1. Jews and Muslims are not races
Antonio ,   Haifa   (01.03.07)
Jews are an ethnicity and Muslims are a religion. And Jews don't go out for handouts to these soup kitchens. So annoying when these dimwits try to tie Jews into Muslim issues.
2. To Antonio - How do you know?
Nora ,   Israel   (01.03.07)
How do you know that no Jews need the services of a soup kitchen? There are too many Jews here in Israel who do make use of such services, so why not in Paris also?
3. #1 and #2
Ariel ,   Canberra, Australia   (01.03.07)
#1 - What is the difference between an ethnicity and a race? I am confused. Jews are decendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; Sarah, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel. #2 - Why would Jews in Paris go to a fascist soup kitchen which is obviously serving pig to keep them away? I am sure there are soup kitchens (or other services) run by the French Jewish Community so that poor Jews don't need to rely on these other people.
4. To number one, Jews are not only an ethnicity
Palestinian   (01.03.07)
One may be Jewish simply because his religion is Jewish, although conversion is hard. If Jews are by ethnicity, then according to this definition, many of the native Palestinians are Jews!! I personally know many Muslim Palestinian families in Hebron and Nablus who will tell you we have been Jews few hundred years back and they converted to Islam... According to your definitions, they are both Jews and Muslims!
5. jews are an ethnicity???
vicken ,   montreal, canada   (01.03.07)
Both Jews and Muslims dont eat pork u fool, and thats the main point of tha article. So stop trying in every way to convince urself and the world that that Jews are an ethnicity (which they sure as hell arent).
6. How come Jews and Muslims don't eat pork?
(01.03.07)
7. I thought the article was about a French soup kitchen
(01.03.07)
cut off petty arguments on non related topics!
8. # 3 -
tma   (01.03.07)
You forgot to mention Jacob's two concubines, and who knows from where THEY originated? How do we know they were even Hebrews, like the four mothers? This would mean that the descendants of some of the twelve tribes may not be even Jewish.
9. Why haven't the islamics killed these "infidels?"
Bunnie Meyer ,   Santa Monica,CA USA   (01.03.07)
10. This is really stupid.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (01.03.07)
Who cares if some charity serves pig soup? Most people in the world eat pork. Personally, it sounds disgusting but I'm sure a lot of people like it. But why make an issue of it? There is just too much political correctness flying around & most of it is nonsense. I grew up in a non-Jewish envirnment - if I couldn't eat the food somewhere, tough, I waited til I could could find something I could eat. I didn't expect the world to change because of my diet. It's the same with vegetarians. This political correctness is making the world crazy.
11. #10 - I don't dig French Facists
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.03.07)
but this is a private soup kitchen, they can serve what they want. Now, if they actually turned anyone away, there might be a case here.
12. To #10
Sebastien ,   Tel Aviv   (01.03.07)
The problem is not to serve pork or not. The problem is that by serving pork, they want to keep away Jews and Muslims or to make them eat pork because they are hungry, which is a form of humiliation. By the way, when I first read this news one year ago, those French facists said that the soup was for the "real" French. This is the problem.
13. #12
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.03.07)
Now, that kind of talk ("real French") could put them, pardon the pun, in the soup! But again, they are operating privately without government funding , and as long as they don't turn anyone away, they can't be accused of discrimination. There are probably soup kitchens in Israel operating without a Kashrut certificate, or with the "wrong" Kashrut certificate, and no one has fussed about them yet, they just went on to the next place, which met their needs.
14. Jews aen't an ethnicity..
Abdullah ,   Morroco   (01.03.07)
Jews are multi-ethnic and apparently always have been, if you believe the torah's accounts. Morrocan Jews have a very different "ethnicity" from russian jews, and in some cases even from each other. It seems to me that It is really hard to "define a Jew", especially given the fact that traditional halacha has been undermined somewhat in the current era. But I guess you can say that Jews are mostly part of race of people descended descended from avraham, yizhak and ya'akov, who still remeber their ancestory and who for the most part identify with the traditional jewish religion in varying extents. Howver, there are gray areas: 1) Not everyone who is a jew is of this "patriarchal race" or heritage. 2) And not everyone who shares the same "race" of the jewish people (same patriarchal heritage) is a "legally" jew even if they still remeber this latent heritage or ven parctice the jewish religion according to halacha.e.g the bnei menashe before their conversion or even some palistinian arabs and "samaritans". 3) And not everyone who practices the jewish religion according to halacha is "legally" a jew, even though the religion does connect them to the patriarchal heritage and the jewish people past and present.e.g. various indian and african groups that are turning to traditional judaism. In short, it is hard to define a jew. But the traditional jewish religion does provide a guaranteed means to connect every jew and descendant of the patriarchs past, present and future. It is the only common denominator, it seems to me.
15. I guess their kitchen isn't kosher
Abdullah ,   Morroco   (01.03.07)
16. Pork is unclean food
Brod ,   USA   (01.03.07)
GOD declares pork as Unclean and should NOT be eaten. It is full of trichina that causes trichinosis. Read Leviticus.
17. #16
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.03.07)
I don't think Leviticus mentions trichina, and nowadays people know how to raise and cook pork safely.
18. # 16
Renee, NYC   (01.03.07)
The fear of trichinosis is no longer relevant because it can be eliminated with proper cooking. Not only that, but eating even kosher meat when it's not properly cooked is just as dangerous. So, if you want to rationalize not eating pork on religious grounds, that's fine. However, I'd suggest leaving the health issues to those whose job it is to deal with such things.
19. racism101 #1
dana ,   ny   (01.03.07)
The left uses the term racism for their opponents no matter the facts. The french the arabs and the Jews are all the same race, but by calling everything racist they think they can intimidate their opponents. By the way even if they remove the pork it would still be treife.
20. The French Finally Show Some Backbone!
David ,   Marietta USA   (01.03.07)
21. Too bad Jews and Muslims can get along everywhere but Israel
Mohammad   (01.03.07)
22. Officialy,Jews+Muslims dont eat Pork,but a lot of unofficial
eating is done ,   Alan-SA   (01.03.07)
23. Oh yes, Jews are an ethnicity
Jake   (01.04.07)
Ethnicity does not pertain to race or color. It pertains to nationhood and peoplehood, WHICH JEWS ARE WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. That definition goes way back to the Bible. That being the case, it is expected that in all Arab countries, including Palestinians, there is the full spectrum of colors, from pitch black with negroid features to blond hair, green eyes, etc.
24. Mohammad, especially in Saudi Arabia!
Jake   (01.04.07)
25. Arabs are the sons of Adnan and Qahtan, not Abraham
Jake   (01.04.07)
The earliest patriarchs of the Arabians are called Adnan, the father of the northern Arabians, and Qaytan, the father of the southern Arabians. The claim of descent from Abraham does not exist prior to Islam. Abraham and the Hebrews, according to the Bible, came from an area of Aram Naharayim which today corresponds to modern Kurdistan Turkey on the border with Syria - not, in fact, Iraq or Arabia or any Arabian location. The Hebrews adopted the language we now call Hebrew on their arrival in Canaan.
26. You are allowed to eat pork if you're dying of hunger
Jake   (01.04.07)
And what other reason would you need to go to a soup kitchen? Think about it.
27. #21 - they do get along here when:
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.04.07)
1) It comes to hating gays 2) it's to prevent women from having control of their own bodies 3) they need the public to feed children they brought into the world knowing they can't provide for their needs.
28. Non kosher
charles ,   petach tikva   (01.04.07)
Pork or not pork , this kitchen is NOT kosher . They also not use kosher meat , mix meat and dairy , and so on . An observant Jew shall not go to eat there . Muslims is not our problem , it's theirs So why have Jews to have a problem with this kitchen .
29. To # 26
charles ,   petach tikva   (01.04.07)
Yes you are right , if you are dying from hunger and for other reasons , you may , and even have to , eat not kosher food , even pork . But in France there are also Jewish organisations who help needy Jews , so they have not to go there and eat pork .
30. #28
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.05.07)
Not every Jew keeps kosher. I have a French (Jewish) friend who after decades still raves about her mom's rabbit stew.
