She got caught.
32. #26 - for Jews the Middle Ages was a time of learning
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (08.07.06)
There were some great rabbinical descisions that helped women then. Things started to go downhill for women later.
33. haredim are ignorant self abusing idoits - what else is new?
Avi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.07.06)
There are a number of crimes against man and god (she continues to do a good job hiding herself) in this dreadful tale. The guilty ones are those who continue to support the total hegemony of the male Orthodox establishment in all of its corrupt manifestations in total power over the marital status of Jews in our country. More and more young couples are not marrying through the Rabbinate for reasons of ideology and personal disgust with the corrupt creeps who inhabit its portals. The socialized terror that Orthodox and especially haredi society imposes on its members is an open sore in our society. People will always be stupid and do stupid things, but there is no reason why the State of Israel should subsidise and support them in their stupidity. People will always be willing to listen to some guru or teacher who has a connection to god and all the right answers. It is human nature. We believe that everyone has the free will to choose their path. However, there is free will based on knowledge and experience and there is sect based brain washing. The activities of the "machzerim betsuva" are evil and contemptible, as well as physically and socially dangerous. They prey on children and young adults and give them answers which then ruin their lives and the lives of their families. They must be stopped or at least the state subsidies that they get must be slashed. We Jews have a rich culture which must be studied and also practiced. The torah has 70 faces, not one with a big black hat, long black coat and a beard.

It is such a shame that you apaprently live in the wrong chardei neighbourhood, this most deifnately happened, this is by no means a fantasy of ynet - infact i wish it were, i together with my parents and siblings have just got up from a very tragic shiva for M. Just to set the record straight it was on the radio news the hour it happened, you i hope would not have seen it on the tv news since you are charedi and should not own a tv, her road was blocked off for hours while her body lay there. Need i say more - sometimes just because YOU did not hear does not mean that this is not going around you. May YOU never know the pain we are all going through.
35. To #34 thank you for your message
AB ,   The Rock   (08.07.06)
And May HaShem comfort you all amongst all the mourners of Tzion. This story is indeed so tragic and only reflects the mixed up priorities that have seeped into the charedi communities. They have just lost direction. They need Mashiach as much as those who have forgotten they are Jewish. Perhaps we should start by naming the community instead of hushing it up. I'd for one would like to know.
36. Dying for divorce
caroline ,   manchester england   (08.07.06)
I read the heart breaking story of M, who killed herself because of an abusive husband. I think that the Rabbinical Court that, not only refused her a divorce, but sided with the vile monster she was married to are just as guilty of her death as if they has thrown her to her death. How dare men condemn a woman to a life of misery. The should be ashamed, and should never be allowed to hold any kind of power again
37. I agree with #36
cipher ,   Boston, Mass, USA   (08.07.06)
The men of the rabbinic court are guilty of murder, morally and (probably) halakhically. Their names should be revealed and they should be publicly vilified.
38. re: #29, INTERESTING - response from Canada
Marci ,   THORNHILL, CANADA   (08.07.06)
I was at that unfortunate shiva. I feel bad for others that may be suffering in your community, and don't have a friend to turn to that will believe them and help them. You and others in your community should be asking yourselves if you are being the best friend you can be to anyone you know. It would behoove your community to have a public forum on how to prevent a tragedy like this from happening, should a woman in your community be suffering like this. There must be a balance between privacy and speaking out against another (loshen hara) - if someone has a shameful situation, do you think they should just "take it" or should they be able to turn to a friend, family, rabeyim, professionals to help their suffering. Your professed denial that such a thing could happen is VERY NAIVE. There are people (men) who succumb to their YAYTSOR HORA (evil inclination) who look the part of being religious and G*d fearing, but are cheating themselves, their family, and their community, and those men will allow their often weak, submissive and helpless wives to suffer because of their evil controlling ways. Naomi Ragen wrote a play "MINYAN" about this very topic in the Chareidi community and went public with it to try to illicite some kind of change. OPEN YOUR EYES AND YOUR HEARTS!!!!!
39. Jewish women, we can change the system!
Judith ,   Los Angeles   (08.07.06)
To the family of M., may the Omnipresent comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. To all of us women from every walk of Jewish life: unite! a) Form a professional counselling service for battered women b) make a shelter for battered women and children c) Place business cards of the shelter and hotline to the counselling service in the mikvahs around the town (also in supermarkets, clothing stores etc.) d) Have the counselling service educate the Rabbis about the problem of abused women, it is a widespread problem in ALL society. This is what Rebbetzen Weinberg started in Baltimore and what we do in LA. Don't just vent your anger at the chareidi world in general and Rabbis in particular, do something constructive! Btw, I am married to an orthodox Rabbi who has helped women get a divorce, a black hat does not signify misogyny.

42. Real Reporter would interview Rabbis!!
mike   (08.08.06)
Instead of a provocative story, there should be an informed and serious discussion. This is a very very serious issue of human rights and instead of taking it seriously we read----- More Junk

As I said, charity boxes to pay for the shelter that is serving Haredi women are in stores in many secular neighborhoods. I went to a fundraising event, organized and attended by secular women to support this shelter. You won't see any such charity boxes in Haredi neighborhoods, where they prefer to play Chosen of the Chosen and claim that violence against women and children happens only among secular people.
44. This is heartbreaking
Barbara ,   New York, USA   (08.08.06)
I am in a marriage my estranged won't let me out of. But I don't have a rabbinical court treating me like a child and validating my abuser. I hope everyone on the court & the husband are taken to task for this. Oh wait, that husband will just say this proves she was crazy. GGGRRRRRRRR
45. The Awareness Center
Lois ,   Bellmore, USA   (08.10.06)
Clergy need more education in Domestic Violence - even the NON-physical sort of mental & verbal abuse poor M. put up with. http://www.awarenesscenter.org and www.jwi.org are two good places to start finding out how we can make this happen.
