1. you will leave the golan no martter what
ZD ,   USA   (11.11.06)
any Syrian who dares to talk to you without the approval of the Syrian goverment is a traitor,we have seen enough , your democracy of killing Palestinians and stealing land.
2. Ghardy is basically asking help from Israel to topple Assad
chanan ,   usa   (11.12.06)
Another thing he insinuates is that Israel hand over the Golan Heights to his supporters. For this he now says the all the right words we want to hear. There is no guaranty what his policy will be once his movement takes power in Syria. Israel has been cheated too many times in the past by the Arabs. Sorry for being a skeptic but this is what ME reality is.
3. Lately, Assad has been talking in his sleep
John ,   NZ   (11.12.06)
He feeds the supply line to Hizbollah to terrorise Israel. Now he's talking peace? Until he chokes Hizbollah, maybe, just maybe, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
4. trust
Michael ,   Seattle, WA   (11.11.06)
To make someone trust-worthy, one must first place trust. Eyes speak from the soul. Syria has only to benefit, as does Israel. Share a table and talk peace. Share souls.
5. YoU pEopLE wORry mE
ma ,   candaa   (11.12.06)
What are you talking about, the president is asking for peace, Farid why are you angry at assad i would never vote for you even if i could , you just want to be in power, well too bad, syria as a country should come first before your needs, In fact im going to send this to the president so he can jail you you are conspiring with the enemy
6. arab hate for israelis
Leb ,   Montreal, Canada   (11.11.06)
Arab hate for the Israelis does not stem from any given political system (be it democracy or otherwise); it is the result of years of experience. Israel has been among the biggest forces pushing for extremism in the middle east; not for peace or for justice, but for extremism and chaos. You might say that the Arab hate of the Israelis is a reflection of the Israeli hate of the Arabs.
7. Show me some moderate Syrians
Daniel   (11.12.06)
with the authority and desire to enforce a peace that will make Israel stronger.
8. God bless you Mr. Ghardy...
Maurice ,   Montreal   (11.12.06)
...for showing that there are indeed Arabs out there that can address the Israelis with good will. Imagine what the Middle East would look like if and when the Arab countries and Israel could coexist in peace and enjoy full cultural and economical exchanges! I wish you good luck in your efforts for bringing down Assad and his totalitarian regime, and for contributing to true peace for the Middle East.
9. Israel and Syria
Mohammed Choudhury ,   London, UK   (11.12.06)
Wow - what a powerful article! How did it get published? Anyway, whether Asad is a chameleon or a comedian, talks between Israel and Syria should not be avoided. Lets not waste this opportunity when the time is good. It's good to talk, it good to have peace.
10. Re#1
Jack ,   Canada   (11.12.06)
your talking democracy and kiling about Israel what about early 1980s in Syria more than 10000 people killed in Hama city & Aleppo ,( till now anyone critisize syrian government that person gone is it fair ? )Israel is there for 5000 years & going stay there another 5000 years its fact
11. Leb, #6
zov ,   Rosenberg, TX   (11.12.06)
In particularly, you forgot to mention how Israel in its hate pushed Erusalem mufty Hussein to create a special Islamic SS division in Europe with Hitler's blessing in 1942.
12. ZD; Syria is on Jewish land!
Daisy ,   USA   (11.12.06)
Get out of my land Arab!
13. Syrian Moderates?
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (11.12.06)
Much of what the writer says is true. However, there are very few real moderates in any Arab country. What Arabs call moderates would be extremists anywhere else. They say, "the devil is in the details" & when you come down to specifics, they don't compromise & recognize our legitimate concerns. Since a significant proportion of their population would support Islamic facists like Hamas or Hezbollah, democratic reform in Arab countries may not turn out too well, at least in the short term. Assad will fall in any case so any deal with Syria is worthless at present. My own opinion is that if Syria really wants peace, let THEM give up the Golan. They lost three wars that they started, who ever heard of the victor making concessions?
14. actions speak louder than words
tom ,   toronto, canada   (11.12.06)
for those who believe that bashir al-assad is ready and willing to negotiate peace with israel, they need only to look at the rockets that fell on israeli civlians last summer. or to listen to assad proclaim that any unifil attempts to block syrian arms smuggling into lebanon were a violation of syrian sovereignty. or to look at the resupply of hezbollah since this farce of a ceasefire came into effect. if it takes two sides to make peace, so far there is no danger of assad being one of them.
15. Yes, I agree ,Syria should give up Damascus
Micha   (11.12.06)
then we can have peace at last. We can drink wine together and dance and hold hands. That way Syria proves to the world that she truly wants peace. Oh, and one of you backward haters revisionist types out there mentioned Israel's hate for arabs? Ummm, did you read your history about Jews in moslem countries being expelled? And did you read about how the Jews were constantly attacked for decades before the creation of the state of Israel? And did you read about the PLO executive who said back in the 70s that the "palestinians" were made up to pressure Israel and act as an agitator? Did you read those or do you just spew what your mufti tells you? Are you that lame and that ignorant and that much in denial? I ask you, are you delusional as Walid Shoebat, former terrorists, says is the problem of the moslem world? Are you? Are you prepared for war? Is that what you want? Are you prepared to turn Iran into dust thought your evil words? Please take your lies elsewhere. I'm sure there are moslem forums where you can be congratulated for yet another hate-filled venomous letter. Bravo, I say. Bravo. You obviously don't like powerful Jews. Well, get used to it. We're getting stronger on a daily basis. And the world grows tired of the threat of moslems.
16. never underestimate the stupidity of the israeli gov't !!!
Aaron ,   Ra'anana   (11.12.06)
17. moderate Arabs
Noam a ,   jerusalem   (11.12.06)
There never was, not will there ever be a "democratic arab society." There is Turkey, and there were mild caliphates in Spain and southern Eurabia under which science and art flourished, but they are never stable and the mob and the sword are never far behind. The few sane arabs who seek peace should emigrate to the west and live quiet meaningful lives there. The rest will continue their bellicose ways till the comming of the Messiah, or, if their canard of being Canaanite decendants is true, then lets up and at them as the Torah commands: do not leave living one soul
18. I hope noone beleives this guy
al ,   US   (11.13.06)
He is the one who wouldn't get 1% of the vote if he ran. Do you think someone who writes an article in a foreign newspaper asking a foreign country to attack his own country would be appreciated by his people. Now add the fact that this foreign country is Israel.
19. Dear Israeli!
Hassan ,   Syria   (11.13.06)
I totally agree with you. What the Torah is saying is absolutely true. When will this come true? I know it will and I share the same belief with you and so the Chrisians by the way. My Jewish brothers, I am Muslim, believe that this is the last time Jews come to Jerusalem and they will stay till the Judgement Day, right - correct me if I am wrong. Chrisians believe that Jesus is coming soon in order to fight the Armagoddon where Jews and others - the party of the devil - and the Chrisians - the party o God (don't mix it up with that of Lebanon) will fight the battle where Chrisians will defeat them and Chrisianity will prevail. I know this and also read it in The Week, the British magazine. Muslims agree with the Jews that this is the last time Jews come to Jerusalem but there is a little difference between the two beliefs: They are not going to stay, they will be wiped out to the man. It is like the bull, you see, when it comes to the arena. Nobody knows when and how the blow will come but there is one certain thing: the bull is not going to leave the arena ALIVE. I hope none of us is right and the truth is that we will live in peace like brothers. We are cousins at the end of the day and brothers in humanity. That is the best way. If you disagree and you believe in the indestructability of Israel then it is as it follows: you are your own enemy, you forget that fact that nobody ever expected that Rome would vanish, Homer nods, Tatars after destroying Muslims converted to Islam and they have a great part in the Muslim civilisations, and other facts. Read history and don't only live the moment because that is not sensible enough. I know one thing also: you are not evil and you Israelis do that out of good faith just like arabs. There is a mutual hatred but that is because we don't have try to reach out each others. It takes two to tango!
20. Follow up!
Hassan ,   Syria   (11.13.06)
Sorry for the silly grammatical mistakes. I'm just trying to say that I am sick and tired of hearing both parties exchanging hatred. It is gross! Each party is trying to show that he or she is the one that is on the right track.
21. Look who is talking
Arther Dent ,   London, UK   (11.16.06)
Ghadry, a guy who embezelled millions from the Saudi, drove a Ferrari, and build a mansion in DC suburbs with dirty money. This opportunist is now giving us lectures in freedom and democracy. Oh please....
22. This is insane
Syrian Moderate ,   Washington DC   (11.18.06)
This hatred and these racist attacks are sad. The Grand Sheik of Islam around the year 1270 CE wrote: "My Religion is a flock of gazelle in a field, my religion are Monks in a cemetery, my religion are rabbis in a synagogue, my religion is Love." That was Ibn Arabi and that is real Islam. Farid is barking up the wrong tree and all the replies posted by yours readers proves this point.
