1. Don't get ahead of yourself
Tsvi ,   World   (11.02.06)
Let's try fasting Yom Kippur and Tisha B'av first. Not to mention 17 Tammuz and 10 Tevet.
2. New Footage of the Assination
(11.02.06)

3. Interesting idea, and understand the gesture...but
ShmorgelyBorgely ,   brooklyn USA   (11.02.06)
The average Reform Jewish lay person (and probably most Reform rabbis) doesn't observe or acknowledge any of the public fast days (witrh the exception of perhaps Yom Kippur-and even that, in my experience most Reform Jews don't fully fast on-for instance it is very common for them to go out for lunch after shul in the afternoon of Yom Kippur-at a non-kosher diner). I suspect that if you asked most people identifying themselves as Reform Jews in the USA-at least-when is the Fast of Gedalya, or the 10th of Tevet, they would have no idea what you are talking about! They would most likely tell you that the only Jewish fast day is Yom Kippur, or maybe some would be dimly aware of the 9th of Av. So I really doubt that this new fast day will catch on!! (maybe a few activist Reform rabbis, that is it)!
4. reform rabbis?
Jessica ,   New Zealand   (11.02.06)
reform rabbis? Surely that's a contradiction!!
5. REFORMING AGAIN
BUSH ,   USA   (11.02.06)
First of all Gedalia was a religious Jew who kept and taught the Torah publically. If he died in our generation the reformed movement would probably celebrate. Rabin on the other hand was the exact opposite of him. Secondly the Rabbis then established a fast on his death day because it was through his death the last remaining Jews (whom the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar left in Israel with Gedalia leading them) left Israel which STARTED FULL EXILE of Jews from Israel. As long as Gedalia was there, there was still hope of returning. Once he died it was all over and we commemorate that day as a fast day just like 17 Tamuz or 10 Tevet when Babylon laid siege on Jerusalem and broke the walls of Jerusalem. I have no clue what Rabin has to do with the Temple being destroyed or with the Jews going into exile. All i can think of is the Oslo Accords which would have caused exile of Israel that thank G-d didn't succeed once he died, but in that case we should celebrate that he died not fast. Thirdly i don't understand the audacity the Reformed rabbis have to explain our History of Gedalia and the Rabbis then that initiated a fast day. The Rabbis then were all ORTHODOX, Rerorm Jews did not start until over 2000 years later in the late 1700's by Moses Mendelson. Do they think they are on the levels of the Rabbis and speak of them like they are all best friends 2000 years before them.

Jonathan ,   Israel   (11.02.06)
9. Another holiday they'll ignore
Garnel Ironheart ,   Canada   (11.02.06)
It's interesting. With about 100% of their membership not fasting on four of the annual fast days and with who knows what percentage not fasting on Yom Kippur, the Reform movement is now going to create another holiday that 99% of their membership will not observe.
10. Commemorate 365 days p yr at least don't officiate weddings
Harry   (11.02.06)
11. How about a taanit dibur?
Ilan ,   Ariel   (11.02.06)
Every day helps.
12. Are they out of their minds?!
Adam Segal ,   Raanana, Israel   (11.02.06)
What did Rabin do for Judaism that he needs a fast in his honour?
13. Who exactly is not going to eat?
YoJo ,   Stamford USA   (11.02.06)
OK, no weddings or "other joyful events", (I suppose that means your typical Reform mitzvah-less Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration), but they don't say anything about not eating. What does a "fast" actually mean to the Reform community? BTW, how many in the reform community know about Gedaliah? This is so ridiculous .
14. #7 says it all nothing more to say.
Yisraeli   (11.02.06)
15. He's only responsible for deaths of 1000s of Jews
Jew ,   Eretz Israel   (11.02.06)
Why not fast for him? To thank him for the "peace" (terror) he brought.
16. FAST FOR ALTALENA FIRST
(11.02.06)
17. how about yom kippur?
yn ,   jm   (11.02.06)
now if you can only convince your congregants to fast on yom kippur....
18. Reform
Rod ,   Fargo,N.Dakota   (11.02.06)

19. FOOLS!
KACH 613 ,   MEDENAT YEHUDA!!!   (11.02.06)
They dont fast on Yom Kipper but they fast for Rabin??? HA HA HA!!
20. this being the reform movement
Nathan ,   Netanya   (11.02.06)
...no one will observe the holiday in any event.
21. A Good Gimmik
Carmi   (11.02.06)
This is a pathetic gimmick spin from the reform movement but it shows what kind of of "news" the media is interested in publicizing.
22. Call me for Taanit Meir Kahane
Piranah ,   Chicago, USA   (11.02.06)
His Yahrzeit is at the same time as Rabin's. Why is he getting no attention from the Reform? Why do they believe that their religion has to adopte the tenets of the political left wing? Aren't they the ones most adament about separation between church and state?
23. FAST DAY
ELI ,   TEXAS   (11.02.06)
THEY DONT BELIVE IN REGULAR FAST DAYS. SO WHAT NOW?
24. desperation
dov ,   jerusalem   (11.02.06)
they are so desperate to find meaning in their meaningless interperatation of Jewishness that they have actually made complete fools of themselves. I almost feel sorry for them and the emptiness by which they have entrapped tnmselves into
25. Reform do hold weddings on Tzom Gedaliah
d boy ,   yeah   (11.02.06)
Several years ago, a co-worker in Israel was getting married, and gave out invitations. I realized that the day was Tzom Gedaliah. She then told me she was having a reform "rabbi" conduct the wedding. I told her it would be on a fast. She said the rabbi said the fast was not that important and it should not be a reason not to get married. I chuckled then. Now I am ROFLIP
26. 22- BECAUSE
Paul ,   Austin, TX USA   (11.02.06)
Kahane was a vile racist that espoused tactics that nearly shattered the European Jewry. If you fast for Kahane, you may as well fast for Goebbels.
27. I was under the impression that . . .
Motek ,   USA   (11.03.06)
. . . the Fast of Gedaliah commemorates the tragic event of the murder of a G-d fearing, bona fide Jewish leader. Where's the comparison??
28. Do they fast on Yom Hashoa? What about those assassinations?
Gidon ,   california   (11.02.06)
29. I thought the picture was of the Pope...
dave neil ,   jerusalem   (11.02.06)
The only thing the Reform Rabbis have going for them is that there congregants know less about Judaism then they do... It's deformed Judaism.
30. REFORM DONT EVEN FAST ON THE 9th of Av
(11.03.06)
The saddest day of the year, they dont even fast on that day, but they "will" fast on a day of a human being who gave birth to the myth about a Palestinain land and GAVE ARMS TO OUR ENEMIES. His death should only be a day for celebration same with Peres death when he dies eventually.
