3. Would you please listen?
MARK ,   CA, USA   (12.26.06)
Why is Olmert being so ignorant? what kind of signs does he want from Syria to show that they are interested in solving this long lasting conflict? How will you know if the Syrians are bluffing or not if you don't sit with them on the same table and try to listen to what they have to offer and promise? Stop listening to the biggest moran on earth "Bush" and give it a try.
4. Golan pre-sold & Livni on her way to Damascus
malcolm   (12.26.06)
This is going down like a clock. Now we're at the "committee" stage. Baidatz & his buddies in military intelligence seem to know exactly what's in the heart of schizophrenic Assad. Take note of when Traitor Olmert proclaimed "No Golan deals with Assad" in the past weeks. That of course meant "we pre-negotiated it away". Livni is chomping at the bit for another land giveaway experiment in the insane hopes she will get an international "KOL HAKAVOD!!!" and become TIME's "Woman of the Year". She can't wait to make her "historic" trip to Damascus. Meanwhile Tehran & Damascus are laughing their asses off as the West makes it's move following Jim Baker & Jimmy Carter's attempts to pressure Israel into "negotiations". But even luckier for them Olmert has already made up his mind to whittle away more land to the ayatollahs. Now he's setting up the public with recommendations from Tzipi & her committees.
5. There is free speech in Israel
Atilla Karagözoğlu ,   Istanbul   (12.26.06)
Foreign ministry official: Syria ready to negotiate ---------------- Mossad Chief Meir Dagan, who said last week that "There is no indication at the moment of actualization of Syrian positions or that the country is moving toward peace." ------------------- Olmert said recently during a joint press conference with his Norwegian counterpart Jens Stoltenberg in Jerusalem. "We want to achieve peace with every state, peace we want – but false pretenses we are not ready to accept," he said. ------------------ Defense Minister Amir Peretz said during Monday’s meeting that “there is no indication of a war with Syria in the summer, and all the remarks made on this issue are damaging.”
6. Defense Necessity of Golan Heights?
Neil ,   Tel Aviv   (12.26.06)
It seems to me that one of the things that the last "war" proved to us - in contrast to the situation in 1967 - is that with such long range missiles in the hands of a non-state terrorist entity, the Golan Heights no longer poses much of a threat if it were in the hands of a country wiling to sign a peace treaty with us. The only real cost would be the human cost of the displaced Golan residents - but that is a small price to pay for a good chance of making peace on a new front. We were willing to do it in Gaza for less of a chance of peace!

but why now? and at what cost to israel? you know that israelis can't trust the arabs. they have made so many promisses, told so many lies for their own interests. there must be a gesture on syria's part, whatever it is, to show us we can step forward. however, as long as tghey have a bloody hand in hizbullah, in terrorism, in arms shipments to terrorists and in lebanon and assasinations of those that do not support the"cause", no, we can't trust them. one cannot speak and do two different things. actions speak louder than words.
8. Syria
mordechai ,   jerusalem, israel   (12.26.06)
It is not unusual for different intelligence sources to come to diferent security assesments. Olmert is also correct in waiting to see some change in Syrian behavior before moving forward. Our major problem is that we are coming from a position of weakness, after losing a war in Lebanon.
9. to Number 6
Emilio ,   DC   (12.26.06)
Gaza is a sand box, you can not compare that to the magnificent golans, that nt only work as a defense and buffer zone, but also has lots of natural resources, and there is a real future of stablishing communities there. To be perfectly honest, I never cared much about Gaza, I have always been a pragmatic. I believe that we have to reach a peace agreement with the palestinians, and that involves, unfortunately, giving away some land in the west bank. But that is a price that i Woulb be willing to pay. Personally I would keep for us 5 or 6 big setttlements in the W.B. But, give me a break, The golans are really important for our survival, and if you, the politicians, the IDF, can not see that.....oh boy, I really fear about the survival of my country.
10. To #3: we have enough here in Israel
Z Lando ,   Tekoa Israel   (12.26.06)
Dear Mark - we have enough deluded people here in Israel that cannot see a liar if the guy were to tell him himself, without you telling us what to do. As for calling Bush "stupid" - what would you call that sex-addicted look alike to Alfred E Newman that you probably voted for twice, a genius? The world is at war - and just like before WWII there were so many voices like yours that said Hitler was just bluffing.... so please, if you cannot grow up, don't expect us to listen to your crying.
11. My country ?
David ,   Tel Aviv   (12.26.06)
Doesn't DC stand for District of Columbia?
12. To # 6
ALex ,   Rosh Haayin   (12.26.06)
I agree with what you're saying, but quit using "us this, we that" you're in DC, and thus you're not part of US. you're actually part of U.S.
13. The real reason...
GUY ,   USA   (12.26.06)
Syria has one very big interest in peace talks: getting back the Golan Heights. The reason they want this isn't because they just want land back or peace with Israel, its to better prepare them for a war. Before 1967, the Syrians controlled this elevated advantage over Israel and could freely shell villages and cities in northern Israel, and if Israel attacks, they can shoot at them from the top. So if Israel gives them back, they have no strategic deterrent in the north from Syria, as well as one they don't have from Hezbollah from the north. So giving the Golan Heights for peace is totally fake, because it'll make Israel more vulnerable in war. That's why Israel won't give it up.....
14. Dear Alex....

I will not be here forever, I have Jewish Blood and for me , that is all that matters. Hopefully I will be in Haifa (my city) when I finish the things I have to do here. Best regards!

You remind me of the Israeli who moved to the US. He told everyone that he was moving back to Israel just as soon as his kids finished college. He has a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old.
