Nat, however, seems to take this a step further: "Be a Jew in Israel and a mentch everywhere else." That being the case - Nat, please move to Israel and be "much more Jewish." We're a small people a love of our own begs on its knees that we "apply within" for marriage. This has nothing to do with the quality of prospective gentile spouses (there are wonderful gentiles out there), but with the fact that for gentiles intermarriage does not diminish their numbers in the least, but for us its a death knell. There are lots of bright, upstanding, good-looking Jewish boys out there (and half of them live in your homeland!). As for your father's joke - its cute - but being Jewish isn't simple, let alone living in Israel - so it has to be for the right reasons on top of being for you.
