1. Dialogue
Michael ,   Seattle, WA   (10.15.06)
Couldn't we at least talk together rather than talk about eachother? In the US there seems to be this problem of not talking with N Korea because it would "legitimize" a regime we don't agree with. People are dying from a lack of communication.
2. What about Israel????
assim ,   lebanon   (10.15.06)
huh, sometimes I can clearly see the propagenda you are trying to do . in a period no body is talking about syria and no body see what is going on in Palestine, you still do not want us to be ready. At the last we were ready and we defeated Israel, but we did not say we do not want peace. How stupid one can be in not asking for peace. And let me tell you Isreal never wanted peace it always seeks for was and after being defeated starts talking of peace. and again Peace, Peace and Peace but we will be ready with God's support. Anybody heard the peace words I have said?????
3. Proof, let's see it
Steve G ,   Kew Gardens,NYC   (10.15.06)
"We have unequivocal proof on his direct involvement in smuggling weapons to Lebanon." If Israel does not show the world proof of Syrian arms smuggling, then these allegations are as empty as any Arab propaganda fairy tales. Photos, satellite surveillance, pictures of 18 wheel trucks with explosives blowing sky-high....if the world sees these then Israel has credibility. If no proof, then don't even waste your breath mouthing the words. Why doesn't somebody in the government wake up to this?
4. RULE #1: You're kind and decent
(10.15.06)
reasonable and rational; good-will and hope for peace, willing to communicate, your enemies are not.
5. To Assim
jesse ,   Haifa israel   (10.15.06)
Israel still has golan heights and sheeba farms and the ski resort on the hills. How was israel defeated. You have to lose something to be defeated. Hezbollah had their chance to get back sheeba farms and they failed. They were defeated. You are living in prisons with cluster bombs all around you. Your beaches have cancerous toxins in the water and on the beach. But if it makes you feel better that israel damaged your country and you fired crude rockets at us well be happy. You fired 4,000 rockets and killed 20 palestinians. It was not victory it was incompetence.
6. #1 I agree with you We need to talk!
Mark ,   USA   (10.15.06)
Face to face, bi-lateral, direct talks without any pre-conditions!!
7. And peretz sits back and does nothing
Arie ,   Afula   (10.15.06)
As usual. Does he want anoth Yom Kippur War? Seems that way. Every action the stooges take is more proof that their goal is the dismemberment of the Jewish State
8. RULE #2: Okay. Israel, Syria (et. al.) is in battle position
(10.15.06)
are you? PLEASE SAY YOU ARE...
9. maybe israel could be "defeated" like against lebanon
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (10.15.06)
if what happened against lebanon was a defeat, i'd take that kind of "defeat" against syria. why not? against a regular-type army, israel would fare much better because that's the type of fighting the army is suited for. surely dr. baby assad knows this?
10. The Golan Heights is an integral part of Israel
Viking ,   Jerusalem, Israel.   (10.15.06)
It has been under Israel sovereignty for almost 40 years (Under Syrian it was only 21 years...1946-1967). If Syria wants peace - She will get peace, but not the Golan Heights. Russia never gave Japan back the Kuril islands. Russia never gave Finland back the territories she took from her. Poland never gave Germany back territories from Prussia. Israel will not give the Golan back to Syria - For terrorizing northern towns in Israel for 19 years (48-67) - Syria lost its rights over the Golan forever!
11. to #3
(10.15.06)
No country wants to show her intel info in order to maintain her sources "health".
12. shouldnt israel try a pre-emptive strike !!!!
fadi ,   lebanon   (10.15.06)
a nuclear pre -emptive strike i propose !!!! this will teach north korea a lesson ... applying Bush the idiot strategies and policies to this situation !
13. no need for that .. just give more weapons to hizbullah !!!
fadi ,   lebanon   (10.15.06)
surface to air missiles and then we'll teach the israeli IDF chickens what real war is !!!
14. Steinitz Dire WARNING: "WE COULD LOSE the NEXT WAR"
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (10.15.06)
The strategic high ground of the Golan is vital to Israel's defense and must NEVER be surrendered! Global jihadists eagerly anticipate surrender of militarily strategic, Biblical Judea and Samaria for Global Islamic Terror State Two that will reduce tiny Israel to indefensible 6-10 miles wide Auschwitz borders - the goal of the U.S. EU UN and Russia. We could lose the next war By Ari Shavit Haaretz (Magazine section) 21 April 2006 Yuval Steinitz has two red rags: the Egyptian army and the Israel Air Force. ...Israel's dimensions are tiny and its borders are impossible... In the era of precision weapons the importance of territory does not decrease but increase...And Israel has almost no territory. Israel has no strategic depth. That is an Achilles heel that is liable to put its very existence at risk." All our airfields and our air control units and the power stations and the sensitive strategic sites are within a few dozen kilometers of the border. As such, they are vulnerable to surface-to-surface missiles and to long-range rockets, which are liable to knock them out of action and paralyze the Israel Air Force. ...we are liable to lose in a war." ...a vast army is being built in Egypt. Egypt faces no threats...but is investing billions in creating an army... The size of the Egyptian Air Force is about the same as that of the Israel Air Force, but the number of tanks, artillery pieces, boats and missile batteries is exponentially greater than ours. The Egyptian army is far larger than the IDF. "Since the mid-1990s, Egyptian doctrine, Egyptian indoctrination and Egyptian training exercises have been directed against Israel. Since the start of this century Egypt has also invested billions in relocating its military infrastructures so they are opposite Israel. Initially its surface-to-surface missiles were scattered across Egypt, whereas now they are massed against us in the Suez Canal region... http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/707577.html
15. Why is assad pepared
Y ,   Canada   (10.15.06)
for a defensive war. Because he knows that if the positions were reversed, he would attack Israel in a heart beat.
16. Looking forward to peace
Bancor ,   Genoa, Italy   (10.15.06)
I don't find any of unpleasant in the fact that Syria gets ready for a defensive battle; it would be bad indeed if it were getting ready for an offensive war, don't you agree? So, let alone doubts and be willing to meet and discuss, as soon as Assad will be ready to do: don't waste any opportunity of making peace.
17. 13
(10.15.06)
The only "chickens" are your! friends the Hiz's, who were hiding behind women and children and did not fight in the open like real men! Give us a break and get a life already
18. To #14 Linda Rivera
Bancor ,   Genoa, Italy   (10.15.06)
War, weapons, threats, surrender, existence at risk, missiles, rockets, liable to lose a war... Please, let's give up these words and that death culture! Let's try to speak a different word (while NOT disarming, of course), and maybe we have a different response from our counterpart. If we keep on this dark view of our life, how and when we'll find the strength to look for peace? Msr. Ravera, I read many talkbacks of yours, and I guess you are very strongly convinced that the future is only a neverending war. My ancient latin ancestors, who weren't the lowest, said "Si vis pacem PARA bellum", viz. "prepare", not "make": it's a bit different, don't you agree?
19. Damascus will be a heap of rubble
(10.15.06)
20. ASSAD A LOOSE CANNON, BUT W/OUT HIM SYRIA BE WORSE THEN IRAQ
DAVID P ,   SANTA CRUZ, USA   (10.15.06)
ONE THING THE ARABS RESPOND TO IS A STRONG FIST, AND ASSAD AT LEAST HAS SOME GRIP ON HIS POWER. WHILE HE MAY BE CONFLICETED ITS ONLY BECAUSE HE DOESN'T WANT TO LOOSE HIS KINGDOM THE SAME WAY HIS NEIGHBOR SADDAM LOST HIS RULE. ASSAD MUST PLAY BOTH HANDS OR ELSE HE FACES AN EVEN GREATER BACKLASH FROM HIS ON COMMUNITY LET ALONE A WESTERN SUPER POWER.
21. #18 BANCOR, GENOA, ITALY...WHAT WORLD DO YOU LIVE IN
DAVID P ,   SANTA CRUZ, USA   (10.15.06)
LINDA IS RIGHT, SHE'S TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT IS FINITE AND REAL. SURE WE'D LOVE TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD IN PEACE, AND LOOK FORWARD TO STABILITY AND SECURITY, BUT THE FORCES THAT BE, I.E. AT LEAST 21 ISLAMIC STATES WILL NOT LET US DO SO. ISRAEL, JEWS IN CONSTANT STRUGGLE FOR SURIVIVAL SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME. LET ME ASK YOU WHERE YOU WERE DURING THE ROUND UP OF JEWS IN ITALY DURING THE HOLOCAUST, DID YOU PROTECT US? JEWS MUST LOOK OUT FOR THEMSELVES BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE EVER HAS AND EVER WILL. HOW DARE YOU BE CRITICAL OF US, YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE HUNTED BY YOUR ENEMIES GENERATION AFTER GENERATION, CENTURY AFTER CENTURY, AND YOU ACCUSE US OF PERPATRATING A NEVER ENDING WAR.
22. to #10
DjazaĆ®ri ,   France   (10.15.06)
Viking : isn't it a true aryan pseudo?
23. But What About the Aswan?
Dave Levi ,   Burbank. USA   (10.15.06)
To Linda: the article is accurate about Egypt's massive army, and it's preparations for war with Israel (each year we know that Egypt has maneuvers designed to ultimately allow it's final "Jihad" againt the Jewish state (perhaps with other Arab countries, not to forget Hamas, and Hezbollah). However, Israel has an ace in the hole now...it's bombing the Aswan Dam back to it's foundations, thus flooding all of the Nile Valley. Alexandria will disappear, but Cairo would be unscathed. An Israeli nuke can take care of that quickly, which is why Mubarak continually asks for a nuclear free zone (no Israeli nukes) while building up his army for the Arab final battle against the Jews. (Sort of Moses in reverse). But, as then, Israel's G-d will prevail. and the Muslim hordes will disappear, not by the waters parting, but in mushrooms of clouds. If I were an Arab, I would think twice and 3 times about attacking Israel accordingly. Am I being draconian, you bet I am.
24. How Naive is Michael in Seattle
Paul ,   Seattle, WA, USA   (10.15.06)
You must be a rocket scientist from Airbus. Look how far the North Koreans have gotten with their weapons and spreading of technology. This is the result of all the babysitting that President Clinton gave them. Instead of chasing all the skirts, he should've taken a stand and stopped the BS when he could've. What is talking going to do except to allow the North Koreans to stall and play games.
25. #3: What is your explanation then?
NYC too   (10.15.06)
Syria's geographical proximity to Lebanon make it uniquely suited for smuggling just about anything, let alone weapons. How do you suppose Hezbollah amassed its stockpile of weapons if not from the smuggling of arms from Syria? Do you think the Israelis are going to publish satellite photos and give intelligence information just to satisfy someone like you, who apparantly has not figured out how to put 2 + 2 together? Get real!
26. Stand up for Lebanon
Paul ,   Seattle, WA, USA   (10.15.06)
I can tell you are still hiding in the rubble of your Hezbolla lies. Why not stand up for Lebanon and be a real patriot. Support your countryman in clearing the Hezbolla and Syrians out of Lebanon. If you don't then your children will continue to be their slaves as you are. Freedom isn't never free. YOU need to stand up for your country just like what the small country of Georgia is trying to do to Russia.
27. Read Isaiah 17 and see what happens.
Stan Orlowski ,   Anaheim,CA   (10.15.06)
Isaiah 17 Isa 17:1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
28. Paul, also Seattle
Michael ,   Seattle, WA   (10.15.06)
I believe it was the Reagan admin. who delivered uranium to the NK with the understanding it was to be used to build energy-producing reactors. The french sold whole reactors to Iraq. Our use of resources seems to define us, doesn't it? Maybe what is missing is EFFECTIVE dialogue. Our foreign policy really is lacking. Perhaps I'm a telemetry software systems designer and understand the importance of effective communications.
29. Talk
BJ ,   Basel, Switzerland   (10.15.06)
Israel should make clear to Assad, that she is ready to talk on territorial consessions - under the condition that Syria stops supporting all kinds of terror organizations directed against Israel. This step must be planned in a close consultation with US.
30. Effective Dialogue is one thing...
Paul ,   Seattle, WA   (10.15.06)
Youu might want to get some of your facts straight, because being once involved in the State Dept gives a better insight of what's happening. Effective communication is one thing when both parties are eager to participate and have a common goal of resolution. This is not the case. North Korean is playing games and you rather run than stand up for what is right. Clinton's policy and dialogue with NK really set the tone that makes NK believe that it can get away with everything.
