Whether Israel thinks Assad's over-tures are true or false is irrelevant. The logical response is to have Assad put up or shut up. If Assad puts up and it unreasonable, then you know he is not genuine. If Assad puts up and is reasonable, then the sky is the limit. In the end, Israel has nothing to lose by listening. When Ehud Barak spoke to the Syrians, were Syrians not supporting terrorism or taking care of their interests in Lebanon, Iran and elsewhere? Barak made the decision that what Syrians were offering was not worth it and life goes on. Olmert seems less afraid of going to war as in Lebanon than in making peace.

Given HER history , she will have documents pre-signed and ready to roll with a full or partial surrender of the Golan. This is their M.O. and there is nothing in their character structure that has changed for anyone to think otherwise. All this TOUGH talk is just designed (like everything Olmert & Livni said in the past) to "soften" the blow to the voters. I think it might help, Michael, if you tell President Assad to invite Ehud Olmert to come to Syria or if Assad offers to come to Israel (even better). Israelis are very skeptical of Syria's intentions.

he's right, the people of Israel need to see action, talk is cheap. Asad needs to address our fears and suspitions, and he knows what they are. but first and foremost, he should offer to return the remains of Eli Cohen, as a good will gesture. this will be a good point to start from.
