1. The author is wrong
Alex ,   LA, USA   (12.17.06)
May be he is good for Kadima but he is very bad for Jews. Already many Left-wing organization support the the conference to "find the truth". Kerry is going to Taheran to meet their prez. Soon other left-wingers will go. The Jews look weak and Iran looks strong and eberyone likes strong people ("you make peace with the enemy not friend" left-wingers say). Soon you will see post-Zionists in Taheran.
3. Good for Israel? Only if the World disagrees with Iran's aim
AK   (12.17.06)
to eradicate Israel. Honestly, I cannot see the 'World' coming to Israel's aid, just the opposite is true. But I have no doubt that should the atomic bomb explode in Tel Aviv, all the ' righteous' of this world will have no problem to come together sixty years later to lay another wreath and utter some other empty platitudes under another Holocaust Memorial. The only 'sympathy' for the Jews is reserved strictly for dead Jews --if that. Now, can you consider this to be good for the Jews and for Israel? In the end Israel will have to act on its own and act decisively -- not the Lebanon type of the war. The enemy has to be 100% dead -- all of them.
4. Real Genius:
mikem ,   New York, US   (12.17.06)
While you count your political "wins" from the conference, keep in mind that 1) Iran is building nukes aimed straight for you and will likely not be stopped, 2) the world still views Israel in an extremely negative light thanks to the stupid and arrogant Israeli public affairs office (how much political capital has Israel gained from the post-disengagement Qasam firing and Shalit capture? Way to capitalize there), 3) the next time the IDF accidentally kills someone all of the recent gains will dissappear. This is a classic leftist spin of the facts and reality. The point on the intelligence gathering on Iran's motivation is silly...Wow, gee, we now know Iran really hates Israel, because 2 weeks ago were debating that. And if you meant that Israel now has a legitimate right to attack Iran first---wake up---it's not happening anyway in an Olmert, Halutz government. Stop trying to make other countries feel sympathy for Israel. They never have and never will. The "let's convince them to like us" theory failed in Oslo and especially in the Gaza pullout. The world likes Israel less than 10yrs ago and security is worse. So stop rejoicing that the world is temprarily sympathizing with you for Iran and get back to dealing with the real problem at hand---your survival!
5. Alex, LA- Right on the facts, wrong conclusion.
Alexander ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (12.17.06)
Yes, there are left-wing organizations voicing support for the Holocaust denial conference. Yes, Kerry goes to Teheran. But the public watches, and what do they see? They see these left-wing organizations endorsing what is essentially a neo-Nazi idea. They see Kerry shaking hands with a Hitler wannabe. That's exactly what the author meant when he said "Ahmadinejad is causing them damage"- the enemies of Israel now have only two options- stick by Ahmadniejad and appear as the best friends of the neo-Nazis- or bite the bullet and side with Israel.
6. To Alex
Stan ,   U.S.   (12.17.06)
Left Wing ?? You mean like David Duke? It is not the left or right that supports such conferences, it is the fanatics The author does not understand that it does not matter what Israel does. Israel gets attacked by rockets in Sderot on almost a daily basis. That should be enough to create a world wide cheering section for the response to the attacks. Instead Israel is blamed for the attacks as part of the ever elusive "cycle of violence." Using the author's logic, why not just allow suicide bombers into the country. It would aid world opinion of Israel. Stan
7. But Hitler didn't have Nukes my friend...
mikem ,   New York, US   (12.17.06)
You are right that countries will feel compelled to side with Israel so long as Iran appears Nazi-like...but how does that translate to any meaningful change in the field (i.e. how does it stop Iran's nukes?)....Once Iran has nukes countries will be VERY afraid to totally side with Israel. The analogy to Hitler breaks down when you add nukes to the equation. Countries will always protect their own interests over Israel's....it pains me to see this blind overeliance by Israelis on their "friends" helping them out. After Lebanon, even the US is starting to question Israel's strategic importance.
8. Well said Stan, it troubles me that
mikem ,   New York, US   (12.17.06)
the reality doses on these talkbacks always come from people in the US. The Israelis (especially the left) just don't seem to get how poor their Public Relations is. Bibi should be on CNN/Fox/MSNBC every time a Qasam is fired and remind the world that 1) Israel pulled out of Gaza, and 2) Qasams and kidnappings didn't stop. Israelis think arrogantly that Americans closely follow Israel's day to day happenings. They dont. They'll dedicate 30 seconds of their day to listening to mideast news and on that they form an opinion that affects polticians and world policy. So the PR message must be consistent and simple to cater to the average person. Even when Israelis die it doesn't make the news here. Half of the Israelis who do come on TV can't speak a word of English.
9. The author is obviously, and I mean obviously, wrong.
sk ,   USA   (12.17.06)
Every time Ahmadinijad threatens Israel or does something obviously wildly anti-Semitic (like this conference) without Israel treating Iran like the enemy it is (preferably with a humiliating military strike directly at Teheren, to show how easily Israel could do it), Israel's credibility (its deterrent) is lessened. Israel wouldn't even have to strike Iran directly. If it had really waged a war on Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran would have been humiliated and would have lost one front in a future war against Israel. That Yossi Ben Ari served in any position other than dog catcher is amazing. That he perpetuates the confusion of ordinary Israelis with articles like this is an outrage.
10. Like saying in the 1930's that Hitler is good for the Jews
Sarah Davidson ,   Jerusalem   (12.17.06)
That would be like saying that because Hitler said things which were so outrageous and crazy the world would see what a nut he was, pity the Jews and take immediate action to stop him. Sadly, that was not the case then, and that is clearly not the case now either.
11. P.S.: the US should do the same thing ...
sk ,   USA   (12.17.06)
When Iranians say "death to America," and we do nothing, we also lessen our own deterrence. We have done this for years regarding N. Korea, which is no doubt why Iranian leaders think they can go nuclear. The fact is, though, that the US could not be wiped out with one bomb and can project force anywhere in the world. The US has more wiggle room to do the wrong thing until finally, having tried every wrong thing, it does the right thing.
12. Illogical, false hope
sandgroper ,   Australia   (12.17.06)
It is often constructive to try to make the best of a bad situation, but it can be very dangerous to make logical errors in strategic planning, and to foster a false sense of security. It is right to recognise the importance of the PR war, but "thanking" a genocidal enemy like Ahmedinejad is very wrong. His "twisted attitude to Israel" is obvious to friends of israel, but there is plenty of other obvious evidence of the justice of Israel's cause, which is ignored by global media and by uninformed Israel bashers. Ahmedinejad will turn more unaffiliated and uninformed people against Israel. He gives a platform to rabid anti-Semites and supports them in their hateful mission of spreading their poison. And he openly plolts and schemes and works to implement another Holocaust. Ahmendinejad needs to be eliminated, not thanked.
13. Arafat and Iran
Jim ,   Chicago   (12.17.06)
As long as Arafat was in Tunisia, the world supported Israel. As soon as Rabin invited him into Israel everything changed. Clinton, Carter, France, England decided that Israel will vanish soon and Arafat became ahero. Because of guys like the author Israel lost 1500 Jews. Intelligence no, dog catcher yes.
14. Thr Iranian leader gives the Heroin addict,
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (12.17.06)
(Anti Semites), a little Heroin to feed their habit. After feeding them the message long enough, and getting them hooked on the message....He will attack the country of Israel with their blessing. Thr Heroin addict knows what they are doing is probably wrong. But another dose of Heroin feels so right. So in the end....when the Iranian leader lies enough to the world about the Jews......and gets the worlds hatred of the Jews to a boil.....he will then strike with the worlds blessing. It's much easier killing 6 million Jews rather than doing without gasoline for the worlds vehicles. And the bearded Jew in the photo....will be pushing the corpses into the kiln.
15. nonukes
toni ,   sabme   (12.17.06)
hitler did not have nukes . but he did have dedicated muslims in the ss. the facts are there to see now its time to face the truth and turn the corner. we have seen extreem religious actions before in history. why do we hyde from it now. but whatever islam the religion of peace will mlook to there quran and fix the problems of there exteemism? not cause if they look to far back they may find the extreemist are more muslim then thm.
16. SCOOP: Ahmedinijad sorry for denying the holocaust ...
Lulu ,   TLV   (12.18.06)
He promised he won't deny the next one. (Dixit: Heretz neederet, Friday, 16.12.06, Second Channel) Nothing as funny as Israeli TV laughing about itself. :)
17. Ahmedinajad respect the Jews believers
1.5 Billion Muslims   (12.18.06)
but he does not want , the jew to walk over other people like Palastinian . Reality Check , World
18. Ahmadabad solution
alan ,   Kodiak Alaska   (12.18.06)
Here is the final solution for Ahmad the Bad. A Jewish comedy fest featuring the world's comedians coming to tinsel town to mock El-Fhurer. All gags about the guy can be collated and dopped over Tehran by B-1 delivery service.
19. Leaders who inflame hatred are NEVER good for Jews
Zvi ,   USA   (12.18.06)
20. ANTI-SEMITISM IS NEVER GOOD FOR JEWS!
DEBRA ,   USA   (12.18.06)
21. Stupidest article ever written because PEOPLE HATE JEWS
Adam ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.18.06)
22. Lessons from History
Ilana   (12.18.06)
No one can be called "good" for Jews. Jews have to act alone for their survival because even God is not trustworthy.
23. disturbing
Gedalia ,   Perth, Australia   (12.18.06)
I find this viewpoint from a senior intelligence strategist troubling. We do not need to garner world sympathy due to the rantings of a madman. We should hold our ethical position with pride, irrespective of Armadinejad and co. If we need to be reduced to this in order to use it as precursor for a conversation with Italy (a diplomatic icebreaker of sorts) then we are in more trouble than we realise. We should stand proudly in front of Israels ethos on its own merit, and not rely on the sympathy of Iranian Holocaust revisionism in order to deliver the platform be heard. We can do without this defeatist logic.
24. Now look who's always fishing for pity.
Libneniyyeh ,   Lebanon   (12.18.06)
Well, if it happened it happened, why the big fuss over someone denying it? You should have more self-confidence
25. #24, Where's your confidence when your prophet is insulted?
Michael ,   Israel   (12.18.06)
If an infidel so much as questions Muhammed, you kidnap, behead and burn down embassies. Jews insist that the memory of the six million who perished should never be forgotten. We won't go around blowing up Iranian embassies because we are offended. But we will certainly speak out against people who desecrate the memory of those who were murdered by the nazis.
26. Typical Ilana, and all you atheists whenever
Bush ,   USA   (12.18.06)
Israel wins a war like the 6 day war with open miracles proven and testified by so many it must be the IDF at their best. But if G-d forbid a holocaust occurs or another disaster on Jews it must be G-d is not trustworthy. Just from the fact that the IDF or IAF recently kept on missing their targets and killing innocent women and children proves that the IDF really have no power whatsoever if G-d does not direct their missiles Nobody wins wars like the Jews and nobody loses wars like Jews that is what history teaches us.
27. Rethink needed
sandgroper ,   Australia   (12.18.06)
Ben Ari's frivolous approach to an existential threat to Klal Yisrael is clearly not acceptable to most readers. The weight of criticism in Talkback to this article, suggests that Yossi Ben Ari needs to rethink his position and publish a sequel.
28. "Goodwill" Won't Stop Nuclear Bombs
Ken ,   NYC   (12.19.06)
Let's say the author is right and Iran's wacko president is increasing goodwill for ISrael by his extremist statements and Holocaust denying. That doesn't make him "good for Israel". Hitler made many extremist statements against Jews and held many anti-Semitic conferences also. Goodwill for Israel is seldom translated into action. It's mostly just words. And words won't protect Israel from Iran's nuclear weapons. Iran's nuclear capacity must be destroyed. And that can only be accomplished by military action. Of this, there is no doubt whatsoever.
29. Don't worry, he is on his way out.
lino ,   Canfield   (12.19.06)
The recent elections make it obvious. His insane ranting has embarrassed the mullahs and run whatever bit of credibility they had into the ground. He has made Iran the laughing stock of the world. Who could possibly take a country seriously that has made a maniac like that their front man? It won't be long and he will be out--one way or another.
