1. Hummus not Israeli!!
C'est Moi ,   Canada   (01.04.07)
Last time I checked people in the middle east were eating hummus long before '48!!! Most israelis were in Russia, Poland, etc. and not there. There is no Israeli culture full stop. Sorry if this is offensive but its the truth.
2. this is funny
Jamal Aboud   (01.04.07)
To our beloved Jewish people: you even want to steal our food. The chosen people should make choices, too. This is an Arabic food. Period. "though you shall not steal."
3. Hug a tree and get a Big Mac you need it bad!!

5. #1 is accurate
Paul ,   Austin, USA   (01.04.07)
To say or even imply that hummus is a food founded in Israel is grossly inaccurate, but it's Israeli by virtue of being there and loved so long. It's the same w/pizza or hamburgers being "american" foods, or pommes frites being a "Belgian" food (potatoes are from the Americas.).
6. 1&2, plenty of Israelis are Mizrachi, or from the mid-East.
Sam ,   Virginia, USA   (01.04.07)

No Israeli culture? Have you ever been here? If you had you would know better than to make such a stupid statement. And by the way what exactly is Canadian culture? Watered down Americanism?

That's why most of them have no brains;-)Long time ago someone(in Israel) told me that falafel is a best food on Earth.Someone ,who drives old Fiat can't imagine how it feels driving Rolls-Royce.

Israeli culture is a mixture of Ashkenazi and Sefardic origins.Show me one example of pure Israeli culture.Regarding Canada it is part British and part French culture.Same is for US.

enzo ,   london,uk   (01.04.07)
Because of you two, I have read this interesting article TWICE!!! And nowhere in the article I found that "Hummus is Israeli"!!! And nowhere I found that Jamal's beloved Jewish people want to steal "your" food!!! You're sooo prejudiced!!! The chickpea was used as food by our hunter-gatherer ancestors tens of thousands of years ago and was cultivated around 7,000 years ago in the Middle East. Thank you, Tali and Uri for the appetising recipe! Bon appetit.

It says Hummus is the "ultimate Israeli Food" in the title. It's a matter of syntax. No, it isn't saying that Hummus is an Israeli invention, but it's easy to misinterpret that header.. especially if one is inclined to that to begin with like #1.
12. Israel has been around alot longer than '48...
Truth strikes again   (01.05.07)
...and Jews have been in Israel located in the middle east much longer than the Arabs. Just ask the Pharell or the ancient Romans!
13. Israeli Food hmmm... but there is no Israeli people
Israeli ???   (01.05.07)
Funny how there is an israeli culture or food, but no Israeli people. If you don't believe me check inthe interior ministry, or the high court decision from 2002 which states there is no place for the term "Israeli" in any official reference ! (such as the ID card)
14. The Food that Jamal Stole
Serge ,   Montreal, Canada   (01.05.07)
I am in awe at the stupendous stupidity I read here! Tell me, will the Arabs now apply their own idiocy to themselves, and give back all of the delicious foods that they "stole" from the Ottomans, that is, the Turks? It is simply astonishing. Apparently we Jews do not have the right to cook the foods we did for hundreds or thousands of years, because it will interrupt the fantasy of the Arabs who wish to suggest that we Jews have no history or do not exist. But it is funny, they want it both ways. First they say that the Jews were never an ethnic minority in Arab lands, only an "Arab" religious group. Then they say that, darn it, Jews have no right to cook the "Arab" foods as they were never "Arab" after all. For God's sake, these Arabs can be racist all they want. But why can they not at least be consistent?

NYC Girl   (01.05.07)
It's amazing how even an article on so benign a subject as food can bring out all the knuckle-draggers. Those of you Arabs, Canadians, and even Texans who believe there's no Israeli culture, that Israelis stole Arab foods...or whatever the hell other racist bull you believe, are beginning to sound utterly tedious and predictable.
16. #7 - Mike from rishon
tma   (01.05.07)
You're not from North America, are you? Canada's been around longer than the U.S.A. Check your history books. Canada is not related at all to the U.S., only a neighboring country. They share some history such as the French and British both wanting to own North America and warring over this. However, in those days Canada and the U.S were named "upper Canada" and "lower Canada". CHeck your facts before making ridiculous comments, eh!
17. The ultimate food for Israeli's
Spinner ,   World   (01.05.07)
This is what the headline should read. So what if the Jews make and enjoy an Arab dish...imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As for those of you who are being racist over food...shut up!!! Eat your hate with a side of shame and wash it down with a glass of guilt!!
18. World Spinner
Made N. ,   Israel   (01.05.07)
Put youself right first, and only then see to the rest of the world, i.e. learn punctuation... ISRAELIS not..Israeli's. It put me off reading the rest. Sorry, Spinner.
19. #1, #2 Guess where local Arabs ate during Eid Ul Adha?
Logic ,   Israel   (01.05.07)
I saw hundreds lining up at the neighborhood McDONALDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Couldn't even get in the door if I wanted to.

What is weight of one package of hummus (beans)?
21. The politics of hummus
Avital ,   Haifa   (01.05.07)
How very perverse that even an article about food can be turned into a political "food fight." How juvenile!
22. To Tali & Uri - a small suggestion
Avital ,   Haifa   (01.05.07)
Thank you for your lovely article and the delicious recipe. I would only make the suggestion that in future you include nutritional/caloric information, which could be of benefit to your readers.

TMA, I suggest you read your history books. What today is the U.S. was never called "lower Canada." Lower Canada consisted of parts of Quebec, Newfoundland, and Labrador. Excluding the Native Americans, which both countries are more than capable of doing, the first permanent European settlement in Canada was in 1605 (Port Royal), and the first permanent settlement in the U.S. was in 1559 (Pensacola Florida). As for the Independence of each nation, the U.S. became an independent nation in 1776, and Canada gained its independence starting in 1867. Of course some would argue, me not being one of them, that Canada still does not have "full" independence considering your Head of State sits in London, England.
24. regardless of ethnic origins, hummus is GOOD!
Cameron ,   USA   (01.05.07)
Discovering hummus while living in Chicago was definitely a culinary highpoint. Sitting down to a plate of hummus, pita and olives is always high on the list of good things to run into. The ME may be 'mad as a Hatter,' but the good food from there makes it easier to put up with.
25. For #12
Paul ,   Austin USA   (01.05.07)
Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael are 2 different things. Cite all the metaphysical and outdated sources you wish, but Eretz Yisrael was technically born in '48. "Israeli" pertains to Eretz Yisrael; whereas "Jewish" pertains to Am Yisrael. In any case, hummus is not an Israeli creation, just as pasta is not an Italian creation.

Emily ,   Calif.   (01.06.07)
You are absolutely right. It's just an article about food, giving a recipe, but it has turned into a big political discussion. I've noticed the same thing with Ynet's travel articles and how a nice, inocuous travel article will generate some of the most politically charged comments. Oh well, at least people have opinions. Better than being a non-thinking blob.

truth strikes again   (01.06.07)
You could not be more wrong. Eretz Israel means The Land = The special Land of Israel which belongs to the Jews. It was Eretz Israel prior to the Roman's conquering it and it is Eretz Israel today...just a smaller Eretz Israel.

29. Humus
Hilda ,   USA   (01.06.07)
Since I am an Ameircan Ashkenazi I was introduced to Humus when I lived in Israel in the middle 1950's. I brought humus and felafel to the US with me on my return home and was the first to make my own felafel from scratch. In fact I made it for my Hadassah group. to celebrate Yom Haatzmaut. . It has become a regular part of our diet and in fact we had it for dinner last night. I do not make felafel any longer because it is too much fuss and I have not found anyone who can make it taste as delicious as it did in those old days. Perhaps it was because there wasn;t much else to eat back then. that I remember it so fondly, I never felt the same about Gefilte fish.
30. To # 5
Belgian ,   Belgium   (01.06.07)
You can eat your American potatoes as they are , raw . And then True Belgian Frites , not USA made , but in Belgium . Then you will know what frites means . In the mean time eat your burgers or other fast food , this is not a culinary art . Its chemistry .
