i was 23 when i made aliya with degree in social work from UWM. Prior to aliya i visited every chance i had and participated in various programs so my heb was minimal but i had an idea of structure of language but most of all: I HAD DETERMINATION LIKE A CRAZY PERSON-meaning: i did ulpan for 5months and immediatly after WENT INTO A FIGHTING UNIT:):)oh ye--i should state:I M A GIRL:) i became an officer(im now a captain) and none of my service had to do with my schooling degree-that was my choice cause i had so much more to give to the army than just what i learned. So dear man-if u want to make aliya-stop worring about it and be like Nike:JUST DO IT:)yo degree is valid,yo driver lisence is valid, and everything else is valid--but whats gona make it happen for u is not paper validation but yo stubborn determination to make it here and never even to intartain the thought of moving back-i've been here 15y-7of which in the army--and trust me-blind love for Isr.and hard work will keep me here for ever:)!

What would you do Mo if some guys came to your door and pointed guns at you and tried to kill you? Fight back of course. If peoplen thought like you we Jews in Israel would all be dead now.

There is what it's called the "NAHAL HAHARIDI", it is made up of religious soldiers who learned in Yeshivas. There are more and more of them these days and they good fighters too. One was shot this Friday at the checkpoint by a palestinian terrorist.

The hizbollah was a lesson, and besides that wasn't a conventional war since people had to fight in people's homes and yards. The hizbollah decided to sacrifice their own populace for this cause and our soldiers died trying to avoid killing them. We could've carpet bombed the whole area, and boom, Israel won the war. One more thing, since IDF took over Southern Lebanon and could run it and they're still there ,I'd say that we won.

I loved this story. I have known old men who went to fight in other countrys for the right of it. Totally volunteer. God Bless these brave young men and women and may he bring more to fight for Israel!

Hopefully you will remain healthy and strong, but if that should change and you see what the jobnick worl is like, i would like to know what you think then. On my base one person could have done the job of four! I made aliya at 22 from Chicago and have no regrets. Everything is valid. Ulpan is great - your Hebrew will be fine in 3 months. Think hard, plan ahead, look around, and ask questions. I respectfully disagree with Sveta (though I suspect we are acquianted) - don't just do it. Do it smartly, and expect a culture shock. Then you won't be disappointed. Everyone takes a different route to get here, in the metaphysical sense. And not everyone is always happy with the results (most are), but I don't think anyone (even those who came back) ever regreted having given it a try. Good luck!
