65. Ray, Ray, Ray.....................................
NS ,   Long Island, NY   (09.17.06)
Three things Ray; a) Everybody who walks into a Border's or a Barnes and Noble has the urge to hide books or magazines they don't like. Mine is the urge to leave all the copies of Tikkun and the Nation Magazines in the bathroom. Yet I fight that urge because that is censorship. There is no difference from what you are doing and a Nazi book burner. b) You put Alan Dershowitz alongside some of the most radical right wing demogogues? Is it because if he ever debated you he would verbally kick your ass? Alan Dershowitz is a liberal Democrat and a progressive Zionist and proud of it. c) I find it slightly racist that the only Jewish publication you like is Heeb because it is funny. No serious Jewish publication would be considered especially if they disagree with you. It is like you saying "Hey Jewboy, do that funny thing you do, do that cute thing you do." That is like telling an African-American, "Hey darkie, do that tap dancing thing you do" or "sing that darkie song" . It is racist and anti-Semitic and I don't give a damn who you are married to. Think about it Ray before your fingers fly across your computer.
66. More like Borring-orrist
Adam Jones ,   USA   (09.17.06)
This article is boring. I don't care what you do in bookstores or whether or not you think Ann Coulter is hot. Who do you think you are that you think your personal annoying quirks are worth reading? Why do you decry one's writing without qualifying such an attitude? The hatred you display is immature and childish. If you were a politician, you would probably help the Clintons ban anti-clinton movies rather than embrace free speech. (Bush hasn't tried to ban any movies.)
67. HEY RAY - IS THERE AN ARAB "HEEB" MAGAZINE ?

68. First and only charitable thing I'll say about Ray.
sk ,   USA   (09.18.06)
The censors seem to print anything that Talkbackers have to say about Ray and his work. This is great. Alas, he doesn't have the connections of Attila Somfalvi, whose work one cannot comment negatively about and get into print. So, I am very slightly sympathetic to Ray's plight. Alas, he causes it himself.
69. Comment on Sussman, and others
Ray Hanania ,   Chicago, IL USA   (09.18.06)
Jerry may be the only person besides Arja and Sara who recognize the column is an attempt at satire and little more ... the fact is people do that in book stores and as the writer I assume the cult to convey it ... have I done, it, yes. But the statistics show that I am among the majority not a minority and I doubt that the kind of criticism here -- real dripping venom and hate that drives the conflict -- are exactly the kind of people who hide books ... let's face it, "Stewart" won't even read this column yet he is consumed with attacking me personally -- never on facts, I might point out :) So yes, Jerry,. we don't have to agree about the facts in the Middle East. But it seems you at least agree that the solution requires us to read and understand each other and respond intelligently about the issues, not about the person. Thanks for writing and I appreciate your comments. And Sara and Arja, you two are the epitomy of courage to wander into this cesspool of hatred and ugliness and repetive namecalling ... 75. Ok, Ray
Stewart ,   USA   (09.18.06)
I've never really commented on your column when I read them. Go back and take a look. I clearly stated the opinions and ideas of a number of Arab and non Jewish Mideastern friends who had left the Mideast and now are here. Take a good look at what caused you to rant and rave "hater" and "extremist" about me, AND to begin to refer to me as "Stew*rat*". Now any real adult would not be upset by this. Would a real adult allow himself to be upset . . . to name calling . . . by another person? If I remember correctly, my issues turned very quickly from what I addressed to facts or issues others addressed, and how they were responded to. Your columns "may" be a good laugh, but are all the responses in "Talkbacks" just one big joke also? Hey, your columns are "satire and nothing more," as you said? Ok, so you blow of some of the more thoughtfull responders with "haters", "extremists" third grade humor name calling. YOU BET (YOU) THINK you are going to think you are being "attacked personally." Some of us expect better use of this priviledged e-zines space. Maybe a more WITTY but thoughtfull response that addresses the more thoughtful responses. That's what I'm used to from the professionals I read in the newsprint or listen to on the radio. From the looks of it, I'm one of the few people that do not attack you personally in these talkbacks. I've focussed on your actions (words) and later what I believed other adults could assume about the writer. Some of us Ray, just expect better. Oh, when you are dealing with Jews, it may be fair to say most of us do. We can be some of the most outspoken and critical people in the world (venting hot heads excluded). The sarcasm of your column may be way up there. All I have to compare it to is Mike Royko (Pulitzer) and others. But even Royko changed from sarcasm to wit when addressing or discussing with his more thoughtfull respondents. If you shoot off at the hip "hater", "extremist", "(name)-rat" to some of the more rational responses, maybe you really need to reread them. Maybe something in them hit too close to home. As I said, regardless of how good the column might be. Responses to certain talkbacks show no understanding and no change in style that these talkbacks beg. Go back an read old letters to Royko particularly the few that weren't from venters and loonies.
76. best teachers - fox or masada (#33) or Barney
Arja ,   Canada   (09.18.06)
For fans of Ann Coulter, Fox is indeed their teacher. Fox TV "news" is definitely NOT the best for getting unbiased coverage of the Middle East. Steve in #33 mentioned Masada2000.org. How does this website teach us? Almost 8000 Jews are placed on their hit list of "dangerous minds," like Tanya Reinhart, Amira Hass, Uri Avnery, Rabbi Lerner, those who are critical of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians and the occupation. The attempt is to suppress and belittle their ideas because they don't agree with Masada's Zionist perspective so Masada calls them 'self-hating" Jews or "Israel-Threatening Jews." Masada and Coulter are on par - blast those who don't agree with them as not being worthy of consideration, don't engage with them in any serious intelligent dialogue, just call them names and shout louder and tell them to shut up. I vote Barney the Dinosaur as the best teacher mentioned so far!
77. 65 - Or, like saying, "Hey..arab, pretend you're a pali."
NO BOWING TO MAN ,   4 AMERICANO WOMEN!   (09.18.06)
pump your fists in the air, start yawing your big savage mouth, shouting, DEATH! TO [FILL IN THE BLANK] Now go home to your hovel filled with rockets, rifles and arms, and no food... Guffaww ha ha Git it? "Hey arab, pretend you're a pali." Yaw ha ha ha
78. Arja right on target
sarah ,   ramallah   (09.18.06)
Thanks Arja. I'm sure almost all of these talkbackers couldn't even get their brain around the truth of what you wrote. All they do, as you say, is shout louder avoiding the truth and root causes. Or, make up things and skew reality in order to justify their rants. I noticed that one person responding to what I posted probably didn't even read the last line I wrote and went on a rant that Palestinians are the bad guys... so blind and deaf they become when any Palestinian makes sense in a reasonable manner. It hurts their quest for labeling all Palestinians as unable to embrace peace, when it is they themselves that are the obstacle.
79. Ray is just as bad as Ann Coulter
Edan ,   Israel   (09.18.06)
Both propagandists who try and use humor to get their twisted messages through. Both make people cry instead of laugh. Ann- " The liberals and the muslims are to blame for everything" Ray- " The republicans and Israel are to blame for everything".... yeah whatever, same same...
80. Hanania Typifies The Sick, Self Hating Jewish Leftist
Chaim   (09.19.06)
Hanania is another Woody Allen. A man whose "humour" is fuelled largely by self hatred and loathing. A man totally devoid of self respect who gets his kicks by kissing the boots of Jew haters. In short, a typical sick self hating Jewish leftist. A man who vilifies conservatives, who mainly are true friends of Jews and Israel. I find it difficult not to puke when I read such writing.

82. contrary to our modern web,

this system can't deceive, and when a question can be asked (almost never) the answer can be sweet. Anyone can invent propaganda, it takes a real man to post it for all the world to see. You the MAN RAY.
83. modern web of love and fear
Arja ,   Canada   (09.19.06)
Ann Coulter might have it right with her title "Godless." I see our so-called "modern, civilized" world as godless, in its loss of a sense of divine, of spirit and soul. I don't think much spirit or soul is found in fundamentalist religions. There's a lot of dogma and rules and lots of fear, punishment. Yesterday I found some bumperstickers that express the detachment of fundamentalist religion from the spirit and soul of the messages in the holy books: Would Jesus torture? Who would Jesus bomb? Is it not fear that underlies that need to protect ourselves, our own family, friends, country? fear of terrorist attack, annihilation, loss of our lifestyle? Personally, I prefer not to use the word "hate" about other people because I perceive their hateful words and actions as an expression of fear. I prefer to TRY to refuse to be an enemy, to stay away from polarization because it's so much harder then to find a middle ground where we can all meet. I watched a video online from Givat Haviva about a peace project in Israel where Israelis and Palestinian youth were brought together and discovered that they weren't that different, in fact, they were really a lot alike. We are all human beings after all, with the basic needs of our species. Barney the Dinosaur's message of love and sharing and caring are just what the world needs right now. These messages of love are often missed by some of our mainstream religions. Jesus preached a message of love which seems to be missed when the focus is on dogma. As for other religions, the Sufis are an example of muslims who have found the love in the Islam religion and there are the Kabbalists in Judaism. ( I'm mentioning these two examples because they are the ones I am more familiar with.) On the internet I have found many incredible groups in Israel working for peace..... but I wonder if any who read the articles and feedback here are really interested in finding peace, or able or willing to find the courage to let go of their fears and protectionism to reach out to the "other."
