31. Aren't the Orthadox Jews Exempt??
Craig ,   USA   (10.12.06)
Am I mistaken, or aren't the Orthadox Jews completely exempt from military service? If so, isn't that a bit hypocritical of the authorities to be so hardnosed in this instance? Shouldn't the parents be the one's who are in trouble. Maybe they did leave so she wouldn't possibly die in a war, but she was still under-age at the time...there needs to be some other way to deal with this than to simply incarcerate her. What if they left when she was 16? And what is all this talk about Olmert's kids?
32. '2 "stick her in prison"
Rustum ,   London, UK   (10.12.06)
yet another charitable comment from the witch of central Israel. As well as calling for a never-ending list of executions, Ms Talula is now jumping up and down with joy at the fate of teh hapless Mizrahi woman. "Stick her in a military prison, she'll be able to ponder all her problems in there". Does your soul have one iota of charity in it or does it really make you happy when you read of other peoples' misfortunes? You are one great psychopath.
33. Kyle's zionist beliefs
Rustum ,   London, UK   (10.12.06)
So, one of your relatives had a hard time in Israel and you are thnking twice about "aliya". That makes you one great Zionist. The smallest set-back and you turn into an anti-Semite. wonderful!
34. #33 Becoming an "Anti Semite"
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (10.12.06)
Rustum, when I criticize SOME Israeli arbitrary government decisions it is not Jew Hate. When you criticize Israel for everything, all the time, it is only because of your Jew Hate. You only don't know the difference because you are a Jew Hater.
35. #32 "rustum": nothing like an ad hominem attack
dante ,   uk   (10.12.06)
nothing like an ad hominem attack...when that's all you've got. the issues are whether the woman made a commitment to appear for service and whether she, otherwise, had a service obligation. one who lives in the uk can't begin to understand life in the middle east and life as part of a society that has had savage mortal enemies for thousands of years. if you had had the decency to have kept your mouth shut, you would have been one of the few; why should you be different?
36. Israel is a giant open-air prison
Adamush   (10.12.06)
Nice enough country, of course, but I wouldn't want to be a citizen of it.
37. Parents at fault
Ronnie ,   Gedera, Israel   (10.12.06)
It is her parents who should be sitting in jail. They took her out of the country when she was still a minor, knowing full well that she had an obligation to serve in the military a short time later. Don't punish this young woman for her parents' wrongdoing.
38. You are all missing one crucial point. Shelly
Allan ,   US   (10.12.06)
was born and raised in the US. She is a US citizen. Although she may have dual citizenship by virtue of her parents return to Israel for a short duration her US citizenship still trumps and takes precedence. She newver gave up her US citizenship. Her lawyer ought to contact the US consulate and file a complaint that a US citizen is being held by the Israeli Army and request their intervention.
39. WHY OLMERTS' CHILDREN ARE NOT ARRESTED FOR DRAFT-DODGING
ariel ,   afula   (10.12.06)
they also live in USA & didn't serve in IDF
40. #35 read the subject
Rustum ,   London, UK   (10.13.06)
Amazing how many people cannot read the written word. The point of my "ad hominem attack" is because the woman in question jubilates permanently and in public over every bit of miserable news that she reads. The rejoiced in the killing of Lebanese, rejoiced in Palestinian deaths in Gaza and now rejoices that some poor shmegegge from the US is in prison for not having done her paperwork correctly. The woman tourist made a mistake and is unwittingly in prison. I think you, and all right-minded people will agree, that the comment posted by the to'evet in '2 is completely inhuman. I'll quote her so that you can refresh your memory: "Stick her in a military prison, she'll be able to ponder all her problems in there. " What a lovely person. I'd sure like to meet her someday.
41. #34 anti-semitic claptrap
Rustum ,   London, UK   (10.13.06)
You said, "when I critcize some Israeli arbitrary government decisions, it is not Jew hate." Wow! So when you say something, it is not Jew hate - even if it looks like it, even if it reads like it, you have now decided that the word of Kyle of Southpark is that you alone may criticize arbitrary decision of the Israeli government. I am so glad you are beyond criticism and that your every word is a pearl of non-critical criticism, and that you have the great legal learning to decide what is and what is not an arbitrary government decision. I'm floored by the intellectual power streaming out of Southpark.
42. Full Circle
MAGMAN STEVEN ,   NYC,USA   (10.13.06)
I am an American that went over to serve, i am a Zionist, i did more then i want to remember and i think she should go to jail and serve her 2 years, so what she was born in FL. The IDF said that she went for her interview and put off going and agreed to serve when she came back, this might be a blessing for her, i think this will be the best thing for her, maybe she will meet her future husband in the Army, i wish her a easy service.
43. to craig # 31
MAGMAN STEVEN ,   NY,NY USA   (10.13.06)
Boo hoo, no one is exempt till after there interview and that is the time to speak up, if you are studying torah, then that is the time to speak up and give them all the paper work that you are going to yesheva. From the facts that we have, she was at a couple of interviews and agreed to come back after a year, she made the deal, she is not a child, she know just like I did and any other citizen of the great nation of Israel and she would have died in war maybe, BS she could have gotten hit by a car crossing Collins blv. in Miami, I think it is fair punishment and I wished every day when I was in the army that I was never born but, now looking back I would not trade those days for anything, they made me who I am today and ready for the day I need to go back and help straighten out any of our neighbors that need to feel a magman wrath.
44. israel has ruined this girl's life.
a jewish lawyer ,   usa   (10.13.06)
since she was put in prison by the israeli government and has been in jail for a month, she now has a criminal record for draft dodging. this record will follow her forever and no country, including the usa, will want or trust her. she will be considered an undesirable and a security risk where ever she tries to go. this case makes israel look bad, not the girl--who walked into a trap of which she not informed. it wiil discourage people from traveling to israel where the laws are too strict and there is no justice, it appears.
45. is she american or israeli?
American ,   USA   (10.13.06)
she cant be loyal to both. so if revokes her israeli citizenship-she should be innocent. then she has no obligations to israel. i knew this issue of israeli military service would eventually become an issue with regards to citizenship. interesting- see how it plays out- its like israel is charging her with 'treason'
46. Chahamei Chelm
Ariel ,   Ramat Ha Golan Israe   (10.13.06)
THe absurdity of the situation is, that this is a no win situation. The poor girl will be in prison long enough to ruin her vacation and destroy whatever connection she has with Israel. But we all know she will never do service for anyone. So what was the purpose of the whole exercise? The other absurdity is the consistant inconsistancy of the way obiligation is enforced. What about Olmert's son. What about all the certain famous young female celebrities who get religious exemptions and then used the time to forward their career. I'd like to see some of them serving time.
47. #46 chahamei chelm
Rustum ,   London, UK   (10.13.06)
Have you ever considered serving time yourself for the crime of living on stolen land?

54. Dual citizens who get called up have obligations
clean up your mess ,   Israel   (10.14.06)
Clarification: Firstly, just because she has an American passport, doesn't mean she's a tourist. This is because she also has an Israeli passport. It's called dual-citizenship, so no, she's technically a citizen, not a tourist. Secondly, she lived in Israel while she was 17 and received a call up. This constitutes a legal obligation that, if she wanted to be relaesed from, requires a process. Ironically, this girl's situation is one conducive to receiving a dispensation of service. The IDF is particularly lenient in giving females dispensations for a number of reasons. From personal experience, as a dual citizen who went to college in the US, it is easy to get a dispensation if you ask and explain and go through the proper channels. However, she didn't ask for one. She dropped the ball. She asked for a postponement and was given a specific date by which to return and she simply did not acknowledge that date. She could have handled this situation in a responsible manner, but she did not. She can't expect the IDF, who has to deal with thousands of soldiers, many with equally if not more complicated backgrounds, to go above and beyond looking for extenuating circumstances in order to forgive her. The onus is on her (or her family) to sort out her obligations. I'm sure she's really nice, but she handled this badly and now she has to clean up the mess that she herself made.

57. Apparently I am a deserter too
DeserterToo ,   San Rafael,CA USA   (02.11.10)
My parents brought me to Israel when I was 17. Having lived in Israel for six months we packed our bags and left for good. I got issued teudat-zehut and lesse-passe, which apparently makes me an Israeli citizen. It has been 20 years, I don't remember what paperwork I signed, besides I did not understand Hebrew st the time anyway, so I could have signed anything. Today I am a citizen and an officer in the reserves of a different country now. It is a little ironic that being a Jew I can not visit Israel. And, I can be an officer and a draft dodger at the same time. In any event, this article is good information. I've been thrown into the brig on more than one occasion, but 20 months plus whatever amount of service required creates a strong enough disincentive to never set foot in Israel ever again.
