"metal storm"
3.  Peretz gets it, finally
patriot ,   chicago,us   (08.24.06)
What a moron, he just now gets that a missile defense system is needed!
4. What about technical and economical viability?
Flavio ,   Sao Paulo, Brazil   (08.24.06)
From some material previously read, I understand that the laser cannon approach (Nautilus) has suffers from some technical issues and also that its development costs would be too much high, deeming th project impractical. Is it really possible to overcome these obstacles? What about the phalanx solution? Phalanx is a multibarreled fast cannon used by US and Israeli navies, providing saturation fire against low-speed approaching rockets and missiles. It is a reality, proven and successful. Would not it be possible to adapt it into an effective anti-Katyusha weapon?

Mike Rice ,   USA   (08.24.06)
What land is that? Is it the land that was in the year 10bc until the Israelis RETURNED from the countries they were exiled in? I bet if Israel wasn't there it would still be in 10bc just like all the nations surrounding Israel...
6. "Develop anti-rocket system"
Michael Steiner   (08.24.06)
Well,. DUH!!!
7. Stop wasting milions of shekels in
Keren ,   Sao Paulo   (08.24.06)
uprooting Jewish Israelis from their houses and their lands in charge for terrorism;stop handing over lands for which lives and money were lost and invested;stop inflating the publib service with friends and cronies;stop dumping money in inutile things ,and invest in Israel's high priority :security-and education,of course! It is a simple absurd say that such importants plans were stoped due to high cost. It is imbelievable! Israeli army should be always extremely modern, sophisticated and ready, and the soldiers extremely well cared! This is my opinion yet from here .
8. Give him chance. Let experience speaks.

9. Lasers are best but also
Sam Weinstein ,   USA   (08.24.06)
I saw on TV the other night a show called future weapons. There is a techniology called metal storm. Looked like a interesting technology for this job.
10. Need Anti-missile system and
George ,   Atlanta , GA   (08.24.06)
Peretz to resign. In reverse order, actually.
11. Only Rockets?
Yedidia ,   Atlanta   (08.24.06)
I sit here with bunch of other scientists and we conclude that given the ability of Mr Peretz to "order" he should also order the army to expand the system capabilities to shoot down any ani tank missile and why not every bullet, think how many lives can such a magic system save
12. why always rectifiy a problem when it is already too late?

they are already working on new weapons for your tanks, and who knows, mayb for the warships and f16?!! learn a lesson from the past. they are always few steps ahead.
15. Learn from Last; Prepare for Next
Michael ,   Minneapolis USA   (08.24.06)
The enemies of Israel are not static. It must deploy anti-missile systems (sure, Metal Storm is one option) and have sufficient intelligence to track and anticipate the enemy's future tactics. Given the insidious nature of the Hezbos in Lebanon, the next conflict should include a strategy to annex the country and then give parcels back to the Lebanese once pacified. No more half-measures for Lebanon.
16. Also Try WW II Barrage Balloons
Gary ,   Belmont,CA,USA   (08.24.06)
As a low-tech, lower cost adjunct, investigate the applicability of an updated version of WW II Barrage Balloons. Would it be possible to suspend synthetic netting below an aray of such balloons, to interfere with the trajectories of light-weight rockets? There are only a limited number of origins and targets for these rockets, and they are recorded. Start with a trial to stop the Kassams fron Gaza, as the rockets are smaller, and are targeted on only a few major points (sderot & Asdod). Barrage ballons were used throughout WW II up to 10,000 feet altitude, to interfere with low- flying aircraft.
17. #1 reply to A-Hole
Christopher ,   Austin, Texas   (08.24.06)
Dear A- Hole in Ramallah. Yes I think you are right, the occupied land needs to given back. When Israel was renamed Palestine by the roman invaders, the only people living in the new 'Palestine' were Jews. So they were the 'Palestinians'. So dear A-Hole, you Amelakite, quit occupying 'Palestine' and leave. GET OUT and leave 'Palestines' to its rightful owners, the Jews.
18. cost of anti-rocket system
Jeff ,   Philadelphia, USA   (08.24.06)
How much will such a system cost to develop, vs. how much will it cost to rebuild, and to face increased chances of more attacks? It's more cost effective to develop the system than to allow terrorists to demolish cities and kill people, then rebuilding the cities until the next attack. IF an anti-rocket system was in place, shooting down 4000 rockets, it would have been great!!!
19. YESSIR! RIGHT AWAY SIR! BUT HOW SIR????
stude ham ,   outremont, canada   (08.24.06)
Peretz can order all he wants... he's an idiot who doesn't know what's involved here... just as he didn't know the implications of his unbelievably incompetent military decisions during round 1. Sack this guy before huge sums of moneys, that must be used to better equip the IDF, vanish into a giant research and development black hole!
20. To 4
Da dude   (08.24.06)
Actually there's already been huge jumps in the technology. Israel and the US have developed systems that work. The main economic issue is that the system is currently based on putting an electric pulse through a chemical mixture. This creates higher cost, but now the US is developing a Solid state that basically can work as a machine gun. The Phalanx system doesn't work because these rockets are just to high in the sky and too fast. WHen a rocket is incoming to a ship it's usually flying at a fairly flat angle directly at the ship making that system workable. Also the main point of the system isn't in essence to get 100% stopping power. While that sounds like idiocy, please read on and let me explain. The point of this system at first when it is setup is to make it so that Hizb'allah would have to launch more missiles to get the same affect as before. Imagine that every 10 rockets/missiles fired only 1 gets through. Now to launch something like a 100 missiles a day into Israel, hizb'allah would then need to launch 1000 missiles, and they would have to launch them at the same time to overload the system. The current way that Hizb'allah launched would make it completely nuetralized. Now think about that, hizb'allah would have to use atleast 10% of it's arsenal in one to get the same affect as before. Theres no way they can do that. They would expose themselves, and even for oil rich country like Iran, you just simply can't keep supplying that amount of weaponry. It's also the fact of psycological warfare, imagine just shooting down the majority. Their entire system goes to hell.
21. Another point to those complaining about cost
Da dude   (08.24.06)
How much did this war cost? In property damage? Equipment depleted? Extra working hours? The economic slow down of no work? In deterence? LIVES?!?!?!?! The amount that this war cost could have easily paid for the development of the system. Also remember the system gets cheaper the more it's used and the more you build. In the end of the day this system will radically shift the way war is fought. Imagine literally Hizb'allah shooting rockets to no affect. They are launching 200-300 rockets and missiles a day and not one hits. Imagine the shock, and how powerless Nasrallah becomes. What can he do? Invade? Ask syria to join in? Whine? Literally the next war can easily be fought from the air and can be fought in attrition manner because theres nothing they can do to us. We can fly planes and they can't do anything. Even if they stay underground, let them. Let Lebanon become hell, and let them become the ultimate set of losers.
22. How about building rockets and missiles
jason white ,   afula,israel   (08.24.06)
with ball bearings inside that can hit civilian targets. Whatever happened to the rocket that the I.D.F. engineering unit under Brig.General David Laskov used to kill the egyptian chief of staff in his underground bunker in the seventie? Why not build cluster bombs,block-buster,fuel-air concussionbombs and napalm. Destroy their villages and the underground bunkers, before troops go in.
23. #14 Moe(hammed) in Canada ridiculous opinion LOL!!
(08.24.06)
I think you are entirely misinformed. Hezbollah does not "work on" weapons. They only BUY them from Syria and Iran (probably via the Russians.) Israel buys from the latest American technology, and from what I understand concerning the above article, is developing its own advanced technologies. I didn't see the Hezbollah entity flatten any Israeli villages, unlike what happened to villages in Lebanon. Get a grip on reality and stop gloating over your pretend Arabic "victory." LOL!!!
24. #20 DaDude: thanx for your comprehensive & clarifying answer

25. Re: ANTI-missile SYSTEM
gaby ,   Boston, usa   (08.25.06)
the new anti rokets called "PEACE SALAM, SHALOM",NO MORE WARS. Just give up on hateful Islamonazi ideology. Stop dreaming of umma in the whole world. Teach children peace and not Islamonazi supremacy. Stop dreaming of killing all the infidels.
26. PERFECT SOLUTION
vit ,   usa   (08.25.06)
It seems to me there can only be one solution. Israel has to be completely FREE OF ALL MUSLIMS (I mean no Muslims at all) and on the other hand all the Muslim Nations can be 100% Muslim. The Muslims can choose which of the 24 Muslim Nations they want to live in and the Muslims Nations can have all the Jews go to Israel. I mean, what's wrong with that? That way there would be one small, productive, 100% JEWISH ISRAEL and there would also be 24, large , 100% MUSLIM ONLY NATIONS. Why would that be so wrong? I mean both sides can visit the other if they wish! They just can't live there! Seems simple enough to me? WHY ARE MUSLIMS SO GREEDY???
27. shoot down the 3 stooges' bullshiite!
Arie ,   Afula   (08.25.06)
28. number 4
miki ,   haifa   (08.25.06)
The Phalanx system has a range which is too small to be used for this problem. It can defend only a point and not a large system. The Barak system is designd for just that mission. Defense of a large surface, and it is used in the israeli navy and other navies arround the world

it's so easy to make poetry when you don't have anything to say, and it's also easy to talk abbout a subject when you don't know it. read my response to number 4
30. #14 A few steps ahead?
Robert ,   San Diego, USA   (08.25.06)
Hezbollah blindly fires rockets at innocent civilians, and that makes them a few steps ahead? Any idiot can dream up ways to terrorize innocent, unsuspecting people. If that makes them a few steps ahead, I'll gladly remain a few steps behind.
