enforcement. Are you prepared to go..or are you "blessing" the Jewish nation in this time of crisis, only? This latest flare-up, caused by Hamas's support, encouragement and financing of terrorism against the Jewish state (I ask, didn't anyone know about the 900 foot tunnel beforehand?), is just one more episode in the 100 year old conflict to rid the M.E. (and the world) of it's Jews. We have been referred to by every slanderous (and more) remark in the book. According to the clerics, even the trees and rocks will cry our location. Cries of "Jihad" are being heard all over. That simply means, " to the Jew". The Arab enemy went to the UN, and no mention of WHY the minor incursion was made to the delegates. Just more Arab lies and perfigy. Who cares which Hamas faction is involved, has power and influence.
19. with whom to negotiate for peace
confusion ,   leaders of terrorist   (07.01.06)
I just wonder the world claims and rejects the arbitrary setting of borders as unacceptable to bring peace to the Middle East, which can only be achieved by and through negotiations, so can any intelligent political savvy politician give the answer to whom should Israel turn to make peace with, there is no such entity of a cohesive leadership in the Islamic nations, nor do they honor or perform according to any agreements that was accepted by their so called leaders, or does the free world concur with the Islamic demand that Israel must be disbanded to bring the elusive peace to the Middle East. And if such event does occur just what will it achieve will it stop the Iranian design of conquest, the Kurdish issue with Iraq, Syria and Turkey, the Somalia conflict, the genocide occurring today in the Sudan (not a historical event), the Chechnya insurrection, the continual terrorist acts perpetrated in the name of Islam against the Christian populations living under Moslem rule in Africa, which to date more then 2,000,000, yes TWO MILLION non believers in Islam were murdered in the name of the Islamic God. Will such event stop the Osama Bin Laden’s outright continual harpings or incitements against the free western democracies. If the answer yes then the world must convince the Jews that they as a people are not wanted in this world nor should they be authorized to be self governing and they should for the sake of peace disband so that the world will live in peace, but if the answer is NO, then the world must not allow the continual injustice inflicted upon Israel. To criticize, condemn and to arbitrarily reject any actions taken by Israel to defend and protect their citizens is very easy, what is missing from that equations is a realistic reasonable fair and just solution, the same solution as the country that proffers such course of action will be willing to take in the event they are subjected to the same terror acts that Israel is forced to suffer on a daily basis.
20. Gilad's life is no more important than the thousands
Ellen Prescott ,   Southsea, Hampshire   (07.01.06)
of Palestinians' lives in Israeli prisons. 10,000+ Palestinians in Israeli prisons and the Palestinians, being a nation under occupation, are unable to do anything about it. 1 Israeli in Palestinian custody, and Israel declares war and sends 1,000 bombs into Gaza, rampages throughout one of the poorest regions on the planet with bulldozers and tanks, cuts off electricity to all Gazans, destroys the infrastructure still standing, and arrests dozens of democratically-elected officials. Hmm, sounds terribly unbalanced, doesn't it?
21. Sunnis killed 66Shia today.. This is NOT communal punishment

22. #15
Vorax   (07.01.06)
"there will be only one method we will use with the Zionist occupiers: resistance" - there will be many methods Zionist occupiers will use with your resistance - like liquidatoin and/or imprisonment of leaders, military blockade, and sustained perssure on population.
23. #15, you forget...
shlomo doe ,   usa   (07.01.06)
#15, you forget, that the palestinian prisoners are not choirboys (or choirgirls). They hurt people. Thats why they are locked up. Why should they be released? If I murdered your family, and was caught and jailed, why then should I be released in a " prisoner exchange"?. You may not want to see it that way, but several million civilized people do see it that way. And all the jihad and muslim ideology in the world is not going to change that simple fact. The Palestinians and their Arab brethern must make a choice. Are they going to be civilized, or not?
24. "Who's on first?"
Richard Horman ,   Baltimore, USA   (07.01.06)
This reminds me of Abbott and Costello's classic comic routine. The tragedy is that this is deadly serious. Hamas PA government; Hamas Damascus leadership and Hamas local thugs are each trying to exercise leadership. None of them seems to have a clue regarding hierachical authority. To Israel they say, "Invade Gaza, Please..." With Israel in Gaza, Hamas now has an excuse for its failure to effectively govern. "What can Palestinians expect from a PA government with Israel hung around its neck?"
25. #18
L Reik ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (07.01.06)
So when are you coming over? We here need many more committed Jews and not just talk. L Reik
26. to Ellen #20
Mike ,   Atlanta, USA   (07.02.06)
As you phrase the situation, it sounds terribly unbalanced, yes. However, you neglect to mention the IDF's simultaneous efforts to stop Gazan Arabs from firing missiles on civilian locations with a specific purpose of killing civilians. An incursion in response to an onslaught of missile fire in civilian areas sounds rather proper in my estimation, Dr. Prescott.
27. HERE'S A PREDICTION
Art ,   Sydney Australia   (07.02.06)
The soldier will not be released anytime soon, and the crisis will gradually fade from the news. The soldier will not be killed either, because the Pal terrorists need to keep him alive to use as a bargaining chip. Israel will not invade Gaza (much too dangerous). Eventually, the IDF troops and armour now on the Gaza border will be sent home and the crisis will slowly de-escalate. Then, say in about 6 months time, quiet behind the scenes negotiations will lead to some sort of prisoner swap deal, say 1,000 Pal prisoners for this one soldier. Meantime, the rockets attacks, suicide bombings, stabbings etc will go on and it will return to business as usual. Once again Israel has been humiliated and defeated. Score: Pals 6 Israel 0.
28. Forgive them father
Jes Inri ,   Israel   (07.02.06)
for they know not what they do
29. To #20
Elie Friedman ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (07.02.06)
If the Israelis agree to release Palestinian prisoners (read terrorists and murderers) from their jails in exchange for kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, it will set a dangerous precedent. Such a move would only encourage future abductions of Israeli civilians and soldiers in the future. Would any responsible government (inclusive of the UK and the US) accept such a situation - a situation in which terrorists have incentive to kidnap its citizens? I call on all civilized nations to demand a diplomatic solution to the crisis in which the release of Corporal Shalit is ensured without pre-conditions. In the absence of said agreement, Israel has the right to secure his release through military actions. Because of the ongoing irresponsible action of Palestinian militants, innocent Palestinian civilians will continue to suffer. Its upsetting. The solution: the Palestinian people need to rise up against militants and pursue a path of peace and non-violence in place of support for terror.
30. Remember when Israel said "nobody to negotiate with"?
Howard ,   Pacific Coast, USA   (07.02.06)
Remember how people in Europe and people on this board said Israel wasn't serious about peace? Are any of you/them going to apologize now? What even Egypt is learning is that the Palestinian "Authority" has neither the will nor the ability to control the terror gangs, EVEN IN ITS OWN SELF-INTEREST. If there is no address for a "brotherly Arab state" to negotiate the simple matter of the release of one Israeli soldier, then how can there be an address with which Israel can hold substantive talks about peace, territory, religion, refugees or mutual security? If **ABBAS** can't find anyone who is willing to make decisions in a crisis, if power-broker ***EGYPT***, and Turkey, and the UN, and the US, and the EU, and the Arab League ***COMBINED*** can't find anyone who is willing to make firm decisions in a crisis, WITH WHOM IS ISRAEL SUPPOSED TO NEGOTIATE A PEACE AGREEMENTS? The truth is that in Gaza, any terror gang can do exactly as it pleases and blame Israel or Jews for the disastrous results, and Palestinian society will fall into line and support them; and Saudi, Syria or Iran will give them money, al Jazeera will give them lots of air time as heroes and martyrs, and the EU will say Israel needs to negotiate with them. This situation will ONLY improve when ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY finally comes into fashion among the Palestinian leadership, when Palestinian leaders decide that gaining a state requires that they first form a sovereign government that does not allow Islamic Jihad and HAMAS to make their own military and foreign policy, and when building a state for their children and grandchildren becomes more important to them than destroying someone else's.
