2. What is wrong with our BANKS?
Kate ,   Jerusalem   (10.11.06)
Please excuse my naivette - but I was under the impression that when a bank forcloses a mortgage - they take the house and own it in place of the loan. So how is it that Siom lost his home and still owes the mortgage on it??? Is there some wierd banking problem in Israel that doesn't exist in any other bank in the world? If this IS the case - our Knesset needs to fix it fast. If it's not the case - our Knesset needs to pass new legislation to prevent confiscating salaries. This really is a problem that only the government can solve.

gabriela ben ari   (10.11.06)
people who live on social security are confiscated their salaries right away. They should be allowed a half year period of overlap to adjust. On top, many of those jobs are not permanent either, and much money is used to repay debts
4. "sell what you have and give to poor"
augustine johnson ,   birmingham, alabama   (10.11.06)
did not yeshua say to do this --- i think he said woe to the rich also --- mother teresa seemed to have done this, saint francis also -- but few , maybe in israel also , would do such to help the poor ========= augustine
5. How this affect aliyah?
Fern ,   Colombia   (10.11.06)
You have to evaluate aliyah programs. Bring people to Israel prone to be future homeless is non-sense, unethical and money waste. Gola people considering move to Israel must have in mind they will depends upon their own current assets for future welfare
6. #5 - even I'm not that naive
Kate ,   Jerusalem   (10.11.06)
Fern of Columbia, The line between "doing okay" and living on the street is thin. A small twist of fate and you could be homeless tomorrow - as could I. It is not possible really to know in advance who will suceed and who will fail. It is not possible (and certainly not humane) to weed out potential olim in that way. And if we did find a way - how would it help the problem of native born Israelis ending up homeless? It wouldn't. The poor will always be with us - no matter what society or circumstance. What we do need to focus on, I believe, is a social and legal system that supports financial rehabilitation - rather than impeding it - which is what our current system does.
7. Not the land of milk and honey
Mark ,   USA   (10.12.06)
The homeless must be allowed housing in a kibbutz in exchange for work.
8. To Mark
Ariel ,   Ramat Ha Golan Israe   (10.12.06)
Earth to Mark. What planet are you living on? Do you think there is unlimited work or housing on kibbutz? Kibbutzim do house different public welfare projects. But they do not have the means or the wherewithal to solve the problem of homelessness in Israel. Due to privatization, there is now unemployment on Kibbutzim and Chaverim who live on the poverty level.
