While there were episodes of peace and opportunity for the Jews at various times in different Muslim communities, there were also very clear restrictions such as forcing the Jews to wear identifying clothing, restricting the size and numbers of synagogues, holding public offices, forbidding Jews to ride on horses and camels, (the only means of transport and commerce) etc. People often make the mistake of glorifying Jewish life under Muslim rule especially in comparison to the terrible conditions imposed on the Jews in Medieval Europe.
