1. Superb journalistic work
Frank Smadja ,   Israel   (01.07.07)
Itai, I read your article and saw the footage on TV a few days ago. This is truly astounding and very sad. It is indeed out of proporton. I command you for tackling difficult subjects, this is the work of a true journalist. My hope is that with the information will come the knowledge and maybe this situation will improve. What is the root of the conflict there?
2. Screw Congo
Tired Jew ,   Israel   (01.07.07)
We Jews have enough problems right here in Israel, let's solve our own problems first before even thinking of the rest of the world. Jews for Jews first!
3. Where is the UN and the EU?
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (01.07.07)
Oh, I forgot: They're a busy hashing out one stupid resolution after the other condemning Israel for defending itself now and then and for building walls, not to mention jumping up and down over the horrible treatment of terrorists at Gitmo. As soon as they get through with that which, if the various and assorted asshats have anything to say, is never, they will get down to some pesky business like indiscriminate mass slaughter in Darfur, the Congo, etc. All those dead, starving and mutilated black people, especially children, just don't make for sexy headlines. Besides, why go to some mosquito-infested, god-forsaken, hot as hell place in the middle of nowhere, when you can pontificate in that nice, air-conditioned place in New York City?
4. why print this
zlk ,   tel aviv   (01.07.07)
if you do not follow through with some sort of contact. we can read it and mourn this tragedy, but it means nothing if we are unable to ACT. provide some sort of outreach.
5. I saw this "katava" on "ouvda"
tma   (01.07.07)
And it's terrible what's going on there. #2, that was an insensitive comment. WHy are you so insensitive, is it because the victims in Congo are women that you couldn't care less what happens there? This is a humanistic issue and the whole world shoud learn of it and act upon it to put an end to the suffering of these poor women.
6. Itai Engel's way to relate this story is so strong...
stephane ,   france   (01.07.07)
i don't understand each word in english, but itai engel explane so clearly what is happening there, that, for 5 minutes,i forgot that i was in paris,he "transported" me to congo to see the horror happening there...thousands of civilians are murdered, thousands of women are raped, and the world doesn't give a shit! the world prefer crying when israel eliminate 1 or 2 terrorists, but don't move for millions of innocents...it's good that we have reporters like itai to tell us what is happening over there.
7. To D Tutu:: Please look at the facts of your own backyard...
KMR ,   Middle East   (01.07.07)
Your eagerness to head a fact finding mission to satisfy your OIC friends by ignoring the sufferings of millions of your own people (in Zimbabwe, Congo, Darfur...or....u name it...) is itself a sin. First, give a life to these forgotten souls before embark on politically charged high profile ‘UN rights council’ missions. U are a Hypocrite looking for cheap publicity. Your slogan "God is not a Christian" will not take u anywhere except to Aljazeera (or BBC) TV talk shows.
8. To #6, Stephane
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (01.07.07)
Your English is just fine. You understood the gist of the article. Just remember: Two of the most important words in American English are, "oh, shit." It's our primary commentary on just about everything. It's similar to "sacre bleu" or as Americans would read it, " scare blue."
9. #8 thank you for the lesson :-)
stephane ,   france   (01.07.07)
10. Excuse ME, BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR PROBLEMS FIRST?!?
(01.07.07)
Jews for some reason latch onto every single problem in the world except for ours, we have a huge problem in regards to how our enemies keep launching rockets at Sderot, ARE YOU THERE? We have problems with Iran how she keeps taunting and stating that they will use nukes against us, ARE YOU THERE? Or are you Jews just ready to light another candle at the beginning of the Holocaust 2 service?!?!? OUR PROBLEMS FIRST MUST BE FIXED THEN WE CAN CONCERN OURSELVES WITH THE GOYIM

tma   (01.07.07)
Writing and reading articles concerning problems in other parts of the world do not diminish people's interest in our own problems. We are all too aware of the problems in Israel, including the poor people living under fire in Sderot. That does not mean we have no interest in what happens in other parts of the world. Other peoples suffer too. You're right, however, there should be more thought-provoking articles on the problems we have in Israel: Sderot, the north, the unemployment, women being treated as second-class citizens, the Ethiopians murdering their wives, the division between various sectors of Israelis. Living in Israel isn't easy.
12. Reduced to tears
Li ,   Eilat, Israel   (01.07.07)
I am sitting here sobbing after reading this article.....thank you for highlighting this subject which I had not even heard of. Now PLEASE can someone let me know what I can do to help stop this & how to help these poor people! We can all sit on our backsides & say that we have enough problems of our own but if this article does not make you want to DO something then you have lost some of your humanity. Please let us know what is needed & thank you for writing this article with such sensitivity.
13. to # 2, your comment is disgusting
female ,   Tel Aviv   (01.07.07)
Where is your compassion? Jews like you the outside world hate, I would say with "tzedek"...
14. To #10
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (01.07.07)
Do you have any idea how much $ is given to Jewish causes by private goyim; no questions asked, nothing expected in return? We can't inject ourselves into the internal affairs of Israel, and we can neither stop nor respond to those qassams. So, we do the best we know how: We pray, cheer you on, pull out our hair over things we don't understand about your politics, raise hell with our government, when we think they're screwing up and donate money. Charity, as they say, may start at home, but isn't it true, too, that you're always supposed to extend a helping hand to those who have less than you do? If nothing else, one can, at least, acknowledge the plight of people, who are much, much worse off. It could just be that, when all is said and done and we have only to face ourselves, we'll not judge ourselves on how "good" we were in our own little spaces, but on how we behaved towards our fellow men.

jerome ,   basalt, co   (01.07.07)
Jews, Israelis and anyone else should be concerned and have compassion with other people no matter the color, religion, or region. That's what makes the Jewish religion different and special. I'm not a religious person but know enough to see this. All people are from the same blood and guts. The world is a hard place with all the hate and ego-maniacs with guns, igronrance and power. It's even good to be inform about what goes on in the Congo to figure out if there is anyway to help, no matter if someone is as you say a goy or not. We are all cousins.
16. Your writing made me listen..
terry ,   california, us   (01.07.07)
you are right- it is so hard to hear but you made your readers listen by telling the story slowly. Rape takes war to the most personal level. Why is there no world response?
17. #2, 7 & 10 - what it means to care...
Kate ,   Jerusalem   (01.07.07)
This is one of the best articles I've read on the horror of Eastern Congo. Your talkbacks are the worst. Yes, we have problems - but should this ever stop us, as humans, from caring - then we should give up the right to be "G-d's People".
18. This article should be directed to...
Lucia ,   USA   (01.07.07)
The people who have the most $$ and influence, are the most travelled and have the most amount of sympathy for the underpriveleged - HOLLYWOOD! Not Ynet readers.
19. Nobody cared about Jews during World War II
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (01.07.07)
Maybe there is nothing you can do personally; but to hide behind "Jews first" is abominable!! That is the reason why six million of our brethren were murdered - because nobody cared enough to say something!!
20. How about caring because it's the right thing to do?
me ,   here   (01.07.07)
I can't believe some of these talkbacks that seem to be saying that because Jews have suffered in the past, Jews shouldn't care about others' suffering now. Ever hear of two wrongs not making a right? Just because you are concerned about Jewish problems doesn't mean you can't and shouldn't be concerned about problems elsewhere.
21. #2 and others
gabriela ben ari ,   jeusalem   (01.08.07)
because we went through the holocoust and because we are so full of wars in Israel, that is why we should be MORE sensitive to the suffering of others At least a few prayers for the well being of these women SHOULDN'T HURT !!!! Good article
22. men can only treat symptom God treats cause
marilyn   (01.08.07)
Many people sacrificed their lives to reach people like this in missionary work. Because unless you deal with the underlying causes of a disease you can but treat the symptom and not the cause. In the last few years the message of love and reconcilliation that the 'gospel' message is; has been ridiculed and seen as trying to force on one culture another culture, but really it is the only cure as men learn that they do not know how to love and that all of us fall short of his glory. For after all he created man in his image. I am not talking about ministers of religion here, too many of them; but ministers who are faithful to the new covenant message.Because the heart has to be changed to affect an action
23. World too focused on "plight" of Pali's who choose terror

25. What is the use of orgamisations ?
bentham ,   singapore   (01.08.07)

26. Im really proud of this guy.

27. Difficult Story to Tell? So, Instead, You Sell Heart-Tug 4 $
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (01.08.07)
The story may make the writer feel better, that he did something. But he copped out, offering no instructive insight into causes, no insight into understanding the motivations of any of the parties or what remedies to prevent continuing tragedies might exist. From bad to worse, talkbackers calling themselves Jews while showing no concern for Africans' plight disgrace us. Nor do they have any grasp of our own plight. They have no Jewish heart and, in my eyes, Oprah is closer to being a Jew than them. Moreover, as our awareness of the interdependence of the shrinking world community grows, our actions - and inactions - increasingly alter our own future. It is a grave implication of the Chaos Theory. For example, a number of African 'hot spots' are conflicted by the Islamic global obsession for world domination that threatens us. If the writer had offered some instructive background, readers would have been informed that the tragedies he describes are the product of the Rwandan genocide between Tutsis and Hutus. That genocide traces back to a civil war sparked by racism, introduced by a 19th century British officer (Speke), that contrasted Tutsi "Sons of Ham" against Hutu sub-Saharan "Blacks." This is one facet of the European racist theories that sparked the Holocaust. Not so far removed from our plight after all. You're being harsh on the writer. You're right that more details should have been provided to give readers a better understanding of the situation, however, it seems that the writer was more concerned to convey the victims' plight rather than a historical background. It could be due to the limited space he was allowed - no more than half a page. Don't say that you weren't a little moved by this story? I saw the 2-art documentary on channel two (ouvda) and heard these women, saw their tears, heard Bernard's tale of his wife's murder , including when he begged the murderers to use bullets instead of machets and saw him break down when recounting how he ran to his wife once the murderers left, and "it was too late". Heartbreaking.
29. Africans' Situation Requires Harsh Action Not Mush (tma, #28
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (01.08.07)
My comments were about the article, not a documentary. If you were truly concerned about the threat facing these Africans you would be angry at shortcomings that are going to bite them tomorrow rather than defending those who fail them by not doing the best job possible to stop the atrocities or alleviate their suffering. Let's not be "harsh" on the UN either, or other organizations. After all, they all have their excuses too. Not! I'm moved by more stories than I can count. However, I observed long ago that people who generate a few tears or sigh a "tsk, tsk" do nothing to improve the world. Save your "moved" mush and DO something. Figure out who can do something, what can be done, SOMETHING. Africans need action, not mush. Tears help you perhaps, not them. 30. WRITE LETTERS TO KOFI ANNAN!
appalled ,   Israel   (01.08.07)
He is the one who turned a blind eye to the interahamwe in Rwanda and let the situation deteriorate in this way. He is the one who later funded refugee camps in Zaire (now Congo) for these very interahamwe.
