31. jesus is a jew, and he said his kingdom is not of this world
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (12.25.06)
revise history all you want, the facts will never change. yasser arafat is the best representative of the palestinian situation since he was born in egypt and refused to give up terrorism for peace.
32. RELIGION CONFUSED WITH GEOGRAPHY
californiamarty ,   L.A. L.A.   (12.25.06)
Those who hate the Jews love to transfer the blame for all the ills of the world and their personal life onto the Jews. How many Jewish children died at the hands of suicide bombers and rockets launched by Arabs who call themselves Palestinians. The name of land of the birth of Jesus was not Palestine. Without a state there are no Palestinians.
33. If Jesus arrived today
Thomas Gordon ,   San Francisco, USA   (12.25.06)
...on the west bank, prosyletizing a new faith I doubt he would last 24 hours before the adherents of Islamic fundamentalism (ie. Hamas) would kill him.
34. #14 sorry, we dont have the same roots
Don ,   USA   (12.25.06)
unlike the Arabs who are dwelling in hate and misery the Jews don't blow up the kindergartens and schools.
35. Keep dreaming that Jesus was a Fatastani or Palestinian
Dutch ,   USA   (12.25.06)
Dreams are free of charge but please leave the Jews alone in peace.
36. #9 got it right !
(12.25.06)
Unfortunately you are 100% right
37. Whatever Jesus was......
Ram ,   London   (12.25.06)
here the Independent was NOT trying to investigate or declare his origin. The spin in the story serves to demonise the Jews and Isreal. They will re-write history to have us believe the Palestinians of today existed since then instead of a fabrication of Arafat as fresh as 1967, just to serve their purpose. Palestinian christians, the biggest victims of muslim Palestinians, do themselves a disservice giving their oppressors false legitimacy. Beware Cristian Palestinian #2! What you write out of ignorance gives credence to those intent on exterminating you along with the Jews!
38. John # 12
David ,   Jerusalem   (12.25.06)
hate to disappoint you, john, but at the time of Jesus's birth, Bethlehem was part of the Roman province of Judea. Yep, he was a Jew born in Judea. The province was renamed 'Palestina' by the Romans after the Bar-Kochba revolt in 135. That's the first time the name 'palestine' for the country is heard of. Jesus was a practicing Jew, born in Judea. He wouldn't even have had any idea what the word 'Palestine' meant.
39. poor mothers! praying for them!
Claire ,   California, USA   (12.25.06)
Those poor mothers! I'm praying for them but will more now than ever!
40. Study your history!
mary ,   usa   (12.25.06)
As a Catholic Christian, I find this article appalling. The territory now occupied by the Palestinians belonged to the Jewish people for thousands of years, so to say that Jesus was a "Palestinian" because today that area is occupied by Palestinians is misleading. Jesus, his Mother, his extended family, and his closest friends and earliest followers were all Jews. While Jews and Christians may disagree on exactly ho Jesus was/is, there's no disagreement on what he was...a devout, practicing Jew. Shame on the Independent for publishing such a misleading article!
41. To 26, wrong dude. The word Palestinian is very old
Observer   (12.25.06)
Reading some of the literature related to the religion of Islam, I notice that the established of the Dome of the Rock was called Raja' Ben Hayawah al-Kindi al-Filistini The word Filistini has been used during the Ummayid period. So What you are saying is wrong! al-Filistini means the Palestine since in Arabic Palestine is called Filistin just as Philistine is spelled. The word Filistin is probably older than the word Israel and was used to denote the Geographical area that constitutes most of the Mediterranean cost of the Holy Land... This has nothing to do with the Romans who came after 1000 year!
42. All, read this:
John ,   Jerusalem   (12.25.06)
Canaanites are considered to be among the first to live in cities in Palestine. [18][19]. Some of the Canaanites are believed to have migrated in the 3rd millenium BC from the inner Arabian Peninsula [2],Additionally, Israelites, Philistines, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, and other people have all settled in the region and some intermarried [20][21]. Some of their descendants converted to Christianity and later to Islam, and spoke different languages depending on the lingua franca of the time. For the most part, the Arabization of Palestine began in Umayyad times. Increasing conversions to Islam among the local population, together with the immigration of Arabs from Arabia and inland Syria, led to the replacement of Aramaic by Arabic as the area's dominant language. Among the cultural survivals from pre-Arab times are the significant Palestinian Christian community (and smaller Jewish and Samaritan ones) as well as Aramaic loanwords in the local dialect. A distinguishing characteristic of Palestinians is their dialect; unusually among Arabic speakers, speakers of rural Palestinian dialects pronounce the letter qaaf as k (Arabic kaaf). Palestinians, like most other Arabic speakers, thus combine pre-Arab and Arab ancestry; the precise mixture is a matter of debate, on which genetic evidence (see below) has begun to shed some light, apparently confirming Ibn Khaldun's widely accepted argument that most Arabic speakers descend mainly from acculturated non-Arabs. According to Sir James Frazer, the majority of Palestinian Arabs are descendants of the ancient Jebusites and Canaanites. In 1902, he wrote in his book The Golden Bough: "The Arabic-speaking peasants of Palestine are the progeny of the tribes which settled in the country before the Israelite invasion. They are still adhering to the land. They never left it and were never uprooted from it." [3] The genetic profile of the Palestinians which has been studied in [4] [22] supports Sir James Frazer claims: "Archaeologic and genetic data support that both Jews and Palestinians came from the ancient Canaanites, who extensively mixed with Egyptians, Mesopotamian and Anatolian peoples in ancient times."
43. anti-Israel
sam ,   USA   (12.25.06)
Lie again: "Israel must at least show the respect for other cultures it demands for itself. " here are hundreds of mask and Christian churches in Israel and no even one synagoge in Saudi Arabia. Or liar or not smart
44. #1, Why Checkpoints is ?, No attack on Israel
Les ,   Pensacola   (12.25.06)
Remove the checkpoints?? Remove the wall. Remove the Occupation. Let the Palestinians travel freely. Give them the water that is under their land, give them their land back. Stop destroying their homes, stop shelling their neighborhoods. This article attacks the illegal checkpoints, this is not an attack on Israel or Jews.
45. Mary will be declared German in a few years
Barry   (12.25.06)
46. Jesus Christ!!! If Jesus is Palis, they should be
john ,   nz   (12.25.06)
Christians and not Islam. UK papers, you mother of all concoctions.
47. #2 Why then was he the "king of the Jews?"
Steve   (12.25.06)
48. Ah yes, Arab lies and their appeasers are in season
David ,   Boston, USA   (12.25.06)
It doesnt surprise me because British messed up so much of the world and are still messing it up. Arabs are native to Arabia. Jews are native to Israel. Bethelehem is part of Israel. Jesus was a Jew living in Jewish land. Judea and Samaria are Jewish land. When Arabs and their appeasers stop making up history and start reading it there is hope for peace. WIth stories like this, the extremists have hope.
49. #41. ????????
Ram ,   London   (12.25.06)
It looks like you mis-understand both, #26 and the fact that the name "filstine" was labled on the Jews by the Romans BEFORE Islam existed.
50.  to 33. If Jesus arrived today in Israel
nobodysacred ,   canada   (12.25.06)
What would happened? Dare to respond? As to Muslim's reaction, Jesus will be welcome because he is considered as a Prophet as Mohamed and each time a Muslim say his name, he must add "Peace upon him. You want a proof?
51. the fact that some people also want to tie todays Israelis
funnyy   (12.25.06)
to the Israelites is also outrageous and funny. Today's Israelis come from evey place in the word, and surely many of them do not look like a typical middle eastern face! German Jews look Germans, English Jews look English, Indian Jews look Indian, African Jews look African, etc.......... Only Arab Jews look like typical middle easterns! It is indeed funny that many of the talk backs are trying to disconnect the Palestinians (muslims and christians) from their ancient roots, when they never left the middle east. And at the same time, try to connect any Jew in the world who has been absent for thousands of years to ancient Jews..!
52. to number 8, yes he was, and Moses was Egyptian!
Palestinian   (12.25.06)
53. before I post my talkback , tell me
(12.25.06)

55. Funny #51... you're very right..
Lynne   (12.26.06)
56. #52
(12.26.06)
Moses was a hebrew adopted by the royal Egyptian family. Next thing you know #52 will be saying ramses was a Muslim. If I adopt a black African does that make the African a white??? Plaestinian you should go pray to allah 100 times a day and ask why you were made such a moron.
57. If Jesus was a Palestinian then Pocohontus was A Virginian
zaq ,   ranaana   (12.26.06)
what utter rubbish...but hey lets work with it ok.... If Jesus was a Palestinian then Pocohontus was A Virginian
58. Jesus as Palestinian
Larry Saltzman ,   Petaluma   (12.26.06)
Since many Palestinians are descendents of the ancient Judeans of the province of Palestinia, this article is rather silly to be worried about whether Europeans are anti-Israel. Palestinians are not a bunch of Arabs who arrived in the 19th century as Zionist propagand would have us belive. Many of them have as legitimate a claim to Jesus as an ancestor as any European Jew could claim.
59. Jesus is a Jew??!! oh.. really?? so??
Lynne   (12.26.06)
to all those who are arguing that Jesus is NOT Palestinian 'cause he's a Jew.. 1- Jesus was sent with the message of Christianity.. He was born to be Christian in the first place.. anyway.. I don't believe that there is a difference between Christianity, Judaism and Islam since their message is one (montheism) and their God is one.. 2- many in here are using an ignorant argument implying that if Jesus was a Jew then he is not Palestinian.. because Jesus was there before Islam existed! like#s 26, 31 and 41... the name Filistine is labelled to those who have lived in the land of Palestine.. Jews then Christians and then Muslims.. most of you are mixing up between Palestine and Islam!!! and that's ignorant (no offense).. for most of you a Jew is an Israeli who had come from Europe, America, Africa.. etc.. but definitely a Palestinian is a Muslim and had always been a Muslim even before Islam!!! does that make sense?? Virgin Mary was a PALESTINIAN JEW .. this doesn't make her less Jewish!! and whoever thinks otherwise is a racist who is trying to categorise Jews according to ethnicity.. was Mary European or American??!!!
