The Palestinians didn't sign an agreement because the Arab League was seen by them, and saw itself, as the interlocuter for the Palestinians. I hardly think that you could compare Noam Chomsky with an interlocuter for Israel. As far as "learning history", the Palestinian link to this land is very, very speculative and is made by those who tendentiously believe, with very, very little proof, that Palestinians are descendants of Jews (in which case the point Jews make about themselves is stronger in any case) or that they are descendants of Canaanites. The only source of this view is one minor one, accepted by nobody but Palestinians, that was laughed out of scholarly circles in the early 1900's. To believe it is like believing in a flat earth, regardless of all the evidence. There are however compelling theories that Jews are actually descendants from Caananites, and that the biblical accounts were actually descriptions of internecine Caananite wars. This does not square well with the Torah account obviously, since Caananites were descendants of Ham and Jews (as well as Arabs) were descendants of Shem. But one thing is for sure, calling Palestinians "ancient" his just plain rediculous on all accounts. Talk about "wishful thinking"!!!! As far as your last paragraph regarding garrisons of colonialists and what not, your advice is more appropriately followed by Palestinians and the Arab garrisons that accompanied the Arab League in its attempt to undermine the historic return of Jews to their homeland.

The irony of life: an amerikan preaching moral here; Ha!

I don't understand the legal ramifications of your article, but if Isreal continues to kill Palestinans, they will not " feel" included in Isreal, no matter what political rights they have. You know in America we have a saying: " These rights are bestowed by our Creator, life liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Jews have a right not subject to the progroms of the past. we need to secure that right and I am thankfull that Isreal is strong enough to secure that right through it armaments. But consensus building is also strength and I do not see that much in Isreal. We have had a problem in the US with the so called 'religious right.' They've molded Bushh and his mid east policy and now we are stuck for a long time. Please, don't let the orthodox Jews ruin Isreal for the rest of us.

First understand that Israel did not annex the West Bank or Gaza. Palestinians are not entitled to the rights of Israelis, and are not meant to be allowed to feel "included" in Israel. If you are referring to Arabs living in Israel, I'll ask a question. How many times did police shoot and kill blacks who were involved in crimes in America? I'd bet you 10:1 that proportionatly far fewer Arabs are denied "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" in israel as a population percentage than American blacks are in the US. Look at how many blacks are in America's prisons, too, and compare that to the percentage of prisoners in Israeli jails are Arabs. By those standards, no American should be preaching to us. These matters are far more complex than you make it - I'm not claiming that my comparison is even relevant, and a lot of other things explain why things are they way they are in the US and Israel. For this eason, your comparison is out of place. It means nothing and does nothing other than allow yourself to give ethics lessons as though your some sort of expert because you are American, especially if you are an American Jew. Especially the idiotic comment that "orthodox jews" are ruining Israel "for the rest of us". "Us"? Utter, complete nonsense. You should realize that the power of the right in Israel, which it no longer has by the way, was never because of the "religious". It was because the religious formed alliances with secular hawks, who far outnumbered them, the sorts of people who once counted secular Jews like Ariel Sharon in their ranks. I'm sorry to be so blunt, Mark, but it pisses me off to so many people think they understand what is going on here and feel they can offer advice because they are part of a society that they perceive is superior to ours. It smacks of the kind of arrogance that we are always blamed for. Do not do unto others that which you would not have them do to you.

37. Arab happiness (Mark)
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (12.06.06)
Nothing would give the Arabs more happiness than to deprive Israelis of their life and liberty. And if that sounds harsh you know now why theys say war is hell. And yes what is going on right now between Israelis and Arabs is war: A war that started in 1967 and never really ended. Just because liberals n the U.S., Europe, and Israel think that war doesn't exist doesn't mean the Arabs think so. The Arabs think they are at war with Israel, say they are at war wih Israel, and act as though they are at war with Israel, and, to slightly misqute Cicero, liberties are silent in times of war.

Rob basically does precisely what this article says the Arabs of Israel should not do. So Rob, when are you returning to England or Saudi Arabia, or Germany or wherever your ancestors came from, and giving your home and physical assets to the local Native Americans? Israeli Jews have as much right to Israel as Americans have to the USA. Probably more, since I don't recall any source (let alone a bible)indicating that G_d promised America to anyone, or any documentation of a 2 millenia long unbroken European, African and Hispanic presence in and connection to the Americas. And Americans are as likely as Israelis to do as you suggest. As for not having the power to stay there in the long run, that's a peculiar thing to say about a country that's perpetually rumored and assumed to have a sizeable nuclear arsenal. There aren't many reasons that would justify using such weapons, but one would be to destroy a world that decides it doesn't have room for a Jewish state in the Land of Israel.
40. Jul, Rob, and my opinion on the Israeli-Arab
Rudy ,   Miami, Florida, USA   (11.28.07)
Jul that itself was pretty mean, as you cant judge a book by its cover, or a country by its president Rob, you yourself are wrong and these people made good points. when do you intend to return the land to the native americans? why should Israel return the land to the Arabs? after all every country in the world, more or less, has land it took from other countries. why not force them to do the same? wat you are saying just makes no sense to me. because i no that i dont intend to give up my backyard to the cherokees.and for some reason they cant hold Israel in their power, even if they were attacked by Egypt and Syria's combined powers in the Yom Kippur War and still won? Israel was established as a state for the Jewish people who faced discrimination throughout many years, the last straw was the death of 6 million Jews within myabe 4 or 6 years. Israel is supposed to be the place where they can be safe from discrimination. and now the arabs who have 22 other countries to choose from want to settle here as they're newest addition? i can see from their point of view that this is stealing their land, but why cant they see from our point of view that this is getting back what used to be ours in the first place. Arabs in Israel have themselves said that they live in better conditions in Israel than in the Arab countries that are controlled by their own people. Rob please think next time before you write so you wont sound somewhat hypocritical and if you think im wrong please respond since after all i am only 14 years old and might very well be. but convincing me should be pretty hard.
