I agree with your general contention that a schmaltzty advertising campaign (generally with an American slant) is no way to initiate a change in the negative perception that so many people have of Israel. Today when reading the Ynet news I viewed the jewish agencies video on its absorption centre and its activities to help the families and particularly the children during the recent conflict. This video would in one fell swoop contradict the perception that Israel and jews are racist and generally of caucasion stock. I married a non jewish chinese woman and have 3 totally non religious children of mixed race, but even their reaction was one of amazement at the sight of black and brown jewish faces living in a jewish environment. I am still a non religious humanist who has an antipathy to all religions but my essence is that of a jew... my race. I strongly believe that the constant emphasis on the religous aspect of being jewish is a negative factor, to non jews. Israel truely is in desperate need of PR. A few things that might help: 1) No more old generals on the airwaves. We need to have a yuong, attractive woman, a mother who people can empathize with, to tell our side of the story. 2) Reframe the debate. Put things in a historical contest. Remind people of 1948, 1967, 1973. Remind them why the PLO was founded in 1964 (before the occupation!). Remind them who is trying to destroy whom. 3) Increase our outreach. Broadcasts in multiple languages, by speakers of those languages. Americans think British accents are smarter, so have a young British lady responding to newscasters in America, a chic madmoiselle for France, etc. We must reach out and change to debate on every level, reminding people of historical context, of why we are right. Old majors in uniform trying to explain IDF manouvres will only reinforce negative images of Israel.

If we are advertising tourism to Israel on a Christian network then Pat Boone is a good choice. If we are advertising to young secular prospects then a beautiful sexy Israeli blond female in a bikini and a handsome Israeli muscular man on the beach are good choices.

To most people in Europe and North Africa (probably also in the Gulf States) Israel is a blank spot on the map. Sure, in the news there are some footage of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, but that's about all there is. IMHO Israel would gain much by broadcasting documentaries about day-to-day life; just the normal stuff. What does it LOOK like there? How does it feel to visit or live there? ... Setting up a movie industry could also be helpful. There are a lot of myths about Israel circulating here; debunking those would be much more useful than some kind of branding campaign.

The PR campaigns aimed at creating a fuller understanding of Israel outside of the conflict help people sympathize with our victims of the conflct. It has been remarkably successful at opening people's minds.

Stop promoting yourself as "the same" as the West... the more you do it, the more they lose interest. If you stepped back from this insane need to be loved as "the same" you'd see why. If Israel is no different from Europe/US, then WHY SHOULD IT EXIST? This is a real question, keeping Israel has a Jewish state and Democracy in the region costs billions in subsidies. As a thought exercize, If you could pick up all of "modern" Israel and move it into the US, you'd have the same intellectual capacity that brings in wealth, but none of the military needs. Sure, most of those needs are provided by Israel internally, but it's a "dead weight loss," there is no gain to having smart young Jewish men spend time defending Israel if they could go right into the workforce in a mini-Israel. Therefore, the MORE you demonstrate that you are THE SAME as them, the more they wonder why the hell you don't just go hang out with them. The more you celebrate your secularness on the world stage, the more secular Europeans wonder why you don't emmigrate to Europe and stop needing to deal with the region. If Israel is different, the world sees a reason for you to exist. But you have spent 20 years telling people that you are just like Europeans, and the Europeans are reasonably asking why the hell we all need to deal with these lunatics if y'all could live in the US or Europe. The world is NOT prepared to subsidize billions directly and indirectly (massive anti-Israel Arab armies indirectly push up oil prices, etc.) for "people like them." If you want PR, it needs to show the VALUE of a Unique Israel in the holy land. That is why in the US, Evagelicals and Orthodox Jews support Israel, and the secular left is losing interest. You really have an abstract sense of what really good advertising is about which is to present the product in the best possible way - just as you do when you dress and comb your hair. A country, as Israel is seen in the those, is a cold abstraction but it happens to be made up of very decent, well educated people who live in a wonderful place. As to whether a country can be marketed like a product, think of Rule Brittanica which not only changed the image of Britain, it established the Thatcher agenda. There's a lot of dissonent noise out there about Israel that needs to be short circuited by pressenting the many interest faces and facits of a wonderful country.
