1. Sometimes there is no place left for respect
perpetual_dream ,   jerusalem   (09.30.06)
Ray, the israeli jews have left themselves with no respect from anyone. They are walls of hatred and stealing others land and denying inoccent americans of arabic origins entry visas to their homeland. Last week Ive seen a jewish girl who told me that sometimes she hates herself being jewish seeing these acts of her government and ppl.
2. Ray why don't YOU apologize!
Edan ,   Israel   (09.30.06)
For saying that Israel planned the second Lebanon war prior to the kidnapping. That is a despicable lie and your wife should slap you in the face for saying that. How about an apology to me for calling me names and lying about my views on a public forum. For those of you reading this, Ray said that I am a hater who never criticizes Israel. Anybody who knows me personally knows that that is ridiculous. I am strongly against the settlements in any way shape or form, and wrote that very explicitly to him. Pathetic liar. But I am also against YNet giving a weekly article to someone who has absolutely no credentials for writing about middle-east politics other than the fact that his father was palestinian. Apparently Hanania is also a real-life journalist which is hard to believe given the fact that he almost never reports factual information and always puts his anti-Israel spin on everything. I would like to see his actual credentials, if he really has any. BTW Ray, Yom Kippur is about atonement for ALL sins, man against man, man against god, man against octopus, etc... So here is my apology Ray - Sorry for having a brain which has enabled me too see through your propaganda. Too bad your wife is a different story, apparently.
3. Ray's fantasy world of moral equivalency
Zionist ,   Israel   (09.30.06)
This whole article would make a lot more sense if the two sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were morally equals. They're not though, and speaking as if they were is quite ignorant and damaging (but I don't think Ray is too worried about that). Even the very name "Israeli-Palestinian" conflict is misleading and detrimental to understanding the problem and reaching a solution. This conflict is between Israel and Islamic fundamentalists, not the Palestinians. And this leads me to my main point. People like Ray who speak as if Israel is on the same playing field as Islamic extremists by conveniently replacing the word "terrorists" with "Palestinians" are the main cause for the perversion of reality that brings Israel so much unjustified condemnation and hatred. Those ignorant people should re-consider their use of libelous propaganda against Israel. After all, look what happened to those that espoused these methods just over 60 years ago.

5. suicide bombings
eugenie ,   jerusalem   (09.30.06)
There hasn’t been a suicide bombing for a while - says Ray. However, Qassams are being showered onto Southern Israel on a daily basis, injuring people and destroying property. Why haven't there been any suicide bombings? Yes, because of the wall but also because the attempts are being thwarted. Not because the Arabs have suddenly decided to act rationaly, give up terror and start talking peace: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3308611,00.html http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3308421,00.html http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3308195,00.html http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3306988,00.html http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3289007,00.html http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3285913,00.html http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3279470,00.html Edan, you are SPOT ON, as usual. Gmar Hatima Tova, my fellow Jews, may all of us be written in the book of life! Ramadan Mubarak to my fellow countrymen, the Israeli Arabs, and to my Arab neighbors! May all of us find the way to peace and understanding!
6. Sam Bahour has a right to return...
david singer ,   sydney australia   (10.01.06)
...to the homeland of his ancestors prior to their conquest and occupation of the land of Israel. Jews have done just that by returning to the homeland promised to them by God, or if that is too far back for you, by the League of Nations and the United Nations. Quit the crocodile tears and let Sam and those like him get on with life, not thoughts of death and martyrdom. This madness has been going on for the past 120 years. Wake up and smell the flowers. They are so much nicer than the stench of death.
7. Shana Tova. Gmar Hatima Tova to all.
Yehuda ,   USA   (10.01.06)
True, Yom Kippur is about realizing your errors and seeking forgiveness from everyone involved in your life. But, after Yom Kippur a person can no longer hold a grudge against someone who hurt them in the past year. You must clear your conscience of grudges or hatred and move on. Most Jews I know move on in life – there are always some haters and their lives are miserable for it. I hope that more Arabs learn to clear their conscience of hatred and make peace with reality.

11. If Ray had his way........
NS ,   Long Island, NY   (10.01.06)
If Ray had his way this Yom Kippur, I would be apologizing for the following; a) being born a Jew. b) believing in the concept of an independent Jewish State (in other words a Zionist!) c) being gratful that Israel has 7 million citizens and growing. d) being proud that Israel has the IDF to watch the front and back doors of the country (despite some mistakes made in the recent war which are being corrected as we speak). e) supporting AIPAC because it represents the overwhelming wishes of the American Jewish Community and it dwarfs anything Arab Americans can come up with. f) being grateful that the percentage of sucide bombers entering Israel has dropped because Israeli security forces are that good. g)being proud that despite problems, Israel's economy makes it surrounding neighbors look like hobo communities. h)being proud of the fact that William Shatner and Leonid Nimoy are Jews. That's right! Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock are Jews!!!!!!!! Shana Tova!

15. Edan - war WAS preplanned
Arja ,   Canada   (10.01.06)
Jerusalem correspondent Matthew Kalman reports that Israel had been planning for the war with Lebanon for a long time because they knew that Hezbollah was stockpiling missiles. And IF Camera (Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America) doesn't correct his piece, I believe that from an Israeli perspective it must be pretty accurate. www.camera.org has a mission to check the news to make sure it's fair to ISRAEL. Matthew Kalman wrote: (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2006/07/21/MNG2QK396D1.DTL&type=printable) Israel set war plan more than a year ago Strategy was put in motion as Hezbollah began gaining military strength in Lebanon - Matthew Kalman, Chronicle Foreign Service Friday, July 21, 2006 (07-21) 04:00 PDT Jerusalem -- Israel's military response by air, land and sea to what it considered a provocation last week by Hezbollah militants is unfolding according to a plan finalized more than a year ago. In the six years since Israel ended its military occupation of southern Lebanon, it watched warily as Hezbollah built up its military presence in the region. When Hezbollah militants kidnapped two Israeli soldiers last week, the Israeli military was ready to react almost instantly. "Of all of Israel's wars since 1948, this was the one for which Israel was most prepared," said Gerald Steinberg, professor of political science at Bar-Ilan University. "In a sense, the preparation began in May 2000, immediately after the Israeli withdrawal, when it became clear the international community was not going to prevent Hezbollah from stockpiling missiles and attacking Israel. By 2004, the military campaign scheduled to last about three weeks that we're seeing now had already been blocked out and, in the last year or two, it's been simulated and rehearsed across the board." More than a year ago, a senior Israeli army officer began giving PowerPoint presentations, on an off-the-record basis, to U.S. and other diplomats, journalists and think tanks, setting out the plan for the current operation in revealing detail. Under the ground rules of the briefings, the officer could not be identified. In his talks, the officer described a three-week campaign: The first week concentrated on destroying Hezbollah's heavier long-range missiles, bombing its command-and-control centers, and disrupting transportation and communication arteries. In the second week, the focus shifted to attacks on individual sites of rocket launchers or weapons stores. In the third week, ground forces in large numbers would be introduced, but only in order to knock out targets discovered during reconnaissance missions as the campaign unfolded. There was no plan, according to this scenario, to reoccupy southern Lebanon on a long-term basis.

Thanks for speaking up about your experience with Hanania. Zionist, thanks for noting Hanania's "moral equivalency problems." Maybe it is just not a problem, just a joke. As Ray says, its sarcasm and and nothing more. SOME KUDOS TO HANANIA. At least he is trying to balance his article. He applies sarcasm to Jew, Arab, and Christian alike. Maybe he's went back and read some Royko's. You have to have some balance or you loose that half of your readership . . . unless you are attacking a universal demon. One note: Does Hanania know the following: Yom Kippur requires is also about atoning about sins that man commits against man . . . Or, is that just sarcasm too? Hanania writes, "Now I know Yom Kippur is not about atoning for sins that man commits against man, but rather for only those sins between man and God. Basically that means if you do something bad to someone else, you will have to deal with it when you face Judgment Day." Another thing. One belabored theme running through much of Hanania's humor is that he plays the game "your another" excessively." This is like the teapot calling the kettle black. Hanania must be the teapot. Anyway, it doesn't take much wit to do this column after column. It's a crutch. Hanania, find some good British satirists and go read them. They are know for their subtle wit. It usually gets them some respect and mollifies the knee-jerk angry reactions even when the writer cuts deeply. Oh, one last thing. Relying so heavily on your-another-humor is nothing more than using examples to make a point. As I said before, Golda Meir so aptly said, "... Gentlemen, ... for example ... for example ... EXAMPLES PROVE NOTHING." Ah, but for Ray its "sarcasm and nothing more." Can anyone take this stuff seriously?
17. Something to Atone For
Knave Dave ,   U.S.A.   (10.01.06)
Why has Israel lost (or is imminently facing losing) every piece of ground it has taken beyond what the League of Nations was willing to give? Did not God say when the first Jews entered the Promised Land, "You may say to yourself, 'My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.' But remember the Lord you God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers.... If you *EVER* forget the Lord your God ... I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed!" God warned the prophet Moses: "They WILL foresake me and BREAK the covenant I made with them. On that day I will become angry with them AND FORSAKE THEM; I WILL HIDE MY FACE FROM THEM, AND THEY WILL BE DESTROYED!" This was to happen after they had entered the Promised Land. History, it seems, repeats itself. "Many disasters and difficulties will come upon them, and on that day they will ask, 'Have not these disasters come upon us because our God is not with us?' ...When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, THE LAND I PROMISED ON OATH TO THEIR FOREFATHERS ... And when many disasters and difficulties come upon them, this song will testify agasint them, BECAUSE IT WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN BY THEIR DESCENDANTS." (And, amazingly, we remember the song nearly 4,000 years later!) And the Song of Moses says, "They have acted corruptly toward [God]; to their shame THEY ARE NO LONGER HIS CHILDREN, BUT A WARPED AND CROOKED GENERATION." A secular nation, perhaps, filled with corrupt politicians and no God bigger than themselves??? "Is this the way you repay the Lord, O foolish and unwise people?" And for such days as when the strongest military in the Middle East cannot defeat a band named Hizballah, the song says, "How could ... two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them?" Where is your God, Israel? Why are you losing all the lands you strove by your own blood and sweat to take? For nearly forty years you have tried to take the land by force and failed. "Do not say to yourself, 'The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness."... Understand, then, that it is NOT because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiffnecked people. Remember this and never forget.... "And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to LOVE him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.... "Circumcise your HEARTS, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer. For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality.... He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow and LOVES the alien..... AND YOU ARE TO *LOVE* THOSE WHO ARE ALIENS for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt." Think back. The Day of Atonement is here.

20. hate and atonment
Arja ,   Canada   (10.01.06)
Last night I read an interesting interview with Gilad Atzmon, Israeli novelist and jazz musician. Yes, he is one of those "self-hating Jews" listed in masada2000.org. Do you atone for the evil hate literature at that website? I found Atzmon's solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict very thought provoking. This is a summary of what he says, but he continues to explain it further (even knocking some of Chomsky's opinions... hmmm food for thought for sure!) >>Only one answer is possible, namely the One State Solution. As you may know, I do not believe in a peaceful solution, i.e., peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Such a solution would fail to address the Palestinian cause, namely ‘the right of return”. But in fact, it is far deeper. The notion of peace is totally foreign to the Hebraic psyche. Sharon said recently that Israel wants peace (shalom) but it insists upon “determining its terms and conditions”. Clearly, for Sharon peace is a pragmatic decision, it is the product of burgeoning rather than an endorsement of the concept of compassion and reconciliation. Sharon’s statement reveals a major Judeo/Christian cultural clash. Basically, the difference between Jews and Christians could be summarized into one sentence: Christians are Jews who love their neighbours. Whether this is the case or not is a big question. And yet, one thing is clear, Western thinking values compassion and love of the Other, this is the reason that Jews could never merge en mass into the Western cultural environment. Jewishness is a celebration of negation. Jews (especially Ashkenazi ones) always locked themselves behind ghetto walls. Not surprisingly, they apply now the very same wall tactics in Israel. This kind of an isolationist identity can never endorse real peace. ... For Israelis and to a certain extent, for the post-Talmudic Jew, to Be is to Hate. Once the Israelis stop dropping bombs and hating the world around them, they won’t be Israelis anymore, they would become “Hebrew speaking Palestinians”. Let me assure you, this is something that will happen by itself, it is an inevitable demographic shift. We, the supporters of Palestine, have only one duty. To help the Palestinians survive the next 20 years. We must stop the ethnic cleansing that is already largely in progress. We must bring hope to the Palestinian street. Our duty is to expose the Israelis and their Zionist agenda. We can put pressure on their society and politicians as well. This is what Barenboim is doing. The man delivers hope through beauty just because beauty is his weapon and I think that he uses it rather effectively.<< (Dec 17, 2005 at www.inblogs.net/peacepalestine/2005/12/gilad-atzmon-interviewed-by-manuel.html) I have to admit, I'm a bit shocked and dimayed by his description of Jews, HIS own people... oh yeah, he's self-hating... hmmm maybe that proves the point after all. Perhaps it's my Christian childhood that makes it so hard for me to understand so much hate. As a child I took Jesus' message of love as the gospel truth! It's still a good message though I'm no longer a Christian. But I've always found it hard to talk about people as "haters" though Ray, doesn't. Ray, perhaps Gilad Atzmond's perceptions about the differences between Christians and Jews explains the unwillingness to recognize and atone for the injustices against Palesinians -- to atone for the .....Eungenie and Dr. NO, are you ready for my chirping of the "O-word" .... the brutal OCCUPATION???
21. # 17 Haggith - question
Arja ,   Canada   (10.01.06)
Haggith, as in David Haggith who wrote books about Bible prophesies? Your Biblical interpretation is very interesting. Thank you, though, I don't believe in the Bible per se. Yet there are truths expressed in all great books and indeed the Bible is a great literary work. It would be interesting to reinterpret those proclamations from a psychological perspective. As you state, and as Gilad Atzmon suggests, the downfall of Israel is approaching.... as must also our extravagant lifestyles in Europe and North America. There can't be such polarization of the wealthy and the poor for it not to end, such political corruption, such greed, such immoral behaviour in the name of God, be it the Jewish, Muslim, or Christian God. Personally, I see it as a time for maturation of our human species, of transformation... or at least, I think that in my brief moments of hope. At other times, it just feels like THE END, not just of Israel but 'all the children of God' -- i.e. humanity in general.! You write: "A secular nation, perhaps, filled with corrupt politicians and no God bigger than themselves???" Isn't that the truth in Israel and elsewhere in the world, like the USA.. and Canada... and and and a long list of countries. I agree, human beings are thinking of themselves as gods. We can see it in how we treat our planet. We think we can control nature... as if we were god. Too many of us have lost our connection with the divine and with nature. How can such people expect to survive? Such HUBRIS! How do you perc!eive this end to come? Is there any way to prevent an extremely catastrophic end to our life as we know it?

More irrelevant nonsense by Ray an American born Christian with a Jewish wife. Whose nonsense American opinions based on third hand hearsay. This man should write about Hamburgers and baseball and American stuff that he understands. The middles East is a serious topic for those who live and breath it. We are ancient peoples. Jews, Druze, Samaritans, Maronites & Arabs. This man does not have the emotional or intellectual tools to understand what we are going through here. Americans (Jews and others) MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!! Leave us alone to sort out OUR PROBLEMS!!! AMERICANS have enough of their own problems- racism, violence, drugs and their wars that they fight for fun abroard. We in the middle east are not Americans and we don't want to be!!

Thank you Arja and Ray, for making me work wo hard to go looking for evidence for anti-Jewish anti-Israel propaganda. Knave Dave   (10.02.06)
One and the same, Arja. Sounds like your childhood belief in the love of Jesus understands him quite well -- better than some of his followers. You may be closer to him at a deep level than you know. Anyway, I believe there is very little chance that Israel is going to find peace, though we are called to pray for it AND work for it. ("Blessed are the peaceMAKERS.") The hatred among groups like Hamas and Hizballah is too entrenched to give way. The lust for the land by Zionist Jews, too overwhelming to give way. The belief that "God is on our side," too strong on both sides. There is very little room to negotiate. Then you have hundreds of thousands of Christians feeding the frenzy by encouraging intractable positions. There are sensible people who do not lust for land and do not hate on all sides and who are peacemakers at heart, but the extremists are numerous and are hell-bent on getting things 100% their way. Christian Fundamentalists are one-sided in their support for Israel, no matter what it does -- even though their Christian brothers and sisters in the region are mostly Palestinian. Christian, Jewish, and Muslim extremists all believe this is headed toward their version of Armageddon, AND THEY DON'T CARE! In fact, they HOPE it does because then the Messiah, Moshiach, Madih will come and save the right side (and Jews will all convert). They believe this ultimate conflict is inevitable, but don't seem to recognize that perhaps it was prophesied precisely because God knew these religious zealots would bring it about in their own misguided efforts. God, himself, says his words are self-fulfilling. ("My word will not return to me empty.") They seem blind to prophecies like the one in Amos that says, "Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light." (Amos 5:18) The scariest thing is that they are so arrogant in knowing that their interpretation could not possibly be mistaken that they are willing to take the whole world to war. They put land ahead of justice for all and the covenant promise ahead of the covenant requirements. They deny the covenant was even handed down with requirements, such as God's requirement to LOVE the alien among them. They do not see that the land was a reward not an end in itself and that God always said the reward would be taken away from the unrighteous. Over and over and over again God reiterates the numerous curses that will fall on those who presume to enter and own the land while living unfaithfully to God and unjustly toward their neighbor, whom God loves. Those who are faithful to God would love the Alien among themselves because that is God's character, just as you have noted about Jesus. When you love someone, you want them to prosper as much as you want yourself to prosper.
28. re: #22, Americans MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!!
Knave Dave ,   U.S.A.   (10.02.06)
"Leave us alone to sort out OUR PROBLEMS!!" There are many in America who would love to do that. All of us in America would be much richer it we took our military (which is enormously expensive to us) and our financial support completely out of the Middle East. You seem to want American money by the BILLIONS of dollars and American military and intelligence support and diplomatic support, which has over and over again been the only thing between Israel and extremism in the U.N. Yet, you think Americans, making SO GREAT an investment AT THE COST OF THEIR OWN BLOOD, have no right to express opinions and concerns about something that is costing them so much. How realistic is that? If America pulled out completely, the Middle East would wash right over Israel. America is the one true friend God has given you. Imperfect like all friends, and determined to try to be fair toward Palestinians and not one-sided, even though no Palestinian seems to believe that. So America incurs great anti-Americanism (even at the level of 9/11) around the world that is largely due to our support of Israel, which greatly irritates some Arabs like Osama bin Laden. But I guess, even paying so high a price, we have no right to express our opinions, which (surprise, surprise) are as varied as yours in Israel.
29. Balance
Michael ,   Seattle, WA   (10.02.06)
Everything tries to find a balance. It is time to balance anger with peace. I am an American, but I did not choose this. Parents I never even knew chose this for me. My soul, like all of our souls, belong to the world. My heart tells me that peace is the right path, thus I will follow that path. Every child born did not choose their existance. Every child born is a spiritual being experiencing an earthly existance. A well-known Arabic writer once said "children are the arrows we shoot into the future." I would suggest we start there, teaching them peace and how to avoid conflict. How kindness can prevail. Good article, Ray. Preach balance.
