1. Idiocy
Daniel Sieradski ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.15.06)
If you don't think that pumping hundreds of tons of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere every day is contributing to global warming, you are a fool, plain and simple. And to ask "where is the evidence" when ample evidence has been provided for over a decade, you demonstrate a clear bias likely in the interest of keeping costs down for the corporate polluters you're likely shilling for.
2. #1 Agree w/u
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (10.15.06)
Who is this David again sharing some baseless opinion ? My! Is he a geographer, climatologist, what the hell is he ? There is every evidence indicating mass destruction of our only planet by irresponsible human activity. The more common being:carbon dioxide CFC, toxic gases, not to mention the millions of squared acres that go deforested in the Amazon every year (and mostly illegally), to provide newspapers , combustions, grazing land and who knows what. While climatic changes are also natural and fluctuate, nothing 's been so dramatic in eleveting global temperature (almost 2 cd) in the past few years ! and elevating sea level. Ice in the poles decreased their volume in such speed in the past twenty years that hardly anyone wouldn't blame it on man. David might have an issue with green peace, as may be, many do, cause they have some political agenda too. But this is not the only group ecologically minded neither. I wonder how deep his investigation went to treat such burning issue in a "matter of opinion" irresponsible manner Buy i guess that this is the best ynet could get to fill up a column
3. The Cigarette Analogy
Michael Storch ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.15.06)
One wag has compared scientists who argue against the global warming scenario to those scientists employed at tobacco companies who argue against a link between smoking & cancer. Fair or not, that's one hell of an insult. Google "royal society exxon".
4. Incorrect facts
Andreas Weil ,   Israel/Sweden   (10.15.06)
Mr Verveer, your article has at least two incorrect facts. Firstly you claim that we only have temperature records over the last hundred years, and we have no idea on temperatures earlier. This is incorrect, we have in fact Ice cores from Antarctica that show that the Carbon dioxide levels are higher now than at any time in the past 650.000 years and as you know the higher the Carbon dioxide levels are the higher the temperature are. Secondly, the amount of precipitation has in fact increased by 20 % globally in the last century, but it does not increase in already dry areas, it has decreased and the deserts are expanding in size worldwide.
5. WHO TO BLAME?
al mann ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.15.06)
Man, as a species, is unable to take responsibility for what happens on earth in all areas of existence. Therefore, the blame is shifted to science and a wobbly earth. Technology and modernity is to blame because it has caused all of the negative results which man suffers today. Man is unable to reverse the course of "progress". He cannot reverse history and really has no desire to do so. There is too much financial loss for the minority who control the majority. There are too many ulterior motives which cause the average person to pay the price for elite minority. At the end we all pay the price.
6. Here is your proof.
(10.15.06)
It has been found that the solar antler was reduced by 15% all over the world. furthermore, the reduction of the solar antler would have caused an ice age a long time ago - it is known that it was caused by air pollution (fact: The sun isn't failing). Those facts points out that only the global warming can keep the globe hot as we know. - sorry for any misspelling mistakes.
7. Problems of extrapolation
Ilan ,   Ariel   (10.15.06)
Anyone with basic statistics knows that extrapolating a trend beyond reliable data is unreliable. Moreso when dealing with a non-linear curve as in climate. Beyond less than 200 years there are no data that can be said to be completely reliable.. Prudence would dictate that some limit of carbon fuels would be a good idea though, if only to conserve the reserves for future generations. This is an issue that has been over politicized.
8. global warming
kenzi ,   sarasota florida   (10.15.06)
Have you ever gone to the store and bought a bag of ice? Have you ever-bought m and ms? Well as we know they melt. Could you imagine bye the time you get from the check out center to your car all of your ice or m and ms would be melted. Well folks matter of fact if we continue to do what were doing we could enter a world just like that. Cirrettes, factory smoke, or any type of smoke is killing us can you imagine a world with out smoke, the average person would live to about 105 our world would still be about at a regular tiputature. And our trees give us air our fatorys and parking lots give us…nothing zip zone nothing! Our animals and coral reefs are a part of our envierment when the water gets hotter the reefs die and fish have to go elsewhere. When the fish go away we have none to eat. So the time you have to go all the way across the street to get an icey just remember it wont take long to walk there and besides the more you ride your bikes and walk the more gas you save so don’t be aferid to take a hike.
9. OMG!!
stephanie ,   tel aviv   (10.15.06)
Wow. I'm stunned. Where did this genius come from? Is he aware of the mutated frogs in ponds where factory run-off is dumped? Or of entire communities diseased due to smoke stack emissions? Or how's about the ozone hole over Australia? Don't let science stand in your way, man! Carry on perpetuating your theory!

zov ,   Rosenberg, TX   (10.16.06)
The whole level of this debate is such an agregate of naivity, ignorance and stupidity that participating in it puts one at risk of joining the club. The only acceptable method for measurement of temperature for scientific findings is based on the black body radiation spectrum. The black body was discovered in 1901. Since that time on, this is the only sorce of acknowledged measurements. All NASA discoveries in the structure of Universe were achieved with using this amazing device/methodology. There are hundreds of acting vulcanos on the Globe which throw in the atmosphere millions of tons of a variety of poisonous gases daily, Some of these vulcanos are under water. The surface of the Earth is a gigantic porous media absorbing the gases from the atmosphere. Should I continue? Perhaps bolshevick-stalinoid YNET will not let it go anyway.
11. Climate Change
Edwin ,   Canada   (10.16.06)
Yes, we are surely experiencing the dreaded climate change! But then, it has been going on for the last 10,000 years. We are still officially in an ice age, albeit near the end. This latest ice age has been retreating over the last millennia. And that is a demonstrable fact. I only have to take a short drive into the Columbia Icefields near where I live to witness the annual retreat of that glacier. But so did the previous generations. Of course as the ice retreats the ground warms up more rapidly. Anyone living in a cold climate knows this, and in the same way we anticipate a jump in daytime warming after snowmelt, we can expect an acceleration in warming rates as the white stuff disappears. It is not a hard concept to understand. As for human contribution to CO2, emissions from one large volcano dwarf our donation. Nevertheless, with peak oil, our emissions will be limited naturally. So, all you alarmists, be honest, and get a job!
12. We Love Heat
Heath Thompson ,   Gold Coast Australia   (10.16.06)
In response to the effect of Global Warming and the imputent moron that doesn't know the difference between carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, I would just like to say that we love the heat here so keep up those gas emissions because by the time the heat reaches unbearble levels I will be dead so HAHAHAHAHA but untill then just keep the heat coming.

14. Israel's survial threatened
Brad Arnold ,   Mpls, MN, USA   (10.16.06)
Frankly, I think it is ironic that Israeli leaders are so concerned about military threats to their country's survivial, when abrupt climate change is a clear, present, and immediate threat. Most people can't imagine a hostile climate that makes growing crops outdoors impossible. The consequences of an abrupt shift from the current mild climate of the Holocene to a more hot dry climate would be catastrophic. GCMs (global climate models) are giving a false sense of security by predicting gradual linear changes caused by increased CO2 levels. Yet, paleoclimatological records like ice cores show that when forced the climate changes abruptly from one stable state to another. It is predictable that in the next decade or two the earth will reset its thermostat 10C upward. Particularly for arid countries like Israel, or the Middle East region in general, this will be a bottleneck event. The only solution is to use the ocean to grow carbon fixing organisms to remove the CO2 from the air after it has been emitted. I am boldly stating that the only hope Israel has from avoiding a climatic Holocast is to lower the CO2 level in the atmosphere below 400ppm. You can't depend upon the Goyum to do this.

18. Global Warming (David Verveer)
Gale Whitaker ,   Newport Beach Ca.   (10.16.06)
The glaciers are melting all over the world. I have seen photographs of this phenomena. That proves that global warming is real. What if you are wrong and the world does nothing to stop the build up of co 2. The result could be the demise of the human race. Doesn't that seem like a risk that we don't want to take? Everything about using oil for energy is bad. Causes pollution, empowers our Islamic enemies, causes global warming, causes urban sprawl (cars) & and when it runs out it will cause a major economic disaster.
19. Quit worrying about global warming
John ,   USA   (10.17.06)
The political failings of man will cause the apocalypse long before the pollution will.

Rosie ,   Leicester   (10.17.06)
Dear Mr.Verveer, I was interested to read your writings on climate chnage and would like to point out several things. Firstly, not all people who are against climate change are alarmists. Some people are simply concerned about all the proof of the problem that we see every day. This leads me to my second point. I disagree that climate chnage is a good thing. The melting of the ice caps is causing more flooding than ever, and endangering the lives of many people, for example the poor of Bangladesh. I think that you are short-sighted in thinking that that all that comes from climate change is good - if we do have another ice age, people will die, as they already are. However, I do agree that we should remember the effect the gases have on people's health. Finally, I am sure that all the waste that we pump into the air must be making a difference to the earth. If we were headed for an ice age as you believe, we can only have sped it up by our selfish use of so many harmful chemicals. It seems to me that you have not really been looking hard enough at the world, and seeing the multitude of ill-effcts that we are already experiencing. Through all our use of disgusting chemicals, we cannot be simply moving side by side with changes that would have happened anyway. We must have made some changes, and if you would take the time to look, you would see plenty of proof. Yours sincerely, Rosie Bloom

Cuger Grant ,   London England   (10.17.06)
David, Study the facts a bit more old chap! If you really want some idealism and facts about global warming i would gladly send you a postscript of a book on the subject i am writing. It is very educational and truthfull.
22. I Agree!!!
Charlie Seed ,   London   (10.30.06)
I completely agree with Ms Bloom, who put her opinions very succinctly. I am a lecturer in environmental engineering, and I have to say that you are most ignorant to the disastrous effects that we are having on the environment. I feel that you should do a little more research and open your eyes before you publish such misguided writings.
23. Education is key
Kristin Ruyle ,   Tulsa, OK U.S.A   (10.31.06)
You cite a fictional author (not to undermine his intelligence) for your facts? And say that hundrends of thousands of ACTUAL scientists all over the world don't know what they're talking about? Have you even looked at the facts, or the world around you lately? Yes, the climate temperature increase is a natural cycle. WE KNOW THAT. NO, the dramatic increase in co2 and other greenhouse gases in our atmoshere in NOT natural, and WAS caused by humans. Where is the ice? why are mosquitoes huge? where are the tree frogs?why are whales dying of toxicity? Why does puerto Rico have tornadoes? There are so many more disturbing questions and the answer is because of HUMANS. You are egotisticle if you think this fact is not true. Oh, and yes, dinosours were killed by climate change, but only after a comet or meteor hit the earth, we know this because of the layer of uridium across the surfece of the earth. Lets hope that happens again before the earth gets completly detroyed.
