Ice   (10.05.06)
If you personally did not succeeded here, go back. But tdon't try to generalised your failure by telling other people not to come. The failure is you not the government.

Ron ,   USA   (10.05.06)
Mr. I'm sorry for your pack of cures, you made your own bed sleep in it. Not to many people leave a $ 50,000 job in 1979 ($100.000 now) and go to Isreal to get the same or better. Return back to the USA and get welfare and Medicade.
8. Come back
Sattouf ,   USA   (10.05.06)
Come back to the US...Israel is for the Palestinians anyway...you had no business to go there in the first place.
9. hang in there
Yosef   (10.05.06)
moving to israel has never been an easy task. think what it was like for the pionners who truly who truly had to struggle with no air conditioning, no army, and long hours of work. things will get better and israel is still the best place for a jew to be
10. How absurd that after 25 years he still expects handholding!
Realist   (10.05.06)
If he had moved to the US 30 years ago, what programs do they have for absorption of immigrants? None at all, you sink or swim. However, to think that after a couple of decades the system should still take care of you is absurd. You're a citizen like any other.
11. He left a $50K/yr job and hasnt been employed since?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (10.05.06)
Why am I having trouble believing this load of dreck?
12. totally atypical
bread   (10.05.06)
while I feel for Rubin, this is a very very atypical story. Clearly, he has made some mistakes (like the check thing -- which by the way seems to have occurred like 20 years after he made aliyah) but it is wildly irresponsible to portray this as a "news story" -- it's a terribly sad public interest story, that is true. and i hope mr. rubin gets some help out of it. But this is not typical of the average person who makes aliyah and should not be published as a "warning" to potential new immigrants.
13. finally
kaiser ,   boston,ma   (10.05.06)
finally someone who dares to speak out...the average jew cannot survive the savegeness of israeli society...jewishness is not necessarily israeliness...
14. One size doesn't fit all
Morris ,   Binghamton, NY, USA   (10.05.06)
Rubin's story is a tragic one, but fortunately, doesn't apply to all immigrants. He has some good, serious points that should be investigated and considered. Yes, the country does need a bureaucratic/governmental reorganization. However, he made aliyah at a different time, and now, there is the Internet and various organizations that specialize in educating olim about Israeli life and helping them succeed (i.e. Nefesh B'Nefesh). Also, and this is merely my opinion and what I gathered from the article, Rubin didn't seem to have any support network/friends in Israel prior to coming. And since he was older, he didn't have to do any army service, which would have undoubtedly helped him adjust to the culture and meet people. Basically, it seems like he was dealt a raw hand all around, but that's the chance you take with something as immense as aliyah. I just hope it's not the hand I'm dealt when I arrive in March...
15. black market checks?
nathan ,   hoboken, nj USA   (10.05.06)
how can a check that was purchased on the black market, voided by the bank, then be used in a court case to get the fund back? I have never heard anything like this? Why in the world would you use a check if you need to be worried about this kind of non-sense?
16. Israel is a crime-ridden dump. I spent three months there
Adamush   (10.05.06)
Don't worry about being caught by the Police, they are next to useless. Good luck leaving though - Israel is an enormous lunatic asylum you can't ever run away from.
17. #'s 4.5.7. &10.....big shots eh
zaq ,   ranaana   (10.05.06)

18. The person who owes the money is the landlord
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (10.05.06)
This man needs a good lawyer! If I give a check to someone and it bounces, the person comes back to me! Not to the person whose check it is. What he's saying doesn't make sense.
19. Shame on you Y-NET
Raymond ,   South Africa   (10.05.06)
Once again you have no story to fill your news page, so you find an idiot loser American who cant make a living & this is suppose to represent most immigrants to Israel.Your patriotism astounds me, Y-Net. Shame on you. Am yisrael Chai
20. WHY?
Eve ,   NYC   (10.05.06)
Why is Yediot printing this absurd story. This man sounds like he needs more than financial help.
21. No one promised you a rose garden!
Mark ,   USA   (10.05.06)
Aliyah was not supposed to be easy. If it was aliyah figures would be on the rise.
22. Chaos, Confusion is the norm
Mark ,   USA   (10.05.06)
You have to accept that is the way it is. it’s not quite ‘first world is a true statement. It is not the Garden of Eden. not even close. Everyone is told that when they make aliyah. They have to accept reality! Accept it. Get over it or it will eat you up alive!!
23. Need solid answers
Steve ,   USA   (10.05.06)
B"H When a Jew makes alyiah, he or she has some serious questions to address. How important is family? How secure am I in this new environment? What is the state of the Jewish people? Some people do not think that the Jewish people is mature enough net for them to join in a state assembled with Jews. The excile is a process of redemption and cleansing, and we have not reached the end of that process as a Jewish people yet in excile. We either need to deal with each other in Israel with our sins there or we need to deal with each other and the other people who are not Jewish outside. Some Jews are scared of the behavior of other Jews in Israel and are not inclined to subject themselves to such abuse. Others are able to deal with it. There is no doubt that it is a huge risk. The price has seemed too high for me to make the switch over.
24. (1) this case; (2) data?
sk ,   USA   (10.05.06)
(1) I notice that, so far, there's little sympathy (except from #6, a "fellow sufferer") for our Jewish brother from those in his adopted country. Is this the take-home mesage? Some responses are plain silly. "Realist" for example says that the US doesn't have programs for absorption of immigrants. Well, you foolish "realist," the US's program is called long-term economic growth and relatively few barriers to wealth for those who work hard. Yosef (9) says "hang on" for ... how many more years? Let's say that Rubin is telling the truth here. Are any Israelis willing to help him? (2) Where are the data on aliyah experiences, preferably broken down by country, age, and degree of observance? Are their survey data on satisfaction? It is NOT unreasonable to expect such info to be available. One should not be blamed for making a change based on false information. Markets are not efficient under such circumstances.
25. something funny here
megan ,   Israel   (10.05.06)
now if Rubin cancelled the cheques for 11,000nis..informed landlord....did he then pay the landlord cash..or still owes him. It is very true, immigrants should be advised of all these things, before they make aliya, including the difference in culture. Hope Rubin will manage to sort himself.
26. Aliyah
Alex ,   Rehovot   (10.05.06)
We I don't care about all thos funky check stories yet after making aliyah last year I can tell you that the Jewish Agency is a well organized lying entity which depict Israel as a paradise. Yet as soon as you land you start realizing it was all a lie to comply with constantly failing inmigrant quotas. Shame on them!! Don't come here if you dont have a specifict objective, otherwise you wont adapt.
27. stoped checkes
(10.05.06)
if you stop a check on someone the check is worthless the only thing you can do is try and fight the guy. if someone sells vioded checks the guy buying should be pist at the seller i once rented my apt. to someone in Jerusalem and he stoped a check on me i got screwd bad (but what can you do) in this guys case at lease he told the landloard by me i put the check in it costed me $20 on top of the money i lost any way in the israeli court system the only thing he will have to pay is the NIS11,000 (wich the guy owes anyway)

30. What a crock
Former American ,   Haifa   (10.05.06)
I made aliyah 25 yrs ago and I have no complaints. I got lots of financial help for the first 3 years, and in general was treated very well. Each time I go to the states for a visit i feel more and more that I made the right move. However I don't think that I srael is right for every American Jew, no matter how much help they get
