Hamas needs to engage Israel, politically there is nothing left for it to do. The 'roadmap' everyone shills for is LOOOONG dead and Hamas (and Fatah, lets not kid ourselves) saw to that. So what is left for Hamas? Nothing. They saw what happened in Lebanon. Israel fought with a blindfold and in handcuffs (the politicians fault, not the IDF's) and eventually capitulated to a ridiculous peace deal. Hamas may be trying to recreate those results with open combat. As soon as the first Israeli tank is hit, the media will carry stories about the changing tide in the conflict, the UN will urge restraint, the EU will urge surrender and the Arabs will urge suicide. The US will give Israel support and be heavily criticised for it. Israel will respond in kind. Many palestinian deaths will ensue and the media will gleefully take those juxaposed pictures they love of the Israeli military machinery against the backdrop of a demolished building. Olmert, being the spineless wuss he is will no doubt use this as evidence for conceeding land (a dangerous precident to give land under threat of violence) and Peretz will probably sit on his thumb as he always does (like he did when Sderot was being rained on by Qassams). Let's not forget that Hizbollah, in a show of solidarity will take this as a que to flare up its attacks and guess what? We are back in July/August 2006 again (great deal you got us there Olmert). Agree with Aaron (#38) in the first aspect of his assessment: Hamas is resorting to sabre rattling because it has nothing else to offer politically and economically. It spoke of Pal self-reliance and assistance from Arab and Muslim countries: where is all that money? When will the Pal people start asking difficult questions like where did the money for the anti tank weapons come when we are not able to feed our children? Only difference between Hamas and Fatah from this perspective is Hamas graft ends up in pocket of illegal arms dealers and Fatah graft ends up in European Banks. Either way Pal people lose. I have been in South Africa for two months now with my two younger children, Mayan aged 11 and Gabi aged 8. We left Nir-Am temporarily as a result of a bomb attack on the kibbutz in August, which almost killed my daughter Dana, who is doing her national service. I have left behind another daughter Kelly, who is completing her national service in two weeks' time. We would like to come home, to our home in Israel and in our kibbutz. But we are afraid to put our children's lives in danger. This situation is breaking our hearts. The only solution is for us to sit down and negotiate with the Palestinians. Alternatively, the IDF should formally declare war on the Gaza Strip and wipe out the terrorist nests for once and for all. The former option is, of course, preferable, but we would like to come home as soon as possible, to a safe environment for our children, whose lives are in our hands.
