1. I support the IDF
Mark ,   New York   (07.31.06)
I support the moral IDF, perhaps the most moral army in the world, which drops leaflets for weeks telling civilians to flee, and then when civilians (actually terrorist supporters and Israel haters, since they let Hezbulloh hold weopons in their homes) are killed, the IDF suspends bombings even though it has video proof that rockets were fired from that area. Now if that's not a moral army I don't know what is.
2. Barnea is right!
Gb ,   Detroit USA   (07.31.06)
Olmert and Peretz should not listen to the commentators, starting with Barnea. I am real linear about the war- get to victory as fast as possible, lose as few troops and civilians as possible. But this war will go on until Iran and Syria are defanged in the region; this war is is as much theirs as Hezbollah and Hamas.
3. What's Barneas solution with the Katushas
N B Shalom   (07.31.06)
That are fired from the civilian population??? Should Israel take the casualties from the Katushas or should they be bombed even at the cost of civilians who live with the hizballah ???
4. open ur eyes!
C... Lebanon   (07.31.06)
to all lebanese people open ur eyes about what is going on israel is not killing people... its hezballah who's killing them... so stop watching ur local chanels and wake up! too bad every1 who's supporting hezballah is so damn blind and shallow. if u love them that much why dont u die instead of the innocent... in that way Lebanon will be a better place without the animals like U!!!!!!
5. a civilian population?
michael ,   seattle, wa   (07.31.06)
I am sad for Lebanon. Sad that they must live with choices they've made. Sad for the children who had no choice. The population of southern Lebanon is no longer a civilian population. When ideology drives hatred into even the youngest of heads, the entire population becomes a militia bent on the guidelines of that ideology - in this case, hatred of Israel and its people. If we could stop the world from teaching hatred perhaps we would have a chance. I support what Israel and the IDF is doing. They are removing a threat that has been taught to hate and destroy them. In the larger picture, it is a small effort, yet important for what it is. They have done everything possible to warn the population that their fury is coming. The real criminals here are those who teach hatred.
6. #5 then dont stop at lebanon
(08.01.06)
"When ideology drives hatered into even the youngest of heads, the entire population becomes a militia" Uh-huh. And all the Israeli jews hate arabs, even kid jews - so let's bobm them also, dear. Right? All militia populations have to go. The winner in this conflict is going to be Hizbollah. It was so dumb to think that you can take them out with your military. Sure. You woul have to kill all 30% shia population of Lebanon to do that. And you know, you are not going to be able to get away with something like this. So Hizbollah is still going to be around. Only now you gave a reason for the rest of the Lebanon to support them. Whom else they are going to support in this conflict? You thought they are going to support Israel? lol But you will blead from having to occupy Lebanon again, from having to pay $$$ for it, and of course from all the bad rap that you are going to get for hundreds of civilian casualties in Lebanon. Those dead kids pictues look pretty graphic even to your american allies...
7. Israeli Anti-Americanism
Alex ,   USA   (08.01.06)
It is unbelievable to me how many Americans believe that Israelis are pro-American despite the evidence of past history and the current evidence of this site. What American carpet-bombing of what capital in the Kosovo war? Pristina? Belgrade? In fact, that bombing was quite similar to what the Israelis are doing today in Lebanon: attacking infrastructure that supports military capacity and military targets. There was no carpet bombing of civilian targets. It makes no difference about truth: the Israelis so hate Americans that they will accept and repeat any lie about the US. No Israeli voice will be raised in defense of the US or to deny anti-American propaganda. ISRAEL IS NO ALLY. Why should any American care about what happens to a people so filled with hatred of America?
8. Inquiry commission that wasn't(Barnea Article)
Anthony ,   San Diego, USA   (08.01.06)
The radical's shouldn't be hiding amongst the "civilians". If there were radical groups with rockets in America pointed into Mexico, and we harbored these radicals or didn't try to stop them; I would completely understand if Mexico started bombing my house. I would be ashamed that I didn't try to stop the radicals. But if I didn't try to stop them, wouldn't that mean that I sympathize with them...?
9. Inquiry commission that wasn't
Rafi ,   Santa Cruz, CA USA   (08.01.06)
In his column, Nahum mentions that "we didn't blindly carpet bomb the enemy capital," as the US did in Kosovo. My question is this. On July 13, after the first salvo of rockets hit Israel, what if Israel had said "any town from which rockets are launched will be carpet bombed in 24 hours." And, if Hezbollah sent another salvo, Israel then carried out its threat. I don't think Israel would have been more condemned than it was for what happened in Qana. But, I have to believe that Hezbollah would have thought twice about sending another salvo. I'm not sure Israel did anyone a favor by trying to "surgically" respond to rocket fire. If a town allowed Hezbollah to use it as a launch pad, then it should suffer the consequences, unequivocally. Israel is already being accused of disproportionate response, so what would it have had to lose?
10. to 6 - quote Dan Gillerman
michael ,   seattle, wa   (08.01.06)
It seems he said it best, allowing that these children, as children have in the past, been spent to earn public opinion. It seems a logical strategy, one that sounds correect for the antagonist. Stlll sad though. I would never think of putting my children nor any children in harm's way. Yet I have not taught my children religious nor racial fanatical hatred either. And, as for "winners", there are none. We only lose from war. We gain memory that haunts us, deeply poisoning our future. I am sad for us all.
11. Alex; Arabs have murdered thousands of Americans.
Daisy ,   USA   (08.01.06)
The Jews haven't. Most Americans aren't fooled by your Arab propaganda. We support Israel because we know the difference between good and evil.
12. hezbollah's weapons not in lebanon
(08.01.06)
what's the point to destroy hezbollah's munitions in lebanon, when you very well know that they all come from iran? after destroying their arms cashes, you may have them scraping for weapons, but only until their new shipment comes in from iran.
13. #5 David
Patricia ,   santa barbara, ca,us   (08.01.06)
David, You can't be sad. Not if you think that way. How can you say those children are not civilians? Are you blind? Those people were too poor and too scared to travel in the roads that the IDFconstantly bombs. How can you say that and see the people who got killed? There were no weapons, soldiers or young man that could be terrorist. Only women and children. Too poor and too confident in that the IDF would spare them and they would have a chance to live. You are not sad, you are blind with hate. You are also wrong in another thing, you are the one teaching the world hatred. And we don't like it.
14. #7 What planet are you on?
Sharon ,   Haifa, Israel   (08.01.06)
15. Congratulations, Barnea
Ann ,   Canada   (08.01.06)
You have succeeded in fueling the criticism leveled at Israel. Your illogical arguments have been quoted by those who try to justify blaming Israel, even though doves like Shimon Peres lays the culpability where it belongs - at the feet of Hizbulla. Israel targets terrorists, Hizbulla targets civilians. Israel protects it's civilians, Hizbulla prevents theirs from taking cover.
16. Let Nachum Barnea clean his house first
Ilan ,   Ariel   (08.01.06)
Our media (particularly the state supported media) is a cesspool nepotism, waste of tax payers money, and vested interests. A good place for some soul searching if any. Start there. As for the army, one only has to think about what are the organizational deficiencies in the IDF after punishing professional people like previous chief of staff for not signing on to the political agenda of Sharon? Rather than say that Peretz and Olmert blindly followed the army, perhaps it is a case of an army where the "professionals" are forced to either cow to the worldview of the politicians or leave. And in that Barnea has his share of the blame.
17. You are right #7 Alex
Ghandi ,   saudi arabia   (08.01.06)
That was whatI have been saying over this website. Israel is an ally to the US, because they still benefit from the US goverment and the real Americans. Most US Jews' loyalties lie in Israel. They are only friends to whoever support Israel, and if you once critizise it, you are the enemy. I feel sorry for my friends in the US, who pay taxes and pay their kids' blood to support Israel. Again, Israel has been always the root of US trouble.
18. To # 11 and # 14
Alex ,   USA   (08.01.06)
Daisy, did I say one word against Jews or one word for Arabs? Please learn how to read before you criticize. Or perhaps you believe that the US carpet bombed Yugoslavia and are one of those Americans who hate America. Sharon, those who respond with invective rather than facts tend to convince others that the facts do not support the responder's argument. Perhaps if you had provided a bit of evidence in support of alleged American genocide in Yugoslavia instead of accusing me of living on another planet I might have a little respect for your opinion.
19. International forces in Shebaa Farms
Dave ,   NYC USA   (08.01.06)
The discussion of an international force to occupy southern Lebanon seems to be a band-aid that doesn't address the real issue at hand. One of Hezbollah's fundamental objections is that Israel continues to occupy the Shebaa Farms area. Despite the ongoing debate about whether Shebaa Farms actually belongs to Syria or to Lebanon, the presence of Israeli military in the region is repeatedly cited as an inflammatory factor to both parties in either case. Understanding the strategic importance of Shebaa Farms and the Golan Heights to Israel, it's clear that the Israeli military would never agree to withdraw and allow it's adversaries to regain control. However, if part of the contemplated cease fire solution involved a strengthened international presence in the south of Lebanon, Israel might be willing to cede control to such a force in the Shebaa Farms region as well. This force would clearly have to be potent enough to prevent the re-infiltration of Hezbollah or extremist factions. If an internationally controlled DMZ were set up, with appropriate measures in place so that no infiltration of Hezbollah would be tolerated, perhaps Israel would finally feel comfortable leaving the area. The question is, would this measure really appease Hezbollah to the point that it could live in peace as Israel's neighbor? An understanding of the sincerity of Hezbollah's intentions in this regard would be required before any such concession should be considered.
20. re # 19 International force
HBendor ,   New York USA   (08.02.06)
Hizballah is not a factor in the political equation and should not be even considered to be one to relate to. The price of war is the only factor for consideration here i.e. Alsace, Lorraine. The Sheba Farm area (originally belonging to Syria) should remain in Israeli hands as the price of war. Speaking of international force… Israel has its belly full of biased International forces UNIFIL et al. The future of Israel should be in its own hands… Even an American force would not be considered adequate as a buffer between the warring parties. There is no such a thing as appropriate internationally controlled DMZ… Israel should not be there to appease Hizballah but just the opposite to eradicate it/eliminate it wipe it off the face of the earth. The sheer presence of Hizballah with its allegiance to Iran and Syria is anathema to the present situation. It is either send it back to Syria and Iran or die in Lebanon! This is the solution. No other half measured solution adequate for the problem would pop afresh in the not distant future.
