A syrian ,   United States   (10.06.06)
Amen! Finally someone comes out and speaks reason! Wafa is a little harsh; however, we need someone like her to be an eye opener for all. There will never be peace in this world if everyone followed what their books are teaching them.
3. Thank u!!
Mohamad ,   Mekaa   (10.06.06)
It needs a lot of courage to talk like this I congratulate u!!!

linda   (10.06.06)
Yes WE! In Islam they say that we all men are born muslims. So learn your own religion!!!
10. True Insight..all know it since ages but doing nothing !!!
KMR ,   Middle East   (10.06.06)
11. Wafa speaks from her experiences.
kassim ,   australia   (10.06.06)
Indeed Islam is very much a political ideology as much as it is a law by itself. One can only realise the ramifications after either being raised or having been subjected an environment where the written law, however harsh, brutal, discriminatory or unjust, cannot be questioned in any shape or form. Those querying these laws will consider themselves very fortunate if they are shunted, dismissed from their emloyment or driven away from their homes when many have been tortured in prisons or executed. Indeed the Islam marketed in the western world like Australia, the UK and the U.S is in very stark contrast to those practised in lands governed by the religion. It is for this reason that we must extend our friendship and assist our Muslim neighbours the best way we can so that the harsh and unjust practices (especially in the Middle East, South, Central and South-East Asia) will eventually cease.
12. FINALLY AN HONEST ANALYSIS OF ISLAM

Peter ,   UK   (10.06.06)
I completely agree with you, We are all born muslims, then we make our choice to stay muslims or to go astray and she made that choice. BY her own words, she said that she is an Atheist. How can an atheist be a muslim at the same time.
14. Wafa
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (10.06.06)
Such a small voice in such a vast wilderness.... And yet, even the longest journey starts with one step. It seems such a shame that so many of us only know what little we do know of Islam, because Muslims threaten to kill us? What a waste of life on this beautiful planet!!!
15. she is contradicting her self, please read
Simon Mohammed ,   VA USA   (10.06.06)
She is free to talk and be an anlayst but she is contradicting her self, I won't care about her opinion but i can challenger her. 1st - in her interview with aljazeera she stats that she is not Jew, christian nor muslim, and she is free to be what ever she want. BUT intoday interview she said We as muslim people have been Hostage of etc... refer to the same article. That a big contradiction and i am sure she will not be a good psychologist to the science and her patient them self. every thing is recorded here and she can challenge it. 2- she is talking about cancelling ISLAM all of it and praising other religion while stating she is embarassing any one of them. she is not a reformist nor progressite, she lost and doesn't know what she is talking about. I myself have my own opinion about what went wrong in the muslim world i show respect to every beleive even to those who don't beleive in religion but do it to other one. Now my challenge here to see the voice of every one in this formu to tell me what do you excepct from a doctor who ignore the basic rule of self and mutual respect including to her self. Please every one be free and speak up with logic and reason. Good luck
16. Sultan
Brod ,   USA   (10.06.06)

mike ,   t.o.   (10.06.06)
I guess she was talking about not wanting to beyour fourth wife, beiing stoned for adultery, hide her face as a subhuman. in islam man usurped women and now are trying to usurp non-muslims. That is what she was trying to say. Is that clear Simon?
19. Finally!
Dave Verd ,   Monterrey, Mexico   (10.06.06)
It is so refreshing to see a corageous Arab woman coming out and pointing a finger to the reality of how Muslims ARE imprisoned by the murderous factions of that religion. Perhaps others Arabs can stand up (some men as well) and follow Wafa's example.
20. #15
kassim ,   australia   (10.06.06)
What u think if we all make an effort to protect the victimised? Would a move with the family to Iran, Sudan or Pakistan help?
21. An 'expert' opinion
Libneniyye ,   Lebanon   (10.06.06)
Isn't it pathetic that this is what gets published regarding about Islam? And from whom? Who is this woman that claims to be an expert while she knows nothing about Islam, neither the religious nor the political aspects. Let her read what Islam has to offer woman, and how it raised their status. Let her know of the women doctors who practiced during the spreading of Islam. Let her find out how muslim men are supposed to treat their wives, and how much respect and financial security she is given. Let her just shut up.
22. Zionism needs transformation
Marc ,   Perth   (10.06.06)
And this is the opinion of most of the world. You dont need a crackpot psychologist with an identity crisis to tell you that.
23. Attack the person?
Michael ,   Seattle, WA   (10.06.06)
Most of what I hear in the talkbacks involves attacks on the writer. It is much easier to kill a person than an idea. Ask yourself the logical question - is it right, no matter what religion you've chosen. to commit violent acts against others? Read the words of your scriptures. Is it logical? Does it make sense? Is there really a heavenly reward for taking the lives of others, for whatever reason? Be Peace in every step.
24. to # 17, I think your guess is wrong mike
Simon Mohammed ,   VA USA   (10.06.06)
go again read listen and do some anlaysis. there was no need to personalize think on my person it not a fear discusion as you do not know what i think about the whole thing. Does talking logicaly to you make you made Mr. Mike. I will be more outspoken here. she should have work on her english accent at the first as she lived in the US for 17 years, been a doctor and get interviews on TV Channel. Am I free to state my remark about her st Doctor or not allowed and i will be prosecuted? understood Mr. Mike
25. Perspective
Libneniyyeh ,   Lebanon   (10.06.06)
From an interview March 10: "Dr. Sultan bitterly criticized the Muslim clerics, holy warriors and political leaders who she believes have distorted the teachings of Muhammad and the Koran for 14 centuries. She said the world's Muslims, whom she compares unfavorably with the Jews, have descended into a vortex of self-pity and violence. Dr. Sultan said the world was not witnessing a clash of religions or cultures, but a battle between modernity and barbarism, a battle that the forces of violent, reactionary Islam are destined to lose. In response, clerics throughout the Muslim world have condemned her, and her telephone answering machine has filled with dark threats. But Islamic reformers have praised her for saying out loud, in Arabic and on the most widely seen television network in the Arab world, what few Muslims dare to say even in private. " There is a big difference between religion and religious institutions. I for one am a Muslim who has little faith in Muslim clerics and authorites. I believe that religion is something personal. You have your faith, your book, your god, and your brain and judgement. To criticize the religion because of how some people interpret it speaks of a dangerous but willful blindness. ALL religions have been politicized and used for various gains, not the least of which manifest themselves in the violent anti-colonial struggles that erupt in diasporic communities around the world. How can she, a doctor, not see beyond her own nose? How can she not see the frustrated anger, the attempts to lash out against threats of 'westernization' or 'modernization' for what they are? These acts of violence have little to do with Islam. They are the result of years of oppression by colonizing and conquering powers, and then still more years of oppression by corrupted governments and rulers who have never had a good example to learn from. Violence can only breed violence. I would for once like to see an educated person speaking about the realities of todays "Muslim" world.
26. something to think about
EZ ,   US   (10.06.06)
One thing she says is key: that Islam in many places extends its reach beyond religion/spirituality to define political and military goals of a nation. This has always been a problem and is not exclusive to Islam. In the West there is an abysmal history of state/religious conflation. But after hundreds of years religion has accepted its role outside of political sphere in the West for the most part. This is not to say that there are no problems. But, in general political leaders in the West do not seek/need approval from religious authorities. Religious authorities, when they make political comments in the West are generally ignored. In Islamic nations, there is much more of a tendency for clerics to assume political roles and to preach directly about political and military ends. This is also why Islam is able to survive in Western cultures but Christians and Jews feel under attack in Muslim countries. Muslims should think about this.
27. Polygamy in Judaic history
Jay ,   USA   (10.06.06)
The great Hebrew patriarchs equally revered by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - Abraham, Moses, Jacob, David, and Solomon, to name a few – were polygamous. According to the Bible: Abraham had three wives (Genesis 16:1, 16:3, 25:1) Moses had two wives (Exodus 2:21, 18:1-6; Numbers 12:1) Jacob had four wives (Genesis 29:23, 29:28, 30:4, 30:9) David had at least 18 wives (1 Samuel 18:27, 25:39-44; 2 Samuel 3:3, 3:4-5, 5:13, 12:7-8, 12:24, 16:21-23) Solomon had 700 wives (1 Kings 11:3).[3]
28. This doesn't hurt...
BouSameer ,   Beirut Lebanon   (10.06.06)
One has to conceed that Islam has been very resistant to reforms or critisisms from within. You can't blame Sultan for being so harsh and sour in her attack on Islam. I am not saying she's necessarily right in what she says. What is to blame is the system that prohibits open minded debates about Islam in most moslem countries. And this is resulting in having more frustrated, angry people like Sultan. The rethoric against Islam is growing in the West. We should assume that some of those arguments may be valid and must preferably be addressed openly -not defensively - in the Moslem world, and not exclusively in the West.
29. Wafa Sultan gives us hope
Johnson ,   USA   (10.06.06)
She is a brave, and intelligent woman who deserves a larger voice, and our support.
30. Thomas Jefferson Wrong
Sheldon Waxman ,   USA   (10.06.06)
Islaam violates our constitutional separation of church and state. EITHER JEFFERSON AND OUR CONSTITUTION IS WRONG OR SEPARATION IS A NECESSARY ABSOLUTE. No transformation, there should be SEPARATION.
