Steve G ,   Kew Gardens, NY, USA   (10.11.06)
U.S. media is having a jolly old time have hitting the panic button. It's not any worse than a truck veering and driving through a storefront. Move along folks, nothing happening here.

9. Let's get this straight
Steve G ,   Kew Gardens,NYC   (10.12.06)
Let's get the facts straight. The entire plane weighed 3000 pounds. That's as much as a small pikup truck. It was made out of composite, so it folded immediately. The fires were caused by an 80 gallon gas tank and the only part of the plane to enter the building was a relatively tiny engine. The people in the apartment struck escaped by opening the door and exiting into the hallway. The fire department and the people in the building moved around in the still-working elevators. The media showed the apartment in flames for hours after the few minutes it actually burned. It was crummy local news hype. The airplane itself is a teeny-tiny thing built to come down with a built-in parachute in case the engine stops. Everyone is back in the building because there was less damage done than if it were a stove fire. There was no danger at any time to almost anyone (except the unfortunate pilot and passenger). Get over it.
10. Show some compassion
Jill ,   Colorado   (10.12.06)
People died today and they are someones father mother sister brother or son. All death is sad no matter what the reason. The major thrust of Panic stricken was not the US media it was the New Yorkers running and screaming in the streets. Justifiably scared at the uncertainty of what happend. This is the USA we aren't used to daily death and destruction like the middle east has. The pain is still real for many in NY of 9-11 let them deal with this their way and Move Along . Pray for them and the ones who lost a loved one. Peace

my friends and I would fly planes over manhattan (little cessnas), and today, we look back in awe at the risk we took and the current world and paranoi- we did shoot film one time, on a project, but I would never fly over NYC again- post 9-11-as who knows what would happen-

I've heard of a pitcher running out of gas, but...... Who would have thought a yankee would hit the wall in the post-season. Sorry if you find this posting offensive, but the devil made me do it.
13. The realities of NY News
Steve G ,   Kew Gardens,NYC   (10.12.06)
There are over 21 million people in the immediate NYC area. That means that a certain number of people die every day. The plane made interesting pictures and jogged memories of a worse tragedy, but it was in reality nothing like Sept 11th. The news outlets played it up in their usual irresponsible tabloid manner. The real facts are that once people realized what it was, they went on with their lives. A light rain emptied the streets. The fact that it was a Yankees' pitcher gave the story a spin. However, it took away the opportunity for silly news people to endlessly speculate about it being terror related. As I said, you can ALWAYS find a trainload of murder, violence, crime. heart-breaking and tragedy stories to throw on the air because of the size of the population. This one was just marginally more interesting with good visuals, so they jumped on it . . . hard.
14. to Steve G of Kew Gardens

It got a lot of attention because of four things: a) It raised the spector briefly of 9/11, which most folks remember and which most folks don't want to happen again. b) Because of reason a, the military pulled a response learned from the 9/11 aftermath out of its hat, leading to much more discussion on the news. In essence, people panicked, and panics make good news sometimes. c) There was a spectacular explosion and people were killed. This usually = news when not at war (and I don't exactly consider the "war on terrorism" a real war at the moment). d) One of the people killed was a New York Yankees ballplayer, and that also amounts to news because he played major league sports. Yes, it may have been a bit overblown, but I'm still at least paying attention to it because it's not everyday that some aviator bumps into a skyscraper.
