J K ,   NYC, USA   (07.23.06)
The UN NEVER fulfilled the assurances it gave Israel for what would happen if they implemented 425 and backed 100% out of Lebanon, which we all know was certified by thr UN. This current conflict can be laid at the UN's inability in the intervening 6 years to fulfill its own obligations to Israel by bringing pressure to bear to implement 1559. While the UN did NOTHING, Hizbullah entrenched themselves even more in Lebanon and built up a private army and arsenal outside the auspicies of the government to which it belonged. This current conflict can be laid at the door of the UN which throws good cocktail soirees, but cant save a single person for the life of it. I guess the world 'needs' it so countries can feel good about themselves like they are accomplishing something, when in reality, they do nothing. Even their soldiers dont do anything or choose sides. It's a sick joke that wont be disbanded soon although it should.
34. UN in Violation of UN Resolutions
Daniel Temkin ,   USA   (07.23.06)
It's ironic how the UN blames Israel for violating international law and for using 'disporportionate' force when this entire war could have been prevented if the UN had done its job in helping the Lebanese to manage a secure border with Israel, per the terms of UN Reso 1559. I think that Israel, Lebanon, the US, and the Sunni Muslim states should jointly file a serious censure against Kofi Annan for their criminal neglect of their obligations towards securing the border.
35. UN HYPOCRITES MUST FREE SUDAN'S JIHAD SLAVES & IDF SOLDIERS
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (07.23.06)
Bible, Leviticus 24:17 "If a man takes the life of any human being, he shall surely be put to death" Black Africans are the indigenous people of Sudan and are the majority population. The black Southern Sudanese Christians explain what "peace" means: If you agree to become a Muslim, you will have peace. If you reject Islam, you are at war. From 1955-1973, 1.5 million Christians were slaughtered by the Arab Muslim government in Khartoum. From 1983-2005, two million more Christians died from Khartoum's jihad. Murdering infidels is not considered a crime. Non-Muslim infidels are regarded as not entitled to human rights. Hundreds of thousands of Christians have been raped. Hundreds of thousands of Christian children and women taken for slaves. In the refugee camps, the Islamo-Fascist religious supremacist Khartoum government requires refugees to become Muslims in order to receive food and water. The genocide has resulted in the largest population of refugees on earth since the Second World War. The jihad in Sudan against Darfur's black African Muslims by Khartoum's racist Arab Muslim regime began in 2003. 400,000 black Muslims are dead. STOP Genocide - STOP Slavery - FREE the Slaves http://www.iabolish.org/ Bible, Exodus 21:16 "He who kidnaps a man, whether he sells him or he is found in his possession, shall surely be put to death"

38. UN has never fulfilled their obligation with UNIFIL
Gabrielle Goldwater ,   Geneva Switzerland   (07.23.06)
Makes one wonder if you, the UN, are unaware, that this is an attempt to misuse the UN in order to whitewash the terrorist gang and its state-sponsors that provoked the current situation in Lebanon. despite UNIFIL forces being placed there as so called protection of peace, A Peace that should include peace for Israel. The problem is - the UN already was/is there, has oodles of troops there, and they have yet to stop a single rock being thrown at Israel, let alone a Katyusha missiles ! The first UNIFIL troops arrived in the area on 23 March 1978. Incompetents from the Third World mostly, UNIFIL have been there ever since. They, the UNIFIL, have done absolutely nothing to stop any terror attacks on Israel nor to prevent all of south Lebanon being converted into the Hizbullah's launch pad. (see http://www.un.org/Depts/dpko/missions/unifil/background.html ) In short, the UN again and again has/is merely ignoring the rearming and shooting of thousands of upgraded new missiles into Israeli living rooms. The UN will be associated with the forces of Hate which provoked this tragedy, and contradict the acknowledgment by the G8 Summit of the universality of suffering in this conflict. The UN has shown it's ineffectiveness to never enforce the Resolutions 1559 Excerpts: 3 ..Calls for the disbanding and disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias; 4. Supports the extension of the control of the Government of Lebanon over all Lebanese territory; 7. Requests that the secretary general report to the Security Council within 30 days on the implementation by the parties of this resolution and decides to remain actively seized of this matter. But: Reality: The Security Council included NO provisions to implement the agreement, and the Lebanese government, which contains some Hizbullah ministers, is considered too weak to do so - which shows the constant UN failures, again and again. Lets not forget we ALL remember the UN - UNIFIL - failures and the UN's deceitful intentions and violations of Truth from the past: We have an experience with UNIFIL: When an Israeli was seized previously, they just watched. October 7th 2000: The Har Dov kidnap demonstrated that U.N. observers protected and defended Hizbullah terrorists who crossed a U.N.- certified border to kidnap Israeli soldiers on home ground, using cars with U.N. license plates, and under the cover of U.N. flags. Entire amazing UN Lies and story right here Har Dov Kidnapping - United Nations and Israel http://judaism.about.com/library/1_terrorism/bl_hardov_un.htm Israel shares the same goals as the international community, and the best option is full implementation of 1559. That's the way out of this crisis, and now is the time to implement it Mr. Brown nothing less will solve the crises.

41. Hizballah:return to where Muhammad MURDERED Jews 1400 YEARS
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (07.23.06)
ago. The entire problem is about the desire of Islamists to murder Jews (and other non-Muslims) in rebellion and rejection of Israel's G-D-Ruler of the Universe and G-D's Laws: "You shall not murder" HIZBALLAH REPEATS VOW OF DEATH TO ISRAELIS, AS PALESTINIAN AND SOME PAN-ARAB MEDIA ECHO HIZBALLAH'S VOICE By Michael Widlanski 19 July 2006 Hizballah's propaganda machine continues to threaten death and destruction to all Israelis in its regular radio, television and internet shows, and this message is being echoed by some of the most important Arab media... "Al-Mawt le-Isra'il"-"Death to Israel" chants Sheikh Hassan Nasserallah repeatedly in a montage television film shown many times daily on Hizballah's Al-Manar television station... "Nastarjiu Khaybar"-"We will return to Khaybar" declares a sonorous narrator, recalling the oasis of Khaybar where Muhammad slaughtered all the local Jews who opposed his views and leadership 1400 years ago... Several times an hour, Al-Manar television places a bull-eye on the name of different Israeli cities on a map, followed by explosions signaling the fate in store for the people living there...

D- ,   San Diego, USA   (07.23.06)
"It is horrific. I did not know it was block after block of houses," Jan Egeland, the UN emergency relief coordinator, told reporters as he toured the shattered Haret Hreik district. "It makes it a violation of humanitarian law." What a moron. He's obviously a prejudiced liberal Muslim mind-slave who's ready to spout out insane rhetoric and propaganda at the drop of a hat in support of Islamic Terror. Not even the slightest interest in fact-finding and far too ready to jump to conclusions. Perhaps this was the only idiot the UN could find who was dumb enough to obliviously stroll right into the middle of an active war zone.
50. More Slaughter in the Middle East
ajohnstone ,   edinburgh scotland   (07.24.06)
Once again in the Middle East innocent workers are being killed and useful structures destroyed. The immediate cause was the capture in a raid from Lebanon of two Israeli soldiers but the ultimate isssue was, once again, who controls this oil-rich region: the US and its allies or various local elites? All states are artificial and illegitimate but Israel is particularly so. Set up by colonists from Europe on the basis of fables recounted in a book supposedly emanating from a god, it has been armed and financed by the United States as its only reliable ally in the region. Over the years it has acted as America’s gendarme there to deal with sections of the local Arab ruling classes who have sought to challenge US domination. These sections, in their turn, have identified Israel for what it is and have sought to destroy it and have been able to win considerable popular support. This is not to say that Israel is under direct US control. The rulers of Israel have their own agenda and can, and do, act independently of their protector. But that’s a price the US has to pay to avoid sending its own troops to fight and die there. The US would like some compromise solution between Israel and local Arab elites but in the meantime gives Israel a virtual free hand, only issuing ritual appeals to it to exercise restraint. Hezbollah, the Shiite militia in Lebanon, is armed and financed by two states whose regime the US has vowed to change: Iran and Syria. It is entirely possible that the present crisis was deliberately provoked by Iran, which has ambitions to be the dominant regional power, as a means of bringing counter-pressure on the US in the diplomatic trial of strength going on over its nuclear programme, a means of showing that it too is not without bargaining counters. Israel, incidentally, is without doubt already a nuclear power, which shows up the US hypocrisy over the spread of nuclear weapons. So, as a conflict over which states and ruling classes should dominate the region, no working class interest is involved except in so far as it is they who are its innocent victims and need the killing, maiming and destruction to stop. Socialists are always spontaneously on the side of the oppressed against the oppressors and the massive use of overwhelming force by the state of Israel clearly exposes it as the oppressor. But just because we sympathise with the victims of Israeli oppression does not mean that we favour the solutions popular amongst them. A Palestinian state would be a capitalist state. "Anti-imperialism" is the slogan of local elites who wish to dominate the region in place of the US, a situation which would still leave the mass of the population there exploited and oppressed with the eternal problem of finding enough money to buy the things they need to live. Capitalism is a war-prone society with a built-in clash of interests between states over markets, sources of raw materials, trade routes and strategic points to protect these. In the Middle East the conflict is over oil, and strategic points to protect its supply and transport, which has already led to many wars there. The only lasting way out is to get rid of capitalism and replace it by a world society of common ownership and democratic control. On that basis, the resources of the world, including oil, could be extracted and used for the benefit of all the people of the world. Poverty and misery in the Middle East, as elsewhere, could be ended once and for all. The waste of arms and the horrors of war would disappear. Socialism is, quite literally and without exaggeration, the hope of humanity. (Editorial from next month's Socialist Standard) http://www.worldsocialism.org/spgb/moreslaughter.html

Israelis will never have security because they believe since the beginning of their history that everyone is their enemy starting with the Canaanites. The first act of genocide was the destruction of the ancient Canaanites and of Jericho, according to the Jewish bible. As much as I deplore the atrocities committed by radical Muslims and have no love for them, I cannot be sympathetic to a state founded on the anicient principles of killing off its neighbors because Yahweh tells them so. What has really changed in 3,000 years? Nothing, except know the Israelis have nukes, planes, missiles, and capital as well as propaganda and can kill at will. Good luck to the Jewish state. Do you feel any more secure know that you are bringing the world to the brink of a global holocaust? God bless you.
55. #8 You want to know the difference?
Adam Berliner ,   Miami, USA   (07.24.06)
Plain and simple: Hizbullah targets civilians deliberately and intentionally. Israel targets Hizbullah (not an easy task given they hide among civilians) and strategic targets to disrupt their communications and supply lines. This is war and war is hell. Civilians die in wars. That is a fact that, unfortunately, is unavoidable. Israel did not ask for this war, but it was forced upon them and they will do what needs to be done.

the Holocaust to the jews of europe was caused by national socialist!! what you call "european colonists" were in fact the off springs of Abraham who was born in Iraq. they were heading home after their European "hospitality" was enough. some were stopped by the British from reaching their goal ( the remnants of the death camps) which was a very sesitive gesture. as long as there are humans there will be war (unfortunately) other animals also fight for their territory. but you better be prepared to convert to Islam because that is the real war on the agenda. your utopian views won't save ( I wish they would-no sarcasm) I went to live in israel to protect my kids until they are old enough to protect themselves and not be at the mercy of the likes of you or anybody else. and if you don't approve---tough kookie crumbs on you and all the rest. I am glad (not happy) that Israel can hit back and in some ways I wish they would hurt them more because this region there are no innocents. as the population of the world grows so will the tensions regardless of any idiology. just sheer numbers will pollute the earth and change it enough that other living things will take over and our flash in time will pass. cheer up it will be worse. I reside in Italy but that is a private matter.

...precisely _who_ is responsible, and, precisely _how_ this is a war crime under the Geneva Conventions. ..mr Egeland either tells the world fairy tales, or, refers to the Geneva Conventions. ..also ask him why and how the norwegian police "did no war crime" when they arrested our about 753 Jews all over Norway and turned them over to Gestapo in Oslo for further shipment to Auschwitz. ..you might even be able to make him fix this by turning over these "cop" perpetrators. ..the Danes did the proper thing, the Danish Police even arrested a few of the over 8000 Jews they smuggled into Sweden. The Danes even managed to scare or whatever the SS from gassing the about 700 Jews that managed to run into Nazis. ..one question for you Jews: Did _any_ nation (other than Denmark) stand up for you during WWII?

59. #50 - You have no room to speak.
John Wadsworth ,   San Jose, CA (USA)   (07.24.06)
You are in a sinking boat. Socialism failed miserably in the last century as a viable economic experiment. It failed because it defies human experience, human existence and human nature. First, every socialist thinks socialism is a good thing - for everyone else, but not himself or herself. This is because babies learn four basic concepts they never loose - mommy, comfortable, happy and mine - in that order. Ruling cadres of socialist states have always acted selfishly by shamefully hording scarce or luxurious assets. In fact, they tended to privatize so much of the state's production for their benefit, that workers have ended up with a new enemy - their leaders - who rivaled their old capitalist masters for privations and violence. Nor were there any good reasons for such inequal treatment. The boobs and incompetents in control certainly didn't earn these perks any more than the workers. Second, the basic premise of socialism - the inevitable struggle of the working class against capitalist masters - is a false one. Capitalist countries thrive because capitalists long ago discovered that happy workers work better. Furthermore, exploitive capitalistic practices have been largely curbed by the development of trade unions, government protection of trade unions, and worker hour, wage and safety laws. Rape capitalism is a thing of the past in most developed countries. Hence, socialism’s raison d'etre has ceased to exist in those places. Third, because socialist systems work so inequally and asymmetrically, they have to be enforced by violence. You say, "Capitalism is a war-prone society with a built-in clash of interests . . . (etc.)" Well, so is socialism. Socialists states (including China, the U.S.S.R., Cuba and Cambodia - all building on socialism toward a better communist) killed more people in the last century than anyone else ever did in the same period of time. Lenin and Stalin exterminated more of their own countrymen than Hitler did. Mao killed more than 30 million people in his cultural revolutions. The truth is that all governments are nothing more than organizations of force. In that regard, Capitalist states have nothing to be proud of. Yet, Socialist states have less to be proud of as a result of their bloodiest of records. Fourth, your discussion of how socialism fits in here is entirely erroneous because control of oil plays no part in the struggle. Israel produces little oil (using ten times more than it produces), and Lebanon produces no oil. Nor does the conflict with Israel have anything to do with any of the genuine oil producing states. Therefore, your claim - "In the Middle East the conflict is over oil" - is simply false insofar as it relates to Israel and its enemies. Fifth, the fact that Israel is a nuclear power does not show up "the US hypocrisy over the spread of nuclear weapons" - as you claim. Israel never signed the NPT, and the U.S. did not provide Israel with nuclear technology. It was France that helped Israel build nuclear weapons. Go blame the French - a good socialist ally of yours. Sixth, you simply cannot distort the socialist paradigm to fit every picture. Socialism is based on the struggle between workers and owners of capital. Not every struggle is a “socialist” one. Thus, it is simply a false view to say that one side in the dispute in issue here is "the oppressor" and the other "the oppressed" within the socialist paradigm The lack of any economic nexus to the dispute makes the analogy a mockery of socialism (which, by the way, you are very good at). Seventh, and finally, it is plainly false to claim, as you have, that "Socialists are always spontaneously on the side of the oppressed against the oppressors . . . " As already noted, above, socialists are the bloodiest oppressors ever to have existed. They oppress their own people worst of all.
60. #45 - NOT Only 2.
John Wadsworth ,   San Jose, CA (USA)   (07.24.06)
No, the war is not being conducted just because 2 soldiers were kidnapped. Hizbollah guerillas crossed the border into Israel and murdered 7 Israeli soldiers at the same time they kidnapped the 2. Then they began showering Israel with rockets. They haven't stopped with the rockets yet. And they haven't stopped showering Israel with rockets because they are bent on Israel's destruction. Hizbollah's actions certainly constitute adequate provocation to war. Israel has the right to defend itself and to neutralize Hezbollah's ability to inflict any more damage. That is exactly what Israel is doing - although they haven't shown as much care as they should have in carrying out these legitimate objectives. Your suggestion that the UN somehow step in to enforce a cease fire would be laughable, were it not so tragic. The UN IS ALREADY IN SOUTHERN LEBANON. Their presence has been useless. They haven't stopped any fighting, they haven't tried to disarm Hizbollah, and they haven't tried to help the Lebanese government comply with UN resolution 1559 - which calls for the disarming of Hizbollah. Adding more UN forces will simply give Hizbollah more human shields behind which to hide when Israel comes after them. Finally, the fact that some Israelis condemn their own government for the war isn't surprising. Every country has their share of self-hating, guilty people. And if you haven't found any news of it on this site, I have two suggestions: 1) You haven't been looking very hard; and/ or 2) just wait, you'll see it.
