1. 'served'
Daniel van Dalen ,   Jerusalem   (12.28.06)
Obviously he 'served' as public relations advisor for the above-mentioned. Past tense, because they fired him when he lost his mind. I don't know what to reply to such an idiot. Except to conclude that that is exactly what he is: an idiot. Also a heretic.
2. Source of the Law!
Stan ,   USA   (12.28.06)
"As we may recall, laws were drafted by people, just like Jewish law was written by human beings." If you believe that nonsense, you don't believe in Judaism, you believe in Academia. Judaism is about following the laws it believes G-d gave to it. Without that, it has nothing other than it's own culture, just like every other civilization.
3. Rabbis are truly unworthy
Eli ,   Israel   (12.28.06)
Mr Moni Mordechai has stated it perfectly.
4. You're right, Moni
Suzie ,   Los Angeles, USA   (12.28.06)
One of the reasons for the pervasive anti-semitism around the world is the failure of our religious estalishment to exercise Jewish law. Instead, they use their religious mentle to enrich themselves, and suppress any sign of spiritual freedom. I truly can't say I have ever met a rabbi who wasn't a criminal, an idiot, or woefully lacking in responsibility. I was born to an orthodox family, but as I grew up I began to rebel against the stupid, and sometimes cruel rules which were enforced on me. I can tell you stories all day long....
5. I feel bad for this guy...what ignorance...END
(12.28.06)
6. At long last
Peter ,   Raanana   (12.28.06)
This is exactly what the majority of the Jews in Israel feel. The religious community have long lost their way. As an ex-orthodox Jew, I agree with the sentiments of this article
7. MAKE UP YOUR OWN RELIGION
bill handel ,   brooklyn, usa   (12.28.06)
..Judaism is not social Gospel.
8. Suzie: YOU'RE AN IDIOT!
(12.28.06)
9. #1 - Nice response: name calling....the article...
andy ,   ramat hasharon   (12.28.06)
is insightful and true. Alot of individuals in the religious establishment are morally bankrupt. Its obvious. This article describes how I and many other people in this country feel.
10. mordechai..you looked for the bad...YOU WILL FIND IT

BUT TO OTHERS IT IS *their gospel #8 SUZIE IS AN IDIOT mordechai....mordechai ...mordechai thick stubborn brain what can i tell you..nothing you know it all wonder what you wouldve told MOSES if you ever met him
11. it's funny how seemingly all of those who agree with Moti...
(12.28.06)
are self-proclaimed 'ex-Orthodox', basically people who don't want G-d in their lives, don't want to have to answer to anyone - don't want to be held accountable for their own actions, etc. but are so quick to condemn the religious for that, when the religious are the only ones who are actually checking themselves! who is your moral authority? ehud olmert? tommy lapid? you guys are a joke. the only thing that would save you at this point is a return to religion. i am not saying this as a religious person, as i am still trying to find my way - and refuse to label myself - but i can tell you that you definitely need some direction, because you are CONFUSED.
12. Mr. Mordechai asks some good questions, but.....
Steve ,   USA   (12.28.06)
Modechai writes: "Have the rabbis attempted to resolve some kind of important social issue that the country is coping with? Foreign workers? Constitution? The Muslim world? Minimum wage? Unemployment? Ethnic rifts? Environmental issues? Purity of arms?" These are good questions, especially purity of arms is relevant today, but what are "universal moral values?" Are these as important to Jews as say, "international law" that universally finds Israel guilty of "illegal occupation" of Palestinian land? I'm not an overly religious Jew. Still I believe the Orthodox should rule on life cycle matters like marriage, divorce, conversion, etc. Even ordination and Sabbath. Sure the rabbis make mistakes and many times I do not agree with our rabbis but traditional (Orthodox) Judaism has held the Jews together over the many centuries. Are secular, liberal Jews going to keep the Jews from assimilation and intermarriage? It does not look promising. Look at the U.S. and liberal Judaism. It's not working. I was profoundly disappointed however in the silence of our rabbis over "disengagement" from Gaza and northern Samaria which I thought immoral. Where were our Orthodox rabbis?
13. STOP CAUSELESS HATRED
CJ ,   chicago USA   (12.28.06)
Sterotyping Orthodox Jews and Rabbis is counterproduct and creates causeless hatred. Second, the current leaders of Israel are left wing secular and cultural Jews. Perhaps you erred in entrusting Olmert, Livni and Peretz with leadership positions. It is clear you do not believe that G-d exists, the Torah is relevant, or in the value of prayer. Our enemies are praying 5 times a day. I live in the USA and have seen the future of cultural Judaism, which is assimilation and loss of Jewish identity.
14. Judaism in Israel
Israeli ex-American ,   Haifa Israel   (12.28.06)
As a committed Jew who made aliyah 25 yrs ago I can tell you that my biggest disappointment is with the religious establishment. The haredi community and religious establishment is filled with parasites who view their less observant co-religionists with contempt. Instead of protecting foreign workers as they are commanded to by our torah they are busy blocking building projects because they may be digging up 2oo yr old graves of people who may have been Jewish.
15. Torah given to all Jews
Dovid N. ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.28.06)
Moni saids" The Torah was given to the people of Israel and not to the religious only" If Moni knows that hashem Gave Bnei Israel The Torah then why doesn't he follow it?
16. Blah blah blah ha ha ha ha ha ha, whatever
BUSH ,   USA   (12.28.06)
My 2 year old knows more than him. I love how only the secular Jews blame anti semitism in the world today because of the religious while the anti semites themselves blame it on the secular type jews It's not only the holocaust that one should remember but as well that it started in secular germany and not religious Poland. Mordy sounds jealous that the orthodox are ahead of the secular with family values, educationand 99% crime free, drug free etc. They say if you can't beat 'em join 'em. Keep fighting but we lasted 3000 years with people much worst than you, you are just a feather in our way.
17. Unworthy Rabbis
Y Kahn ,   Har Nof , Yerushlem   (12.28.06)
Moni M. says "We erred when we abandoned our Judaism in the hands of the religious establishment. Our leaders erred when they abandoned the Torah and allowed one branch to dictate our way of life based on a conservative.." You, MM, know nothing of history- There were no other takers besides the Ortho's - all other brands of Rabiners had removed any mention of Zion from their sidurim. And where were all the secular humanists in 48? I'll tel u where-agitating against a Jewish State. Now that they see that Israel is a viable business they jump on the bandwagon. You can keep em.
18. Teshuva
Luis Roizman ,   São Paulo - Brazil   (12.28.06)
Israel, the Jewish State? Begin a Teshuva, now, Mordechai.
19. Unworthy writers
Alex ,   Toronto   (12.28.06)
B''H How very progressive and liberal of you, Mr. Sh-moni, to brand an entire group of your fellow Jews without exception as "unworthy" - and the very liberal coffee-sippin' ynet (y-not?) readership enthusiastically agrees. How nice... - will y'al be purchasing large quantities of brown shirts then? Now, who's “unworthy”, dear Shli-moni? Or should we rather say - "worthless"? Let's see: "The Torah was given to the people of Israel and not to the religious only": Whoa?! Can anyone imagine a slogan more idiotic than this? Is our liberal author on crack or some other substance? Oh wait! Of course, this one is even better, (drum roll, please): the "secular rabbi" mischigas... Yidden, please tell me: Is this some kinda comedy or has all of the Herzl's Paradise gone completely nuts? Riboino Shel Oilom - You see how Your children are confused, groping in darkness. Send us moshiach already - if You delay any more, ch''v, who knows? we may as well come up with "Yoshke-Worshiping-Witnesses-of-the-13th-day-KKK-Member Rabbis" demanding recognition and full representation on Beis Din - Rachmono Litzlan.... Yidden - please wake up. Your country is being overrun by ego-maniacal idiots with tiny brains and gigantic kibbutznik-bred self-esteems. And these very idiots are deciding *your* fate and playing with *your* lives and polluting your and your children's minds and souls…All of Israel is Shderot now, y'know. Look where it is all going… Hashem Yishmor.
20. What's happening to the OPINION column ?
gabriela ben ari   (12.28.06)
It's getting trashier by the minute. A kid in grade 8 couldn't write something so childish, so lacking perspective. Who cares what this Moni thinks !
21. suzie don't you cry
banjo on my knee ,   Alabama   (12.28.06)
could it be you became a rebel because you yourself was brought up in a family lacking in responsibility, criminals and idiots. Last I checked more seculars become religious than religious rebelling. There are many many religious families who are honest and responsible raising their children with values something you probably lacked in childhood.
22. #14 Re: parasites
Steve   (12.28.06)
We have good and bad in all Jewish communities. You may know, before the Holocaust, Ze'ev Jabotinsky warned that the ghettos of Europe needed to be evacuated because he could see what was coming. Most rabbis throughout Europe repudiated these wanings and told their flocks to stay put. Some feared the loss of power were they to immigrate to the Holy Land. The rest is history. Like I said, rabbis make mistakes and they can be very costly but overall observant Jews are a critical component of our people even Haredi Jews. I probably find myself leaning more toward the religious-Zionist camp, many of whom live in the territories. You don't think these are Jewish parasites do you? Religious Zionists?
23. Funny some Talkbackers think their LESS morally bankrupt
Darren ,   Tampa, FL USA   (12.28.06)
than the Rabbis they "trash". Hey like one talkbacker said: "Make up your own religion". Many of you are "Jews" by genetics only, i.e. descendants of Jacob (Israel) with NOTHING to do with the Torah (Old Testament) and/or the Law of Moses given to man by God for many of you don't follow it or believe it. Although PRO-Israeli, I am beginning to think that much of Israel is morally bankrupt from its leadership on down.
24. Rabbis
Helen ,   Maalot, Israel   (12.28.06)
I am sorry that Moni Mordechai has not had the opportunity to meet Reform and Conservative rabbis, many of whom I admire greatly. It's time for Israel to recognize all streams.
25. bush
charles ,   petach tikva   (12.28.06)
Orthodox ahead of secular ? 1] family values : the religious orthodox woman do not dare to protest against their husbands 2] Crimes : look here in Israel : even a baby was assassinated by his ultra orthodox father 3] Drugs : a center for charidi addicts is established in Bne berak . Moral values : seculars do'nt need tora for not stealing , murders and so on . It's not religion that has united the Jewish people , it's mostly antisemitism . Antisemites were much more virulent in Poland than in Germany , even if the Shoa has begun , and was in great part executed by german nazis . Even after the war there were Jews who were assassinated in poland . And Auschwitz is situated in poland , other extermination sites also .
26. Y kahn
charles ,   petach tikva   (12.28.06)
The secular , humanist , anti religious Jews , were those mostly involved in the creation of the state How many of the 6000 who died in the Independance war were religious ? There were of course GOOD religious Jews who fought and fell , but a majority was secular .
27. Ignorance masked as erudite opinion
Meir Moses   (12.28.06)
28. I'll take an apikoris over an am haaretz any day
David ,   Israel   (12.28.06)
There was a time when even the least among us understood that the greatest insult in the Jewish world was to be an am haaretz. Hence the countless jokes about goyim who went in search of apikorsim and found bearded men with kipot sitting in the synogogue pouring over the Talmud, and in shock said: "I thought you were the apikoris of (insert shtetle name)!" And, always, the apikoris would respond with the punchline, offended: "I'm an apikoris, not an am haaretz!" Now the am haaretzim want to claim the apikorsim are doing wrong? Please. Give me a break. You have to know something before you can raise the hue and cry in the Jewish world. The problem today is that the ignoramouses think they know something. Sit down and master the tradition yourself before you open your mouth. Then, and only then, can you put yourself forward as its rightful defender. What's more, the men you attack aren't the sole members of the religious establishment. Many, many good, righteous, informed people are religious. Every single one of them is more qualified to bear the standard than you. Heck, I'd take an informed apikoris first.
29. the inmates are running the asylum
American Israeli ,   USA/Israel   (12.29.06)
the sad fact of the matter is that the inmates are running the asylum. from the top down they rule, leaving in their wake those who don't consult a rabbi for their every waking decision (ie, the majority). look at the recent attempt to at last resolve the issue of women who are lost/stuck because their worthless ex-husband won't give them a get (for spite, usually). who do the rabbinate think they are? and please tell me where in torah it says they should wear elaborate, ornate headress and fancy dark glasses in doors. nothing says humility and piety like a fashion statement. seriously, who do these people think they are, and they want to make decisions for me? these are the people who want to say ger tzedek cannot make aliyah? what, not jewish enough? oi gevalt...case in point why i quit their little club. i fear G-d, not the rabbinate.
30. Charles
BUSH ,   USA   (12.29.06)
that is why I said 99% because in every group there is a bad apple. Do not deny that orthodox do not have respect for their teachers and parents or older siblings something very lacking by non orthodox. Look at the schools for yourself then decide. Why would any woman even in the secular world want to protest against their husbands. Are you hinting to me something I don't know about the secular wives and husbands. In the Torah Jewish world a man must give a lot of honor to his wife and a wife to a husband. Husbands constantly give their wives flowers and jewelry for Shabbat and Yom Tov to show appreciation of all the cooking and cleaning they do at those times. Then comes Shabbat with kids standing on line waiting to get a blessing from their father and mother. Mommy the food tastes so yummy. Thank you. Singing songs, asking questions, offering prizes and candy. Father cuts a small piece of bread for himself and gives a larger piece to his wife to honor her. Sorry you lacked this goodness but do not drag us on to the same boat that you are drowning in.
