1. Furthermore, there is more to this than what ynet states
(12.14.06)
Trust me, ynet is full of half truths, outright lies and the rest.
2. Conversions
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (12.14.06)
The Law of return needs to be ammended first. leave the non - jews in their countries of origin, and they'll be saved from all the hardships that will await them in Israel as non jews
3. This will ban fake Jews from coming, if you are legimate
David ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (12.13.06)
you can convert inside Israel and thus gain all the benefits, this is to block future calamities like the influx of nonJews from Russia and the "black hebrews". Nobody said being a convert is easy but since you accepted that you wanted to be Jewish, you know already what it entails.
4. Even if its not passed today or next year, it will be passed
(12.13.06)
in the future The Rule of Return MUST be changed it.
5. Further distancing from Diaspora
Shalit ,   Jerusalem   (12.14.06)
This will drive Jews in the Diaspora even further away from support of Isreal and desire to return. We have already insulted all rabbis outside fo israel in the rabbis iside Israel saying their conversions aren't valid. now we want to say those who converted can't return. What is this about
6. Chief Bottle Washers...
(12.14.06)
About the last thing Israel needs is a bunch of highly politicized rabbis, like their chief bottle washers, deciding on who should be Jewish or who should not be Jewish. The Orthodox rabbinate have pretty much made a mockery of the conversion processes basing themselves on rather arcane medieval dictates which stemmed from such places as the Vatican. Therefore, if Israel is to live and breathe and survive and grow it is absolutely essential that all conversions performed by mainstream Jewish organizations, including Conservative and Reform, be honoured. Israel's chief rabbis no longer speak for all of Judaism.
7. no-name (1), care to elaborate?
sk ,   USA   (12.14.06)
8. #5 If the drive for aliyah in a convert is there
(12.14.06)
One will still be able to become a citizen of Israel and gain all the benefits of being a Oleh. It will just take a little harder, but nobody said being Jewish was easy. Jews of the Diaspora will continue to be acknowledged under the new Right of Return so it will be insignificant for most likely 90+% of the Jewish American population.
9. Israeli recognition of conversion should be less restrictive
Marc Dubey ,   Chicago, USA   (12.14.06)
The new conversion amendment is a bad idea. The reality is there are millions of Jews and who wouldn’t qualify as Jews under a strict reading of Halacha but Rabbi Shlomo Amar is misreading history. He should be saying “Whomever helps build the Third Temple will be as those who stood at Sinai.” This is a time of building; let the religious people worry about getting the practice right when there are students. It is a contradiction to need more Israelis and to deny those who earnestly tie themselves to the Jewish people the right of return because they are not yet Israelis.
10. No matter what else this is, it is CERTAINLY a power grab.
sk ,   USA   (12.14.06)
"Rabbi Amar also suggested amending Israel’s chief rabbinate law. Such an amendment would let the chief rabbinate deliberate the conversion issue, as he explained: 'There is the need to set the chief rabbinate’s authority by law on conversion matters.'" In other words, the rabbinate, which already has obtained quasi-legal authority on such matters, now wants more authority and wants this authority put into statute. Legality is better than quasi-legality, but perhaps the rabbinate should have no such authority whatsoever. I await a Haredi leader who loves all Jews and advocates for all of them.
11. black hebrews?
Ben Shokaid ,   Jersey City, USA   (12.14.06)
Who are the black hebrews you mentioned here and what, if there is any, is there connection with non-jews from russia?
12. A radical zionist's opinion in support of convetees
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (12.14.06)
One would be hard-pressed to find a more patriotic, nationalistic, and right-wing Jew than me, and thoise of you who have read my past posts on this site will know this. However this is perhaps the only issue on the Israeli political horizon on which I agree with the Liberals. I mean think about it, the reason why Judaism is so small and weak and Christianity and Islam are by comparison so widespread and powerful is because over their histories Islam and Christianity have had massive missionry and force conversion efforts, while Jewshave done nothing but refject converts. But demogaphics aside, why shouldn't those who share our values and have elected to join our faith and our cause in good faith and of their own free will be denied te benifits of other Jews. Many people who willingly convert to Judaism have a much deeper respect for Jewish values and the Jewish nation than many who were born jews (need I present a list?). Why should we not accept them with the samewarmth and goodwill that hey have embraced us?
13. Its about QUALITY not QUANTITY
Michael ,   Haifa   (12.14.06)
14. ONE TORAH - ONE LAW
LEE ,   NY, USA   (12.14.06)
I'm sure I'm disappointing many of these readers, but the fact is and will always be that the Torah from Sinai is our only Torah and its commandments will never change, regardless of how "arcane" they look, regardless of who it insults or doesn't insult, regardless of how many people it attracts, and regardless of anything one might hold against it. Its not a popularity contest or a question of numbers. The fact is that the majority of people you’ll find on these talkbacks that rally against the Torah and its representatives, our holy Rabbis, don’t keep even the basic commandments (kashrut, Shabbat, nida, etc.) And this is exactly why they rally against anything that has the vestige of authentic Judaism. You’ll find that if you engage them on serious Torah issues, if you try to challenge them on actual Torah, they know very little and will either shy away or insult you in order to change the subject. Any of these “power hungry” Rabbis, as well as most people who have sat down to study the Torah, would make intellectual mince meat out of most of these pathetic talkbackers who rally senselessly against it. The truth is that many of them are dying of guilt and shame and in order to alleviate these feelings they attack the representatives of the law, and therefore indirectly attack the Lawgiver himself. They make ignorant statement such as #6’s comment: “The Orthodox rabbinate have pretty much made a mockery of the conversion processes basing themselves on rather arcane medieval dictates which stemmed from such places as the Vatican.” You don’t need any Torah knowledge to know that the laws of conversion were set way before the Vatican or Christianity ever stepped on the world stage. But except for disappointing the hopeful observant Jew, these people’s statements won’t change a single thing. We’ve seen them through history in many forms and they’ve all withered away into assimilation or annihilation, unfortunately dragging many along with them. Yes, they’ll still rear their heads ever so often, and the “Zionistic” ideologies will lengthen their stay, but at the end of it all they’ll find themselves wishing they were on the other side of history with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, and the other “power hungry” faithful Jews.
15. exclude fake Jews
(12.14.06)
the jewish people are constantly weakened by the fake Jews and other Jews who only claim judaism to receive the benefits that it brings even though they have no genuine connection to Judaism or Israel.
16. This law is racist
Bechor   (12.14.06)
Last time, I said I supported this law because I did not know what the effects it would have on converts would be. This law is racist, and is contrary to Judaism itself. I agree that all conversions should be Orthodox, but converts are just as Jewish as any of us born Jewish. This law is disgraceful, and so is this "Rabbi."
17. The truth is
Vitaliy ,   NJ, USA   (12.14.06)
this law wants to circumvent the courtcases that permitted Reform and Conservative converts to be allowed into Israel. If rabbi Amar gets it through Knesset, the religious establishment will be in charge of dealing with converts inside of Israel.
18. AND WHAT"S WRONG WITH THE QUALITY OF THOSE CHOSING JUDAISM?
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (12.14.06)
19. Jews for Jesus MUST BE ALLOWED TO MAKE ALIYAH
sk ,   USA   (12.14.06)
You can still be Jewish and believe in Christ
20. right of return
david ,   israel   (12.14.06)
if a person converts through an orthodox recognised rabbinate, why shouldnt the person be allowed to make aliyah? he/she is a full jew!! rabbi amor should stick to his group of sephardim and take care of them...and not talk in matters where they are not knowledgable enough...
21. #10 He would be a hypocrit if he accepted faires
Michael ,   Haifa   (12.14.06)
It says in the TORAH which was given by the Almighty that homosexuality is forbidden, His Law is Perfect thus morality and anything else must be adhered to His Perfect Laws. Thats what Judaism as a civilization stands for. PS: Where do you get your Rabbinate information from ynet? Your as much of the "enemy" as Mazuz and Meretz is.
22. #11 Here
(12.14.06)
http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/Society_&_Culture/Black_Hebrews.html This has NO relation to Ethopians or others the term "black hebrews" is equated with those messianic people you see in NYC saying they are the lost tribe, they live in Israel too ugh.
23. What ???
Matt ,   London   (12.14.06)
So now they try to change the law? In a religion where any add to the jewish faith is a bonus, they try and make life difficult? my fiance is converting and this attitude will make me think twice whether i want to belong in a religion where converting to Judaism make you 'half' a jew ... If the orthodox jews keep controling Israeli issues, not only I won't come back, but I will become a very negative ambassedor to Israel which I love. It would be like a slap in my face.
24. (19) is not me, obviously....
sk ,   USA   (12.14.06)
My question is how ANYONE could have recommended this talkback.
25. Boo Woo to Reform, Conserv's!
Yonatan Koss ,   Chi Town, OR USA   (12.14.06)
Some people even believe that a man named Jesus changed the Laws of Torah, with the first actual Reform Church. Then 2,000 years later a group in Germany denounced temple sacrifices, Memzerut, Mikvah and so many other things. They even stated in 1845 that Germany was the new Zion! It was the reform movement! Is it any wonder Hashem poured out Fury of the Shoah upon the Reform movement that started in Hamburg Germany where they built the first reform temple saying that there would never be a temple in Israel again! The reform movement is not a Jewish religion it is a new humanitarian religion based on some Hebrew laws but mostly the dictates of men only rejecting Hashem’s laws he gave forever! Conservative opted to keep more mitzvoth’s but did away with many like reform. Orthodox Rabbi’s will not allow non-Jews who have had two week conversions inside Israel as true Jews, because they are not according to tradition Jewish law. If you need to belong to a Reform Shul you already made the choice to denounce Israel’s policies through the Reform committee mandates! Gays and Lesbos in a shul? Don’t be ridiculous! Orthodox follows Papal rulings? Yeah, the Pope loves Jews and “Never” called for Jews to die, get real people! Israel is not for non Jews like reform and Conservative!
26. Michael (21) the fairy.
sk ,   USA   (12.14.06)
"21. #10 He would be a hypocrit if he accepted faires" It says in the TORAH which was given by the Almighty that homosexuality is forbidden, His Law is Perfect thus morality and anything else must be adhered to His Perfect Laws. Thats what Judaism as a civilization stands for." If you're so immersed in TORAH, G-d's own words, how could you be such a vulgar and ignorant creep? Even an atheist must admit the magnificence of the Pentateuch (at least). But you seem not to have profited by it. You are not even fully literate, as can be seen by your failure to understand possessives and contractions. "PS: Where do you get your Rabbinate information from ynet? Your as much of the "enemy" as Mazuz and Meretz is." You need to insert a comma before "ynet." You mean "You're," not "Your." Even doctrinally you're an ignoramus. I cannot be an ENEMY, as I am a Jew (both sides, as far back as anyone can tell). I can only be an ADVERSARY. However, someone who is gay is not magically even an adversary, any more than someone who desecrates Shabbot is necessarily an adversary. I, personally, have savagely criticized Mazuz and Meretz regularly. But you, sweet Michael, are too stupid and vulgar to understand any of this. In your stupidity and your vulgarity, you disgrace G-d.
27. Rejection of Orthodox Converts is Rejection of Torah
Yitzi ,   Jerusalem   (12.14.06)
The torah states that "You shall love the widow, the orphan and the convert." How is it that this Rabbi can take upon himself to reject the rights of an Orthodox Convert who converted Al Pe Halacka?
28. SHAMEFULL RABBINET IN ISRAEL.
REUVEN ,   USA   (12.14.06)
GOD SAVE US FROM THEM AND THE ISRAELI GOVERMENT OF OLMERT.
29. they obviously have too much time on
The more the ,   merrier   (12.14.06)
their hands..there are too many rabbis walking around with nothing to do and imposing their ancient laws on the rest of us. Judaism is a state of mind, and if u were a holocaust survivor it was a death sentence..hence we lost a lot of jews to conversion and intermarriage. I am not suprised to be honest..the draconian laws that we have the paperwork the rules applied for getting a divorce all make being a Jew an imposition rather than something to be joyous about. I dont need some beared man telling me whether I am a Jew or not, and i feel that is anyone is mad enuf to convert to Judaism give him credit..who else wud put up with this? Christians, muslims convert people left and right and increase in numbers, whilst we are dimishing thru old age, war, and intermarriage and yet we still find time to quibble...its not abt quality its about quantity we are not in a position to be so elitist and selective..we should be grateful for each person who decides that Judaism is for them and welcome them into our Balagan with open arms.
30. Not seeing forest for the trees
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (12.14.06)
As most postings, all recent Jewish polls - and Orthodox rabbis - have acknowledged, 95+% of the "born-Jew" community has become estranged from Torah and is a self-extinguishing wick, a Pishtah Keihah (Yeshayahu 42.1-4) -- the name of my book laying out a (perhaps the only) logical solution. Anyone who wears blinders distracting them to try "fixing" this real problem by blaming it on a 1 in 10,000 convert in the community is tragically delusional, allowing the wick to continue self-extinguishing. Even if the convert was the worst possible, he or she has neglible effect on the overall community. Ah, but anything to blameshift away from taking responsibility for our own internal problems.
