1. Good news
Jamal Aboud ,   Ramallah   (01.10.07)
This is great news. I hope few years from now the PM will be Arab. I think Dr. Azmi Bishara is the future PM of Israel. Arabs in Israel should produce more and more children so they can become the majority in the country. Then they can change the shape of the country as they desire.
2. Welcomed step..
Rami ,   Nazareth, Israel   (01.10.07)
I hope he has real power to make a difference...
3. To No.1 "Good News"
Gabriel ,   Montreal,   (01.10.07)
I am afraid that u Really take your desire for reality. The good news is that Israel shows u how democratic it is and the bad news is that u show and opened up your true desire...to wipe out the jewish state... I can assure you that you will never witness that will u r alive.... An advise... dream of something more constructive such as getting a good and great education for you and yours instead of relying of foreign aid... go get a job, build roads and hospitals, school and universities, infrastructure, a strong economy, INstead of having fantaisies..... Good luck No 1
4. Minister Raleb Majadele isn't 1st Arab Israeli Minister!
Abdullah ,   Kuwait City, Kuwait   (01.10.07)
Minister Benyameen Ben Eli'azer was an Arab Jewish Israeli Minister! His origin was from Iraq! Being an Arab Jew do not make you non-Arab! But regardless, that was a great positive move in the right path towards peace between Jews and non Jews in the Middle East! I hope one day we'll see a Jewish minister in an Arab country to show same kind of good gesture towards the other side! Peace.
5. WARNING ABOUT NO 1
Jonas ,   SAD   (01.10.07)
Everybody here see that it is just some moronic and rasistic provocateur? On topic: good news, that shows Israel is democratic. Try that in Iran or Syria.
6. Other non-Jewish Israeli Ministers
surbitonite ,   Kingston UK   (01.10.07)
Salah Tarif, ( a Druze)former captain in the paratrooper and the tank divisions of the Israeli Army, served as the Deputy Speaker and the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, and was appointed Minister Without Portfolio in the Sharon government of 2001. In August 1999, Nawaf Massalha was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
7. Mazel Tov!
Richard ,   New Jersey, USA   (01.10.07)
This is great news. Hopefully moderate Arab leaders like those in Labour and the Druze MKs in other parties can begin to siphon votes from the do-nothing Arab parties in Israel. These MKs can actually accomplish things for their people, rather than bitch and moan and hold press conferences to bitch and moan some more.
8. Hope to see same moves in arab/muslim states
Abdullah ,   Morroco   (01.10.07)
It sounds promising. Lets wait and see how it works out. Hope to see more of this but also to see Jewish ministers in arab/muslim states, (inshallah)
9. #4: You're outdated, Iraq had Hezkael Sasson as a minister
Mohammed ,   Gaza, Palestine   (01.10.07)
The First Iraqi National gouverment of Abdul Wahhab al-Gillani has Hezkael Sasson as a minister in 1921, when jews made 2% of Iraq's population, whille now with Arabs making 25% of Israel's population, so basically your so called Israeli democracy is 100 years lagging behind the tolerant Arab culture.
10. No 9: Mohammed and much more then that.
S Judah ,   London   (01.11.07)
I do not know about the 2% but at one time Jews made up one third of Baghdads population and indeed many held high office there. Nothing unusual about that , we have always made a greater contribution to each and every society we have lived in, well about our numbers in all sorts of areas. I very much look forward to a similar contribution from your world, because that will mean you have given up hate and fanaticism.
11. Peretz is the champion of crude and ineffective spin
Uzi ,   Haifa   (01.11.07)
And it's a very difficult achievement with competitors like Olmert who, by the way, must have approved this exercise and manage the consequences.
12. Make him take an OATH OF ALLEGIENCE to israel first!
(01.10.07)
13. He looks like my Gym Teacher!!
Jellybean ,   Chicago   (01.11.07)
weird!
14. #4 abdullah
avi ,   tel aviv, Israel   (01.10.07)
Middle eastern Jews are not Arabs, ethnically they are jews. Its funny how now arabs like to call middle eastern jews arabs, but when they lived amongst you they were jews, haha. Judaism is not like Islam, it is a Religion but it is also a people. Very few convert, so it is basically the same people that got driven out of Ancient Israel.
15. Abdullah, you are wrong wrong wrong
Jake   (01.11.07)
Enough of this Arab imperialism and nationalism. Jews who lived in Arab countries had there own identity outside the Arab identity, and never identified themselves as Arabs or 'Arab Jews'. Forget about this fantasy, my friend. The Jews are back in their homeland, and they ain't coming back.
16. Banana Republic
(01.11.07)
17. Mohammed, What power did Heskel Sasson have in Iraq?
Jake   (01.11.07)
Don't make me laugh with your bogus claims of tolerance and democracy in the Arab world. Nobody believes them any more, not even Arabs.
18. To # 3
Jamal Aboud ,   Ramallah   (01.11.07)
No one talks about erasing Israel from the map. We want to see two states in the Holy Land. We also want to see Arabs leading their country as they have been treated as non-citizens for years in their own native land. If you think it is democracy, so why you afarid that the PM will be Arab? I don't mind if the future president of Palestine is a Jew or Muslim. If he or she serves the country I will vote for him or her.
19. Power of a Defense Minister?
Samir ,   La Quinta, CA, USA   (01.11.07)
20. Power of a Defense Minister?
Samir ,   La Quinta, CA, USA   (01.11.07)
sorry for the first the error in sending the prior one without my question. My question to anyone who is well informed with the Israeli constitution is, how can a Defense Minister appoint another minister?? Aren't ministers supposed to be appointed/recommended by the prime minister and then approved by the Kenesset?
21. to # 12
Rami ,   Nazareth, israel   (01.11.07)
He has alredy done that a long time ago. He has been active with the labor party for over 20 years..
22. What's next - Tibi as Defense Minister? Vote Olmert OUT!
Roni   (01.11.07)
23. cool
toni ,   sabme   (01.11.07)
i didnt see he was muslim thats a good start. its all amade up war arabs and jews . its the unseen influince of islam and mans arrogance that causes the hatred. show me arab israeli wars before islam.jews and arabs have always lived amonst eachother.
24. #13 Jellybean
Joe ,   Brooklyn, NY   (01.11.07)
And I think Pines-Paz kind of looks like Ray Romano. Don't you?
25. #20
Joe ,   Brooklyn, NY   (01.11.07)
I believe that certain portfolios are given to certain parties, and the party chairmen appoint the ministers for those parties. And there's no Israeli Constitution, but the Basic Law serves that purpose for now. Everybody seems to want a constitution to be written sometime in the near future.
26. israel gets more stupid by the minute
TOM H   (01.11.07)
27. It's interesting how this guy always thinks of ulterior
Micha   (01.11.07)
motive. This is typical of the arab mentality and needs to change. Perhaps this is a move to show unity and some ulterior plan. THE PROTOCOLS OF ZION IS FAKE. GET IT THROUGH YOUR MINDS.
28. Unfortunately, #1 is all too typical
Micha   (01.11.07)
The whole point is unity. Israel is still a nation for Jews to feel safe. The whole point is not for arabs to control yet another country in the middle east. You go deal with your problems and leave Jews out of it. Your people lost the war and you can't get over it. Please work on your paranoia and issues. It's really not fair to keep bringing up what is done. Go read what your leaders told your parents and grandparents to do during the war. They told them to leave so that the Jews could be wiped out. War sucks. We all know that. But the Jews got the lion's share in all of them. There is a collective delusion amongst Arabs that is really difficult to shake. Stop believing all the lies you are fed in the form of propaganda. I go by what I see, not by what I read.
29. How can he be appointed a minister?
Freejay ,   Israel   (01.11.07)
Seeing as his educational achievement is only in passing high school, i find it incomprehensible that he was given this appointment by Peretz.
30. Response to posts 14 & 15!
Abdullah ,   Kuwait City, Kuwait   (01.11.07)
I beg to differ, dear cousins! Judaism is a religion not a nationality, so please stop believing your own misinterpretations of the meaning of terminologies!
