1. Thanks for cheering me up
cj ,   chicago and USA   (11.13.06)
I was really worried that James Baker and Nancy Pelosi would give Israel the shaft. Your article, however, has a fatal flaw. It fails to recognize that the Palestians and radical Islam will never accept Israel or Jews. Never failed an opportunity to miss an opportunity should not be Israel's problem. Pushing Israel harder for concessions that will never be enough is delusional and I suggest you reexamine your views which border on self destructive.
2. Peace????
Bernard ,   Chicago USA   (11.13.06)
"Lantos, Emanual and Nancy Pelosi are not Democrats who will easily trade away Israel's advantages even for a permanent peace accord." As you have written, so let it be. Who among Palestinians is to be Israel's peace partner? Hamas, Islamic Jihad, El-Aksa Brigade, ad infinitum -- and their "savior" for the moment, Iran, like Nasser and his ilk, et al. of the past -- whose ideas of a "perma- nent peace" harken to a grave, given their avowed goals of seeking the destruction of Israel and the extermination of the Jews?
3. Not so sure that is good for Israel
Steve ,   USA   (11.13.06)
B"H "That is good for Israel, but not for peace." I am not so sure that it is good for Israel. I think the main interest of Israel is to drive non-domestic Arab goverments out of the Arab territories who are fomenting violence, in interests of undermining local sovereignty. In otherwords, like Syria and Iran are influencing Hisbullah in Lebanon, so are other Arab states influencing resistance groups in the Arab occupied territories to fire missles at Sderot. Those Kassam missile fires are driving the IDF response, as those in Sderot demand adequate protection against civilian terrorist attack. The civilian causualties are what I dislike. Every war has them, but moving toward not peace on the basis of giving land to other regimes but rather peace based on real security I think will help reduce civilian casualties. That is what we are all wanting, right: reduced civilian casualties. This is what needs to be worked towards in a really sensible manner.
4. Democrats not good for PA
ger ,   Raanana, Israel   (11.13.06)
Twist it any way you like, but Clinton placed the blame for the failure of his Camp David initiative squarely on Arafat, not on "extremist Israelis". If Arafat had kept his promise to Clinton (and if pigs could fly), the Palestinians would be more than half way towards the creation of a state.
5. nothing wrong with "one-sided policies" when opposing terror
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (11.13.06)
actually, the world could use more "one-sided policies" like that. israel has already made concessions, now it is the turn of the palestinians to start conceding. like ray says, it needs to be based on "compromise" (but i won't believe it until i see the palestinians actually compromise on ANYTHING). who knows? maybe muslims and people like ray will learn a little personal responsibility and start fixing their own problems, instead of blaming everyone else for what they do. thank you democrats for calling a spade a spade, and a terrorist a terrorist!
6. Get lost Ray
James Just ,   San Francisco USA   (11.13.06)
You are a third tier propagandist for the PLO, who deliberately ignores historical fact to misrepresent the political reality of the Americans to the Israeli audience. The US government supports the subordination of the State of Israel to the Arab agenda, but- the American people support Israel. Your job as a third tier PLO propagandist is to neutralize that American support for Israel. So get lost Mr Ray, its not gonna work, and by-the-way, why does Ynet give PLO propagandists a stage to mouse their anti-Israel views couched in moderate American jargon? You would think Ynet would know better, guess the Jews aren't that smart eh? I need a job Ynet.
7. good article, Ray
Michael ,   Seattle, WA   (11.13.06)
My hopes for this new leadership are a little closer to home tho.
8. Ray passes the buck
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (11.13.06)
Both Democrats and Republicans favor Israel because that it was any objective party would do. While an objective analysis of the situation might have lead Ray to conclude that both Democrats and Republicans agree that Israel has done enough for peace and that the Arabs have done almost nothing, Ray instead refuses to challenge the Arabs on their desire to erradicate Israel. Ray takes the approach that teh whole world is evil except for the Palestinians. That is probably because the modern, western, moderate Ray himself is among those that do not believe that Israel has a "natural" right to exist. The proof is in his writing that Clinton "negated the rights of Palestinian refugees without clearly defining what they would get for their dispossession." Ray means that the Palestinians have a "right" to overrun Israel with a majority of Palestinians and that giving that up is something the Palestinians needs to do only if they get something back. If the Palestinians have a natural "right" to return then Israel does not have the natural "right" to exist. The two rights cannot exist simultaneously. Any Arab that tells you that the "refugee" issue needs to be negotiated does not believe in Israel's natural right to exist. Hence, Ray does not believe Israel has a right to exist. Ray is willing to allow an Israel to exist, though, under certain conditions, but not because Israel has such a right but only because of facts on the ground. The Arabs have never wanted anything less than the complete erradication of Israel. While they cannot be condemed for wanting this, Israel and the world needs to act accordingly.
9. There are no Israeli concessions that would lead to peace.
Richard James ,   NY, USA   (11.13.06)
It's interesting that Israel's enemies are always looking to have others "FORCE Israel" (the expression they use repeatedly) to give the Paleos what they want, as if this is the answer to peace. Hamas and Fatah openly say that such forced concessions would only put them in a better position to destroy Israel. It's the only reason they ask for such things. The Paleos could have a nice life for themselves if they would give up murder and mayhem. Asking the Paleos to give up murder as a hobby is like asking them to cut out their own hearts, though. It's simply not possible for them to be willing to end their endless love for murder. No peace deal is possible between Israel and the Paleos. None whatsoever. I'm incredibly thankful that the Democrats seem to know this, too.
10. Finally some good news!
Chris ,   Boston   (11.13.06)
11. Ray, the future of the PA is up to you, not the US (END)

Adam ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.13.06)
The settlements were built on empty land. RAY IS A LIAR
14. They No Friend Of Israel
David ,   Marietta USA   (11.13.06)
The Democrats of today in general, and the "Liberals" in particular are no friend of Israel. The Jews of NY and Florida are living in an imaginary world of the 1930s and 1940s, which has no bearing on todays political landscape. Remember, it was Reagan who said "boys will be boys" after the Osirac attack; it was George W Bush who has provided more aid and support for Israel than any other administration, and it was Hillary Clinton who publicly kissed Shura Arafat, Yassir's so called "wife". And that is just the surface. Last week's election in the US is not good news for Israel, and unless the American conservative movement can get its act together, Israel could be in very big trouble for many years to come.
15. I agree with Ray!
Mark ,   USA   (11.13.06)
What did they specifically do to bring peace? Whay steps were taken? None
16. oh common Ray
hanina ,   governator country   (11.13.06)
if your relatives decided to sweep streets, plant flowers and bake cookies, their 'suffering' would change in a minute. Admit it, they're bad. Hey, I got bad relatives. The difference is I don't invite them over cause they don't make a pill big enough to handle my aggravation.
17. Ray, there's nothing funny about hamas and the taliban
aaron ,   ra'anana   (11.13.06)

18. Republicans & Democrats fully controlled by Jewish lobby
Jean ,   Dallas   (11.13.06)
Reps & Demos won't change their mideast madness untill Americans understand how destructive US mideast policy has been to America and American and in favor of Israel.
19. What a moron: "force a pro-Israel compromise....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (11.14.06)
down the throats of Palestinians?" What a load of horseshit. Its only pro-Israel because it required your war-maker Arafat to give up the dream of eliminating the Jewish state. All you know how to do is demand concessions. Not once do I hear compromise on Palestinian side. You make me sick.
20. #18 I agree with you and Ray
Dawood ,   Jerusalem, Palestine   (11.14.06)
There is no difference between both parties when it comes to the Middle east policies, which is completely designed by right wing Israelis, how do explain that the vast majority of the current house voted many times in favour of Israel and only the president stopped them from doing more harm to the US image, when they vetoed the last UN resolution, the claim was it was biased, so all the word is biased except US and Israel. On the other hand, when they started the war in Iraq all the word is stupid except US and Israel.
21. #13,,HE DOESNT HAVE TO BE A LIAR

27. #20 Jake: Wash. should serve US interests before Israel's
jean ,   usa   (11.14.06)
It is the first time in history that a democracy such as ours lies to its people in order to advance the interests of another country (Israel) at the expense of its own citizens. What the hell in the world would the US gain from shielding Jewish terror against Muslim women & children in Gaza by using its veto at the UN and further infuriate hundreds of millions of Muslims with who we have a lot of interest, especially at a time we should be reaching out to them?
28. To Jean............
