2. Private schooling is NOT a right
Kate ,   Jerusalem   (10.30.06)
Public schools ARE a right in Israel. And we, the people, have the right to protest any part of this system that is unfair. For Orthodox parents to insist their children have a RIGHT to attend a particular private school is rather pretentious. For a private school to select their students according to parent's immigration background is morally ugly. So why would any parent send their child to a school whose authorities lack moral terpitude? Especially when the reason for private education is religiously based?
3. Ashkenazi laws basically Sephadic
Marc Green ,   New York USA   (10.30.06)
Ashkinazim have a short term memory regarding who set the bulk of the halachhic, philosophic and liturgic infrastacture for Judiasm. Names such as Rambam, Ramban, Yossef Karo,Eben Ezra, Abarbenel, RAN, ROSH, Chida, should hopefully ring a bell
4. sephardim: provide for your own schools
stop whining   (10.30.06)
If Ashkenazim don't want you in the schools they have founded GO AND STABLISH YOUR OWN. No one stops you from doing so. What makes you think nice ahkenazi families would like their daughters mixing with families of beaten and belittled women, drugs dealers and all that scum ??? If sephardic are so grandiose as rabbi Ovadia claims, well show your grandiosity. Every school, has a right to screen its students based on whatever criteria they agree upon
5. Don't do that!
enzo ,   london,uk   (10.30.06)
Forgive my ignorance, but isn't this a form of racism? Why on earth should sephardic girls be discriminated against? This is certainly a very bad news for all those who believe in a fair and democratic society in Israel! Ashkenazim should read a good history book to refresh their minds...!
6. sépharade
Sépharade ,   Urth   (10.30.06)
I guess it was OK 50 years a go to kidnap and take away little Yeminite kids from the parents and give them to European Jews and today they are denied an education based on those same reasoning.
7. To 4
Shai ,   Israel   (10.30.06)
Your comments show you to be a purveyor of gossip, which is a sin. Look it up with the Chofetz Chaim. No shortage of sinat chinam on your part either, another sin. If you think you are religious, you should probably take a refresher course. I'm sure that if each family were evaluated on its merits rather than lumped into the categories you imagine, there'd be many sepharadi girls who are even more worthy to enter these yeshivot than many of their ashkenazia counterparts.
8. #4"Every school, has a right to screen its students based "
T M ,   L J   (10.30.06)
Public schools dont have "basic rights" People do. Discrimination laws prevent "screening" based on criteria such as color or origin or family custom". They are allowed to screen based on the level of observance in the house, whether there is a television, non marital relationship in the house, etc. This intolerance practiced by people who are supposed to be spiritual leaders to our children is ae Chilul Hashem, "a desecration of of the Name of God. While the person is living he can not be forgiven for this sin.
9. America the land where Sephardic Jews were always equal.
Bethlehem, PA ,   U.S.A.   (10.31.06)
Historically, the United States has been the only country in the world which has always treated Sephardic Jews with honor, dignity, respect, and prosperity. Maybe in 375 years, the State of Israel will follow the lead of the United States and as well as the Torah.
10. to number 4
Steve G. ,   Teaneck, NJ   (10.31.06)
#4 You lack even a basic understanding of torah - the vast majority of these girls are from solid familes - they may be poor and sephardic - but so what - there is nothing negative in that #4 there is no our schools or their schools - we are one people
11. discrimination in schools
alinr ,   kfar saba   (10.31.06)
To #2. These schools are run privately, but are publically funded. To #4. You are a big racist. Its bad enough to be racist against other people, even worse against your fellow jews. To everyone, my sons goes to a Shas school in Kfar Saba. We are not haredim, but I got sick of the lack of discipline in the public schools. Rabbi Yosefs schools do an excellent job of educating the kids in all subjects and teach them to be menchs. Furthermore, they do not discriminate. My son is half ashkenazi, half sephardic. I have also seen a few very blond kids there.
12. #4.... crazy racist
Daniel ,   Jerusalem   (10.31.06)
The first part of your post is reasonable. So is the last part. The second part makes me SICK. You should be ashamed of yourself. A person like you should not call himself Jewish. I would recommend you to check out your lineage. The things you write are not things a Jew would write. Be ashamed. You have a LOT to ask forgiveness from. About 3 million people to ask forgiveness, I estimate. You better start REAL soon if you want to finish before Yom Kippur.
13. #4 Your Right On Friend
rabbi marketmaker ,   nyc ny   (10.31.06)
#4 is just scratching upon the crude surfaces...i am a recovering "middle eastern types" racist...& that is because of just a # of factual issues we really dont have to again mention & to add insult to injury...why do people dont like "middle eastern types" because a spade is a spade...& thier is a difference between a pitbull & a collie...physiological disposition...& i do everything i can to stay away from any interaction with these types...& BELIVE IT...they are aware of it & know it is very true...maybe in another few generations thier genes will get diluted & washed down a bit & get with the modern socially acceptable anglo saxon order... #4 sephardim wrote: provide for your own schools If Ashkenazim don't want you in the schools they have founded GO AND STABLISH YOUR OWN. Are you for real, how dare you resond to spiritual matters in such a foul and insensitive way!! Go do a talk back on Olmert - Leave these issues to people who have brain cells (human brain cells)
16. #4&company
Menachem ,   Sweden   (10.31.06)
# 4 and 14. You are a piece of filth; swines just like those who destroyed 6 millions of our brothers and sisters not so long a go.
17. shame
Mark ,   London/UK   (10.31.06)
A Jew is a Jew. There are absolutelt no difference between them no matter what the criterion.Sphardic and Ashkenazi are duty bouind to complete, guide and enlighten one another or else, with so many enemies we won't last much longer.Wake up people and don't act like school kids. And shame on #4.
18. The salt of the earth!
enzo ,   london,uk   (10.31.06)
Sephardic Jews are and have always been the salt of the earth. Our civilisation owes the Sephardic Jew the greatest accomplishments in the fields of science, history, religion, literature at least up until the 18th century (in modern times I'd remind you 5 Nobel prizes: Baruj Benacerraf, Salvador Luria and Rita Levi-Montalcini (all in Medicine), Claude Cohen-Tannoudji (Physics), and Elias Canetti (Literature), Enrico Modigliani), and there is no western European country that does not recognize that!
19. For religious people
N.L. ,   P.T.   (10.31.06)
the criterion should be, whether the families their children are mixing with, keep the rules of Shabbat (e.g.Shabbos kettle). The word 'mesorati' is toooo elastic. Some of them('mesorati') drive on Shabbat etc., and people have the right to want their children to mix with Shomrei Shabbat k'Halacha. The Mamlachti Dati schools do their best, but do not always succeed, hence these private schools where more rigorous screening takes place, are so popular. Sephardi/Ashkenazi should not come into it at all. Shmirat Shabbat should. Come on talkbacks, waiting for your attacks....in fact I could write them myself, as they have become so predictable...
20. not just sephardi
dovid ,   jerusalem   (10.31.06)
It is not just sephardi girls who are discriminated against. Also ashkenazi girls are. Basically we have a school system which is wholly publicly funded and is used as a personal fiefdem for these corrupt heads. Yashan, Chadash they should all be closed down it is a real scandal and Rabbi Yosef is right. Just oor Ashkenazi leaders are hopeless and do not care about there constituants.
21. Love and Truth, the Sephardic treasure
Manhattan U.S.A.   (10.31.06)
If Sephardic Girls are discriminated against, it is because they have heart and soul. I am not sure why the Ashkenazi culture represents the apex of Jewish life when all it is quantity and not quality. The reality is that Askenazic Judaim lacks spirituality and hypocrisy abounds at every turn Ashkenazi children often become drug addicts, sluts, and whores at a very young age. Look in Israel or any Jewish suburb in America. This is why one will always find Asheknazi people who felt left out and abandaoned by their own flocking to the nearest Sephardic shrine or house of worship to catch some rays of Jewish love and warmth where it still exists. One day real Jews will shun the Ashkenazic culture and religion as something only material and false. They will recall history and look at how the Ashkenazi people treated their own fellow Sephardic Jews and they will no longer be surprised as to why the Jewish people received the hate and envy of non-Jews: Because of the disrespectful behavior and hate of some small-minded spiritually dead Ashkenazi people. And if that truth hurts, then read what Albert Einstein said: "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds."

N.L....talkbacks are not so predictable as you say. In fact, what I'm going to write is sooo unpredictable you won't believe it: I agree with you!
23. This is all true It happened to my family
Al ,   Montreal   (10.31.06)
I am a Canadian born son of East European parents who survived the hilter camps. My son who was in Israel for the past years and whose mother is sephardic was denied access to a Yeshiva here in Montreal by a self annointed Rabbi who needs much to learn as to midos and simple respect for an individual. My son is an excellent student in Torah. I will not go begging this outrage of an individual to take my son into his yeshiva. I will be damned before I will allow myself to be subjected to a racist attitude from a so called rabbi. Having said that I feel cheated and spat upon by these so called guardians of the faith. Shame on these institutions for they exhibit racist behaviour. Shame on those very families to allow such an outrage of an individual to be the "leader" of this institution. My dad who survived the death camps who fought in the war of liberation and who lost a son in Isreal, laid tfillin on his arm and head till the day he died. These so called Rabbis would never even come to his heels in terms of menshlichkeit and midos. I am truly ashamed.

#19 N.L.   (10.31.06)
Ok. I amend that .'Tell me your ynet name and I'll guess your response".You didn't disappoint me, and happily, it was predictable. Must be the 'British' in me too. It's the Israeli wrath I'm soooo scared of... Here goes...
25. #23
Worried ,   Israel   (10.31.06)
Are you sure that's the reason? Are you an observant Jew yourself? If you are, and this was the process, then would you mind printing the name of this place? I would like to re-print and distribute your email, but only with your permission .Thank you.
26. #24
Menachem ,   Stockholm   (10.31.06)
Al, this is nothing new. I am the son of a Yemenite father and an Ethiopian mother. Once in NY I decided to take some Torah studies and the rabbi told me next time I should bring with me proof of my Jewishness if I wanted to continue taking studying there. It is the belief by many in the Ashkenazim community that unless your name is Kessler or Shapiro then you are not Kosher.
27. Its all true # 25
Al ,   Canada   (10.31.06)
Its as true as the nose on my face. I have nothing to hide. I am simply outraged and today I am in the position wherein I am to return this boy to Israel to an uncertain future I may add. As to your concern as to my religiosity. I cant simply state I have always been a kosher eating Jew. I certainly do not need to have my yichus checked by any one who may have smicha from some yeshiva. My yichos is not for sale, neither is my self respect. It bothers me that I need to have myself checked. Do you want me to pull down my pants to see that I am a Jew? I think not! As to the Yeshiva, I wont name it but there arent that many in Montreal. Here's a hint..Its Ashkenazi
28. No.27
(10.31.06)
I think #25 asked if you are an observant Jew, not if you are Jewish. Maybe, just maybe, some yeshivot, no matter from which sector, prefer students from observant homes?
29. One Final Word on this subject
Al ,   Canada   (11.01.06)
Here it is. 1) I want my kid to be a Jewish fellow who can learn and appreciate our Torah 2) If the pathetic families of that yeshiva are concerned as to my religiosity I would suggest they first hide their porno DVD collection from their kids. 3) I dont have porno at home. I have enough of it on Ynet parading as Jounalism. 4) Its this pathetic state of affairs that is leading to the mass assimilation of millions from Jewish life. 5) Jewish Education is a right not a priviledge in a free society such as Canada. 6) For those who are not as commited as I am to Jewish life this would be the ultimate turn off. 7) In my case I couldnt give a rats ass as to that Yeshiva, its Kehila or indeed its Hashkofa. 8) I bid you all a very nice day. Just dont play in traffic. 9) Next time a schnorrer shows up at my door, I will ask him as to his Yechus. I really must be carefull as to whom I am giving my money. Good G-d
30. Horrified!
Bat Kohen ,   USA   (11.02.06)
I cannot believe such horrific things are being written by Ashkenaz and Sephardic Jews about each other!Have you lost your minds? To the hater of Sepharic Jews, two words to you --- Baba Sali, and to the hater of Ashekenaz ---- Baal Shem Tov! As an Ashkenaz married to a Sephardic man, and the mother of a wonderful little boy, I have to say that I am really repulsed by such vile hatred and racism from one Jew to another! and to #4 , as far as I am concerned I have the best husband in the world. We have been together for almost seven years and he is very kind, courteous, loving, respectful and hard working as well as my best friend! My side of the family loves him! #21,My Sephardic husband,as well as my husbands side of the family loves me,and is very supportive! Hassidic belief is spreading like wildfire,a large amount in the Sephardic communities, whether you like it or not. It is said that the Messiah will come when the Baal Shem Tovs teachings are known to all,so so much for your beliefs! Calling Ashkenaz women, or any Jewish woman or child such foul names is disgraceful! Before Hashem will grant you mercy you have to do so to others. All you haters have just created some very negative angels ! STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
