31. A rabbi and a soldier walk into a bar
David   (08.15.06)
And the rabbi should shut up because those who have never paid the price of war should not be the leading advocates of it. Unless you want your wars to go as well as America's are right now, unfortunately.
32. war leaders
moe ,   montreal, Canada   (08.15.06)
great, so it is a war between Rabbais and Chicks? you know, there is no democracy whatsoever if you leave your fate to religious people to lead you, after they finish the war against their enemy, they turn and fight their own people who are not religious or don't approve their method. those people think g-d is behind them, that's why they are dangerous.
33. World War
Robert ,   USA   (08.15.06)
I agree with Rabbi Bin-Nun 100%, except that this war did not begin on 9/11, it began with the assasination fo Rabbi Mier Kahne, Z"L.
34. #3 and #7
Stefan ,   NYC   (08.15.06)
#3 Just another detached fool. Never served a day in an army, never did anything but cling to a teet, no basis of reality. LA. Typical. #7 Wow. So you want war. Nice. Maybe next time Israel won't be so civilized in it's prosecution of the war.
35. Wonderful
Abraham Bohadana ,   Nancy, France   (08.15.06)
Great article. Our soldiers are heroes. Hizbullah won the war only on CNN. Rabbi Yoel should replace Amir Peretz.
36. #7 enlightened lebanese
HilaryC ,   Israel   (08.15.06)
a small reminder:Jehad has been around much longer than the state of israel. So has the Muslim inherent intolerance of the infidel.say it as it is,you hate jews, period.

I'm a LEFT-WING Israeli and agree with every word
38. Will stop whining
Yehonatan ,   israel   (08.15.06)
Great idea. We'll fire the generals and let Eli Ishai, Menahem Mendel Schneerson, The Belzer Rebbe, The Satmer Rebbe, Ovadia Yosef and the Baba Sali run things. We'll get all our recruits from Benai Berak and Mea Shearim.
39. to # 38
Yossel ben Yehuda ,   Toronto   (08.15.06)
As much as I may dislike some of those Rabbanim you mention, were it for people like you we'd never have a state nor an army and G-d would have wiped us off the map long ago. For it is G-d who is the Master of all wars and laughs when man plans. I'd rather have the Satmar Rebbe (who is long dead) running the war who at least feared G-d and knew what to do than some politically correct stoned out left wing bum who thinks peace will fall into his lap and can shed his Jewish skin to make the whole world love and accept him. Nothing is worse for Israel than self hating liberal Jews who are the real cause of this and every other defeat.
40. A failed attempt to make us see the big picture!
Joseph ,   New York   (08.15.06)
When I read your arcitle, I felt sick. I felt sick because I realized that this war will go on for a long time and many people will die in the name of God or Allah. I hope that I am wrong. I hope that the well-intentioned will prevail and sideline radicalism. Let's stop pointing the fingers at the other camp. Each camp has more of its own share of fascist heads. We need moderate people to stand up and teach tolerance. Enough of this nonsense.
41. Times of London thinks Israel also won

43. Read Glick, not Bin-Nun
sk ,   USA   (08.16.06)
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1154525859901&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull This rabbi doesn't bother with Torah (not that those who do are very competent at it [just consider Ovadiah Yossef]). What is amazing, though, is how bad he is in non-Torah-related matters. Notice how he assumes that Sadat is to be taken at his word, rather than to be treated as a politico whose words are meant for political consumption. This fellow seems to believe that if Israelis pretend nothing bad happened, then, presto!, nothing bad happened. We should just shut up. BTW, I love how our prissy rabbi doesn't want to mention Nassrallah because of the letters "allah" buried in the name. Is he grooming himself for some new job? The rabbinate is in bed with Kadima (Shas most obviously). Bin-Nun's utterances are as likely to be honest as, oh, Sadat's.
44. Another Glick article - hot off the press

45. Selective use of words
Stan   (08.16.06)
Rabbi, Here is what you said. "I refuse to pronounce his name because it contains the word "Allah" Well, you just pronounced the word "Allah". I'm sure there will be some religous rationalization. Not that it matters, I just think it is kind of funny. You did make some good points especially on the global aspect of this war. Stan
46. Stop your demented preaching
Asylum Aleikum   (08.16.06)
"We must stop dreaming that we can fight underground bunkers by destroying the houses above them. .... But they cannot penetrate bunkers and tunnels." Ever heard of bunker-busting bombs, you demented blowhard? They have been around since WWII.
47. re: stop whining
Tova ,   New York   (08.16.06)
I agree with article. It's the naysayers, instant surveyors, and dissectors who throw their two cents in without having absorbed the whole situation that present a distorted picture. Israel did not lose the war; Truth be told; It did not even get to finish it. However, the Islamic world always cries victory, grandstands and has a terror march in the streets. It's all for TV. Up close &personal with immediate analysis of a situation that hasn't even been resolved. The victory is the media's; in getting more ratings and pontificating on events they don't understand or grasp. Be patient, my friends, and the truth will come out but who will be there to cover it when there is a competing ratings story? also, how has the media changed public perception, effected diplomacy/ policy decisions, and influenced the outcome. Like ceasar at the gladiator games; is it a thumbs up or a thumbs down for us? We must become more media savvy for public opinion and opinion polls seem to run and direct modern world policies.
48. To Joseph (comment #40)
Mustapha ,   Tripoli, Lebanon   (08.16.06)
Hey Joe - I could not have said it better myself. I wish more moderates would make their voices be heard. And let me say, your enemy is MY enemy too: radicals on both sides of this conflict. God speed my friend, and may peace prevail.

50. BiBi needs to come in NOW !!
Robert ,   Houston,Texas   (08.16.06)
Rabbi while I am sympathetic to your thesis, the fact is that the current government of Israel is clearly incompetent and unable to discharge its duties. I am greatly concerned that Iran will cause the war to start anew and do not want to see Olmert and his gang of idiots (including Halutz) running that war.
51. kvetching and democracy
Sigfried S. Kuhn ,   Aberdeen   (08.16.06)
This learned Rabbi should have studied some history, political science, and psychology before he wrote this article. First, Israel is a vibrant democracy and people must have the right to express their own opinions even if the Rabbi doesn't like them. Kvetching about having lost the war is not wrong because Israel could have accomplished a lot more within the month of fighting if the military leadership and Olmert's govt. understood the consequences of allowing Hezbollah to launch thousands of rockets, day after day at Israeli towns and cities while Israeli troops were prevented from dealing with these monsters. Second, the govt. apparently launched the war without any concern for the Israelis living in the North. Nothing was done for them. Third, reconstruction of Lebanon by the World community is part of the agreement while Israel is not even mentioned. Fourth, by failing to inflict a crushing blow to Hezbollah, Olmert and his cronies have emboldened Assad of Syria and other Arab States into thinking that they would be successful in a war against Israel. Rabbi, we still do not have the captured Israeli soldiers, and Hezbollah is not going to disarm and we are going to have Muslim troops as part of the UN force that has never prevented terror against Israel. Do you really think that complaining about a clueless govt. is really kvetching?
52. allah
aline ,   kfar saba   (08.16.06)
Who cares what the sheik's name is. At one time I would have said that the Moslems believe in the same G-d as we do. Not anymore. When my son recently asked if they believe in our G-d, I paused a moment to think and then I said, "No, our G-d tells us not to murder."
53. PROMOTE THIS RABBI TO GENERAL STAFF !!!!
Victor ,   Zurich, Switzerland   (08.16.06)
If Israel had only 10% of its generals like this rabbi, the outcome would be different. PROMOTE THE GUY ALL THE WAY UP!!!
54. Stop your whinning.
Taylor ,   Vancouver, BC   (08.16.06)
Fantastic analysis. Yes Israel is a democracy, and lesson's need to be learned from this conflict, but Israel is at war and needs to keep the mindset "United We Stand". It needs to be remembered that no war goes as planned, yet this conflict proved: - Hezbollah’s rockets, though a major inconvenience, actually are a minimal deterrent (with less than 100 Israeli's killed from 4000 rockets launched). - Hezbollah’s weaponry, tactical abilities and level of support from Syrian-Iran were revealed, BEFORE they were fully developed. - International pressure on Hezbollah to disarm is at an historic high. - The governments of US, UK Canada and Australia, among others now support Israel's right to defend itself. - For the first time, the President of the USA (and the vast majority of American's) has publicly identified Israel as an ally in the War on Terror. - Israel proved that though it withdraws from territory, it also returns with a vengeance if attacked. - Score's of Hezbollah’s terrorists have been dispatched to the great Abyss, where they can no longer murder innocent citizen's.

he mixed good advices /with the bitter tast of failing one fact i know in this war that hizballah members are lebanees the aim and doing in this war to define lebanon lands and people even that they are moslems .the aim of the moslem must be define his house and family even the weapons is iranian or from any other country moslem or not ..do you think if america wnt t give weopons tohizballa or israil want that they will refuse the weopones ,,may be they refuse becouse they do not trust them as people but not becouse they are not moslems ..and if the israili soldiers want to destroy the lebanees or hizballa or hamass or any other people becouse they are moslems sure they will fail .the most false propoganda is the war against islam the war must be against people not religion or thoughts or theories becouse the wrong thoughts or theories will fall alone becouse it is wrong ...forbid me the thought of all the land of israil was fall not becouse of the islam or the arab but becouse it is wrong not logic and there was arab in this land or there is people with other toughtsand religion .and the theor of the new middle east will fall becouse you treate people not land only ..people like me and you and presedent bush and my friend condi ..i think she has a heart like me and i have a brain like her ..but she do her job but i have no job to do ,,and if i have i can not do only my brain and heart even i will lost the job ..yes on this earth even the spoild earth there will be some do what they are ,not what the other want them to be or what the job tell them
56. Tit for tat!
Jesus ,   SF, USA   (08.16.06)
now the mice come out of their "let's give peace a chance" holes. But then again... that's what happens when you've got freedom...you can say whatever whenever...even during war time. I believe it's just plain stupid to go against your government when they're at war...your men and women are out there fighting for your lives...yes YOUR lives...it's disgusting and sad that there were people that did not support their soldiers...just as it is over here in the good ol' US of A. Though one might not support the war...don't make that public...it's very demoralizing to your men and women out there fighting for YOUR freedom to live. Next time..think about that before you go out there to protest... ::here's where you can protest what I'm writing about:: Maybe next time...those that are protesting should be sent out to the areas where the Katusha rockets were falling...see how long their rallies would last... ^ ^ Maybe next time...when the ones that were protesting get notified that their loved ones got obliterated to pieces by a Katusha rocket, they'll think twice about not supporting those men and women fighting for their right to protest. So..once again...I ask...support your soldiers...their the ones fighting for your right to live. Protest aftwards. :) Oh...by the way, now's a good time to help your fellow neighbors that are in need...no matter what nationality they are...I wish you all the best!
57. The world is waiting for US or Israel to
John ,   NZ   (08.16.06)
destroy Iran's nuke. Iran meanwhile has Russia, China, N.Korea and time on its side. Israel doesn't have the time nor luxury to find out whether Iran is going to nuke them or not. Time is a dangerous game to play.

Aline, there can only be one god. One Creator from whom
59. to 52 - Allah
Hassan ,   Lebanon   (08.16.06)
Aline, there can only be one God. ONe creator from whom all is. God tells all not to murder, it is in his commandments. Now pause for a second and look at what your movemement (Zionism) , probably not you personally, has done. Millions displaced over the years, hundreds of thousands killed. Can you imagine for one second the suffering caused by the entity you belong to, whether knowingly or not. Muslims have never been jewish haters. Never. The anti israeli movements are the very creation of Israel's doing. Did hezbollah exist before all the violence the irsraeli army had caused in Lebanon? Did Hamas exist prior to Israeli confiscation of Palestinian land? No one can morally support the killing of innocents on either side, but who has initially created sides? Jews always enjoyed a peaceful living amongst us for hundres of years. why should Arabs pay for the suffering that Europeans caused you? In 60 years of history, Israel never made ONE peaceful gesture towards its neighbors. You reap what you sow. How can you hope for peace, when you don't even consider justice? Peace is not a word. It is a behavior!!
60. Hassan, 1929 Hebron Massacre due to '67 Occupation?
Bozoer Rebbe ,   Motown, USA   (08.16.06)
Hassan, the major difference between the status of Jews in the Muslim and Christian worlds was that we were more likely to be killed in Europe. However, as dhimmis, we Jews suffered routine oppression and there were indeed episodes of murderous violence, like the blood libels in Damascus in the mid 19th century. Why do you think the Sephardim in Israel loved Begin so much? They know what it was like being a Jew under Muslim rule. Read some history, not Arab mythology. In 1929, 69 mostly eldery, non-Zionist, religious Jews were slaughtered in Hebron. Were the Arabs of 1929 aggrieved over the occupation too?
