Perhaps not as silly as it appears because well into the late 19th century many Jews converted to escape the persecution on them by the Vatican. Shakespeare himself was a closet Catholic but if his parents had converted for the same reason that would explain a lot. It is known that he wrote to favour the ruler at the time so perhaps his over the top depictions of Jews was confirmation of his parents abandonment of that religion.
